Lara linked to breakaway Twenty20 league

Retired West Indies batting legend Brian Lara is being linked to a breakaway Twenty20 competition taking place in India in October 2007.

According to a published report, Lara will be joined by Pakistan's Inzamam-ul-Haq and Australia's Glenn McGrath in the month-long tournament which is being run by Zee TV, an Indian television outfit.

The tournament will include teams from six Indian cities competing against each other. Each team will feature two overseas stars as well as four current or recent Indian internationals, the report said.

The India Cricket League will offer prize money of $1m for the winner. It is slated to develop in forthcoming years, with more teams and different formats, including a 50-over version. The inaugural tournament, featuring a series of big name stars at the end of their careers in the first class game, will start shortly after the first-ever ICC Twenty20 World Championship, taking place in South Africa in September.

The report said Lara and the other players "have already signed."
