SHIV CHANDERPAUL IS A TRIUMPH OF CARIBBEAN UNITY

If you were to consider the top five West Indian batters of all time, without a doubt you would include George Headley and Brian Lara.

Uniting both players is not merely their exceptional talents with the bat, but that they excelled in weak sides. Headley, for example, was known as “atlas” because he carried the team’s batting on his shoulders.

I wonder where Shivnarine Chanderpaul would come on the list. The latest ICC Player of the Year may not have the strokes of Lara or the dominance of Headley, but he has carved himself into the most immovable portrayer of his craft.

COMMENT:

No website on the internet is more up to date on the latest on Shiv than this site

WCF(the green board) has faltered badly in acknowledging the achievements and accomplishments of the Shivster!!!

Let me tip my cap to my cyber friends Balloil and Sensie.

Shiv certainly is a triumph of Unity Village. lol

He may not be in the top 5 great WI batsmen of all time tho. He is becoming a West indian hero for sure.

ATTN: CC POSTERS

Please refrain from comparing the 2008 ICC Cricketer of the Year, winner of the prestigious Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy, and #1 ranked test batsman in the world today, to past West Indies players.

It is an excercise in futility comparing the next great WI batsman with past WI heroes.

When will the Shivster be officially great ?

AVERAGE: 49.09---->50+

ICC RATING: 890--->900+

Boomie, there appears to be a misunderstanding among you peeps regarding the concept of a batting average of 50 and greatness.

Let me make it clear for you and your fellow SBLs.

For a batsman to be considered great, he must have a minimum career batting average of 50.

However, not all batsmen who average 50 or above can be considered great batsmen !!

A great batsman must have style, a sense of flair, the ability to dominate any bowling attack, entertain the cricketing public in addition to the minimum level of batting stats.

Hope I have made it clearer for you peeps !!

Oh and BTW, Crabbie will never be considered a great batsman even if he gets his Not Out-assisted average to 50 !! lol

I have a simple question for you Milesy.

How many batsmen in test history ended their careers averaging 50+ and having a best ever ICC rating of 900+ ?

Go do your research!

It's a very exclusive list Milesy--and any batsman who satisfies those two criteria is a batting great.

define dominate ??

... as in physically dominate..or psychologically dominate or both...

because..shiv has done both already..and is capable of doing both still... as we saw on both the austrailian and sri lankan tours recently smile

Once again, the question:

Look exodus, Crabbie does not dominate.

Crabbie survives... he nudges, deflects and occasionally drives in the crabbiest of styles. If you cannot acknowledge that, then there is very little reason for us to get into a discussion !!

Kapish ??

NineMiles 2008-09-16 14:34:57

Now now Boomie... don't feel hurt that I don't waste my time on Crabbie.

I rely on you to provide the Crabbie stats !!

Don't be offended Boomie !! wink

"We need to do a little bit more homework on Chanderpaul and work out how to dismiss him." Ricky Ponting, Australia's captain

is that not psychological domination...

england 2007 is that not psychological domination

10 off two shows he's still capable of physical domination...and those
nudges, deflects and occasional drives in the crabbiest of styles
has him as the best in the world right now.. razz

or..we could move from domination ...to darwin and survival of the fittest....seeing that you say he survives...

Dont worry!

Your curiosity will compel you to research that rare and exclusive group of batsmen who have ended their careers averaging 50+ and having a best ever ICC rating of 900+.

By the way, there are 6 West Indies batsmen on that exclusive list.

The idea is not to convince the Shiv haters but to expose them

Given the feverish pace at which goal posts are being changed in a desperate attempt to deny Shiv his deserved place

I think the objective has been well achieved lol lol lol

Well said!big grin

Anyway, check this:

13 BATSMEN IN TEST HISTORY HAVE RETIRED WITH AN AVERAGE OF 50+ AND A HIGH ICC RATING OF 900+

Here are some of those 13:

1.Bradman

2. Hutton

3. Richards

4. Sobers

5. Pollock

6. Gavaskar

7. Headley

8. Lara

QUESTION:

Would you say the 50+ average, 900+ ICC rating is an exclusive club ?

Sorry Boomer. Cannot take credit here. It's all balloil! Great stuff!

CricketLuva4 2008-09-17 16:57:46

I never realized that Shiv had never been stumped in test cricket, that means he is balanced, and when he comes down the track he doesn't miss. I am sure there hasn't been many missed stumpings off him.

CricketLuva4 2008-09-17 17:01:47

Shiv's stance helps him keep balance. When you bat orthodox, if you're unbalanced, you drag your foot and gives the stumping chance because your weight is on the front foot if you attempt to play a front foot shot and miss or get beaten, so your back leg raises. When you bat 'crabby' like Shiv, his weight is very evenly distributed, and by the time he gets on the front foot, he is so balanced that he doesn't drag his foot out.

Oil,

Don't forget to add ICC Cricketer of the Year on the Banner next to Wisden Cricketer of the year. We should make that banner a little more jazzy! Too plain man. Keep up the good work. We have to get the great man to a sit down and talk hang.

BTW, song coming up soon.

Brandon is ahead of Shiv at 11. Khemraj is doing well to dedicate time to him and to develop him. I know a kid who plays in my club and he is 13. Today he got 11* and 39 (he got run-out). He has a good technique, a little more aggressive than Brandon, and has a bigger build. But we must keep youngsters involved.

Googs:

I maintain that the green board has been slack in promoting the achievements of the Shivster---Lady Calypso has been trying---and so has Ketchy---kudos to them.

It seems as if that West Indian terrorist Mapoui has taken over the green board.

Look, the Ramjits and Romanees over there are clearly wishy washy---not enough genuine praise for the next WI great.big grin
