Durham signs Chanderpaul

Shiv Chanderpaul West Indies middle order batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul has signed with Durham to play the second half of the English county season.

CaribbeanCricket.com has confirmed that the left-hander has already signed a contract to remain in England through the rest of the summer.

At Durham, Chanderpaul will join fellow West Indians Gareth Breese and Ottis Gibson.

According to published reports out of the U.K., Chanderpaul could return as Durham's overseas pro next season if Michael Di Venuto applies to become a European citizen.

The Aussie batsman has an Italian passport through his father, and if he becomes a European citizen he could play for Durham under the Kolpak rule. That, in turn, would leave Durham free to sign another overseas star.

Chanderpaul joins a growing list of West Indians lining up contracts on the English county circuit. Jerome Taylor will be with Leicestershire under a Digicel-sponsored scholarship and Daren Powell has signed with Hampshire.

Ravi Rampaul's name has been recently been linked with Glamorgan.
