Gayle named captain, Lloyd is manager
Mike Findlay has lost his job as manager of the West Indies team.
At a meeting of its board of directors, the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) today chose Clive Lloyd to replace Findlay for the upcoming tours to Zimbabwe and South Africa. The board also named opener Chris Gayle as the captain in place of the injured Ramnaresh Sarwan.
There is chance that Sarwan could return for the South African leg of the tour but, according to a one-line announcement from the WICB, Gayle's captaincy is for the entire tour.
No vice-captain was identified.
Lloyd, a WICB director and chairman of the cricket committee, served as temporary team coordinator but was demoted after conflict-of-interest questions surfaced about his role and responsibilities.
The team manager ultimately reports to the WICB and its cricket committee, meaning those conflict-of-interest questions remain legitimate.
Findlay, who was the most recent team manager, was caught up in the controversy over Chris Gayle's comments that criticised the WICB for its handling of administrative matters. Gayle was publicly censured by the WICB but, as it turned out, his comments were approved by Findlay.
