Joey Carew, former West Indies Test opening batsman and member of the regional senior selection panel, has lamented the poor quality of cricket in the recently concluded Red Stripe Bowl series in Antigua and Jamaica.

He said the cricket lacked quality and the pool from which he and the rest of the selection panel had to select their team for Zimbabwe had not grown.

Carew returned home on Monday night from Kingston, Jamaica, after helping to select the 16-man West Indies squad for the upcoming tour of Zimbabwe.

"The pool of cricketers from which we had to pick the team for international duties has not grown much. We would certainly like to see the various territorial Boards working a little harder to produce quality cricketers," Carew added.

"In our (selectors) view, the region still has a lot of work do, to develop players to compete internationally. We have the talent, but it has to be carefully nurtured and harnessed. We ought to work a little more with the talented players."

He added that the selection committee was happy with the composition of the squad, and hoped that newcomer Ravi Rampaul goes on from strength to strength and mature as a top class player for the West Indies, as well as young speedsters Jerome Taylor and Fidel Edwards.
