HEADLINE: BROOKS TO LEAD WINDIES “A IN HOME SERIES AGAINST SRI LANKA A

CaribbeanCricket.com 2017-09-19 17:34:03

Only two members of the squad – vice-captain Vishal Singh and left-arm fast bowler Sheldon Cottrell – have featured for the senior men’s team in full international Tests, and Sunil Ambris is a current member of the senior One-day International squad playing against England.

A number of the other players – including captain Shamarh Brooks – have featured in previous series either for Windies “A” or in tour matches against visiting international teams in the last two seasons.

SQUAD
Shamarh Brooks (Captain), Vishal Singh (Vice-Captain),Sunil Ambris
John Campbell,Yannic Cariah,Rahkeem Cornwall
Sheldon Cottrell,Jahmar Hamilton,Montcin Hodge
Damion Jacobs,Keon Joseph,Reynard Leveridge
Oshane Thomas

Commenting on the squad, Chairman of the CWI Selection Panel, Courtney Browne said: “Our A-Team is the feeding ground for our senior men’s team and so we are looking to continue the development of our second-tier players. With a strong focus on consistency in selection, this series is another opportunity for them to continue to press their claims for a place in the senior side, thus placing selection pressure on incumbents, ensuring there is healthy competition for spots and growing our talent pool.”

Leveridge Thomas Cotterel...that is some real pace but Keon Joseph starts with Cotterel

Jacobs, Cornwall, the spin options

Hamilton the wkpr

Brooks,Singh,Ambris,Campbell,Cariah and Hodge the specialist bats.

so its five of the specialist bats, the wkpr, the two spinners and three fast bowlers the likely team.

It's hard to criticize this selection because almost every selectee deserves his place based on past performance. Perhaps Leveridge and Thomas are wildcards but obviously the selectors saw something in them.

Strange logic here in the team selection. Vishal Singh but no Kyle Hope. Are they implying that they are still interested in Vishal? No Hetty either? Or they are thinking once Dwayne Bravo is back the test team batting will be trimmed accordingly? Hard to see the plan here in the batsmen selected. I am happy that we are spending more on pace development over spin. I cannot see WI producing a test winning spin bowler . There will be the odd match but our spinners are not in the same league. We are fire power, our natural game is free scoring batsmen and 90 mph firemen

The coach is asking for fire power. Sangakara in the CPL was saying the same thing for Jamaica. We do not have to win against Sri Lanka, but use the opportunity to blood new intelligent fast bowlers. Why Cottrel? We know his product already. Either you want him at test level or not. If Cottrel then why no Beaton? He looked pretty sharp also and fiery..

Thats good for T20, but a solid base on batting is what needed.
I watched Shai today, if he continue to work on his game, the skies will be the limit.
He was good behind the stump and his batting at the International level, has improved.

in total agreement. Shai has taken his opportunity and ran with it. You can only wonder what it would be like if a few more young batters step up. In reply to Gun_Play

It's an A-team. I don't care much.

However, If it was upto me, this would be my A-TEAM ( FOUR changes with reasons)

----------------------

John Campbell
Hetmyer (was given 2 tests, sat out the Pom tour, he is the clear next in line)
Kyle Hope (was given 3 Tests in England, got exposed, he needs to be moved to A-TEAM)
Vishaul Singh (captain)
Sunil Ambris
Raymon Reifer (was a tourist on the Pom Tour, he needs to be moved to A-TEAM)
Hamilton (wk)
Cornwall
Cummins (again was on Pom tour, got exposed, he needs to be moved to A-TEAM)
Jacobs
Cottrell

------------------

This XI in my opinion, represents our true A-TEAM, with players either moving up from domestic towards the A Team, or moving down from Senior Team to A-Team.

This methodology of selection is also transparent and not arbitrary.

OFCOURSE DUMB FCUK BOOT LICKERS WONT UNDERSTAND WHAT "TRANSPARENCY" AND "ARBITRARY" means..

Hence those are my 4 selections

"What's the problem with Leon Johnson, Beaton, Kyle Hope and others, that was part of the last A team squad?"

1) Leon Johnson didn't play in last year's 'A' team tour of Sri Lanka.

2) Ronsford Beaton will be playing for Dhaka in the BPL in November , towards the end of when these "Tests" take place. Same for Lil Bravo and Evin Lewis. Big Bravo will be playing T20s in South Africa at this time.

3) Are the selectors saying Kyle Hope will be in the Test squad for the tour of Zimbabwe? Same for Shimron Hetmyer? And Raymon Reifer?

4) Stating the obvious - Kemar Roach promoted back to the Test side.

5) Moti Kanhai and Delorn Johnson dropped. Harsh?

Last year's 'A' team stats

A) Vishal Singh demoted back the 'A' team.

B) Montcin Hodge, Jahmar Hamilton, Sunil Ambris, Yannick Cariah and Sheldon Cottrell rewarded for a good 2016-17 PCL.

C) Are the selectors hoping to make a Michael Holding out of Oshane Thomas and Reynard Leveridge?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think we had an 'A' team touring another country since October of last year....

Dowrich is one player, who shouldn't be burdened with WK anymore.

A specialist WK should play at all times in Test Cricket.

Dowrich needs to make the team as a batsmen, and the guy is clearly out of form.

So either he should be part of the A-team setup, or even better for him, work on his game in regionals first.

Andy99 2017-09-20 14:26:29

If Kope, Hety and Reifer in the Test team then that explains their otherwise surprising exclusion.

Beaton did not play a match in the 4day season, his 4day stats are horrible compared to our FC bowlers.

I see a man puttting Cariah to open and he have him not even as a sure pick, well Cariah being the leading run scorer in the FC season should be one of the first names in there and he should be slotted in the middle order where he scored his runs.

Campbell
Hodge
Brooks
Cariah
Singh
Ambris
Hamilton
Cornwall
Joseph
Cotterell
Thomas

Jacobs unfortunate to be left out, while Campbell is the most drop-able batsman.

Andy99 2017-09-20 14:48:15

They already have Thomas there, if they wanted another could've well gone with Smith, both are 20 or thereabouts unlike Leveridge who is 27.

They already picked Leveridge and he came back and did squat, so unless they have been working with him from the end of the PCL to now, it is pure bull to select him now.

imusic 2017-09-20 14:53:11

I get that selectors are trying to encourage and reward performance in the regional 4 day (PCL) competition

But there are certain "talents" ...particularly batsmen that need to be in the mix IMO. You can't just give up on players after a relatively short run. In some cases...no run at all. West Indies cricket needs batsmen.

They persisted with Shai Hope and that eventually bore fruit in England. Why not others?

Johnson Charles
Brandon King
Leon Johnson
Jonathan Carter

If you as a selector TRULY believe these guys have the goods to eventually succeed at international level....you have to give them every opportunity to succeed.

Johnson Charles cannot just be discarded and considered to be a waste of time after he showed that he can more than compete with some of the best in international cricket. It's bordering obscene.

You can't just go on numbers in the regional competition. Otherwise, anyone can be a selector. We've seen Johnson Charles, Leon Johnson and Jonathan Carter in action in the international arena. There is something there. Brandon King is a really good young talent. Why not encourage him?

Anyway....

Andy99 2017-09-20 15:12:52

In reply to imusic

King cant get in because there is simply no space and he has not stood out. Carter was/is 'a really good talent' and how did he turn out?
You cant discard Singh so fast, Brooks has earned this and so too has the others, only so much you can select.

Lohnson has been given many chances while Charles and Carter might be in the One Day A teams. If Carter isn't then thats his doing as he has never taken any chance he has gotten unlike Charles.

There's guys like McCarthy and Walton who should be in the 1day A team.
I'd actually throw in Paint and Chase if they are available.

tc1 2017-09-20 15:27:13

In reply to Andy99

I agreed/disagreed with you on Carter, he may have talent, but fail time again, he may not make Bim 4d team, I think that Charles could be given one more run in OD.

I have not seen King, but if he that talented give it a chance.

I agree with everything you said about Leveridge, these MB think that everyone who bowled 2 overs at 145 will make it at international level, especially at 27.

Disagree. He has above average talent IMO. Now whether that talent translates to the international arena remains to be seen.....but I don't think talent like that should be left to "develop" in regional cricket.

1 - we don't play enough cricket in the region

2 - no substitute for experience and exposure against international teams...especially players deemed to be above average

Agreeing with you on King, very talented cricketer but he will have to kick the door down next tournament, he has the goods but needs to convince selectors and fans. Only by putting up some big scores similar to his 191 against T&T.

Lol. Some of you guys criticizing selections just for the sake of it. People that understand cricket and follow cricketers careers from youth made decision that Shai Hope worth the long term investment. People that understand cricket know that its a miracle that Johnson Charles got this far. People that follow players career understand that Carter dont have the mental fortitude for the long form of the game...despite his talent. People that follow players careers got about 2 first class matches to judge King on. Thats good enough for a fast bowler (a la Mike Holding) but even a tailender can make a one off century.

"Very good post, l agree 100%."

That says all that needs to be said about you and your mental processing.

Good team. Players like Carter and Charles should stay far away from A Team tours until they can consistently dominate regional tournaments. Saw Cariah as a youth and expected him to be here a little sooner. Very good allrounder in the making. Have to also send a good bowling coach to teach these fast bowlers the basics of fast bowling.

In reply to seaegg99... shouldn't this be done before reaching the FC level?

natty_forever 2017-09-21 08:40:27

The "A" team should be made up of performers from our FC tournament. A reward for their hard work and dedication. SIMPLE!

Gayle want a send-off test, you giving he?

IMO, No.

Shiv always deserved it. He dedicated his entire life to Test Cricket.
Infact he was the backbone of the team from 2007-2014.
Yet, he wasn't given the opportunity for a send off test...

Gayle has been away from Test cricket for really long. I don't think he deserves it.

It is the same people, that have us at the bottom of the International standings.
Who are these experts?

We know that but it seems like there is not much coaching regionally because the same mistakes occur yearly. At least on a tour the coach will get to work with them closely for a period of time.

No-one said to discard Johnson, but Brooke won the last series, Johnson has to work his way back into the team, there chemistry within the team which foster well for the future.

In reply to seaegg99... hence my call for academies to bridge the gap between U19 and FC cricket. I would rather my coach of law, work on strategies, as well as to correct flaws that may creep in over time.

Agree. Lot of young talent that will go to waste if not harnessed. This is a reoccurring problem with player development. Should really be a player development department staffed with coaches to work with players year round.

Some people have others looking out for them, that might be the case of Singh, he was a ' walking wicket ' in the series verses Pakistan, when they toured the Caribbean last June, however he is now selected as vice-captain of the A team. Singh is close to being thirty years old, how much of an investment is he?

late bloomer?

He's been making runs regularly in regional 4 day cricket the past few seasons. Yet got exposed when he played for the WI senior team.

Which is a bad indicator for those that insist that players MUST regularly play 4 day cricket to be eligible for the WI test team. Or players MUST regularly play 50 over cricket to be eligible for the WI ODI team.

If you can play against the best in the world....and have success.....that experience alone is way more valuable than playing domestic cricket IMO

Did you not see Gayle perform through the CPL? Isnt the 40 runs in the only T20 a good score for a T20 match? Comeon.

Did you watch the T20 match against England? 40 off 30 deliveries, 77 run partnership for the first wicket in just 6 overs?

That skunt is PURE Garbage Posts.

He shoots off his mouth without any understanding of the game

A score of 40 in T20 is as good a 100 in a 50 over game, simple multiplier of 2.5

Anyways, him a BOOT LICKER.

One question of note about the selected team, since Reifer was good enough to be selected for the England tour, how come he is not good enough to be selected for the A team? I think the Selectors are exposing themselves, are they admitting that they made a mistake on selecting him or do they have no strategy on the development of players and WI cricket.
