Statistical Highlights of the Lord's Test

Statistically Speaking CaribbeanCricket.com statistician Zito takes a statistical look at the Lord's Test match and finds some highlights:

* In the first innings, Andrew Strauss (137) and Robert Key (221) shared in a record 291 runs third wicket partnership against the West Indies. The previous best for the third wicket against the West Indies was 266 runs between PE Richardson and TW Graveney at Nottingham, 1957. Their stand is also a record at Lord's, bettering the previous best of 221 by DL Amiss and JH Edrich against India in 1974.

Strauss (137) recorded his highest score and his second Test century in his only fourth match. Strauss (137) became the third player to score century in his first two Test matches at Lord's. The other players to do so were WA Brown (Aus) 105 in 1934 & 206* (carried his bat) in 1938 and DB Vengsarkar (Ind) 103 in 1979, 157 in 1982 & 126* in 1986.

* Key (221) recorded his maiden Test century in his ninth match. Key became the ninth England player to score a double century against the West Indies, and his score is the fifth highest for England against the West Indies. Key became the first England player to score a double century in a Test match against the West Indies since DL Amiss scored 203 in 1976 at the Oval. His 221 is also the highest individual score by an England player against West Indies at Lord's, beating the previous best of 196 by L Hutton in 1939.

* Strauss and Key became the 16th and 17th England player respectively to score centuries against the West Indies at Lord's. The last time an England player did so was in 1991 when Robin Smith scored 148*. They became the 90th and 91st player from England to score 100 at Lord's.

* England's 391-2 is the 14th instance of a side batting first scored at least 350 runs on the first day of a Test match after losing the toss. It is the third highest run aggregate for this instance after 411-6 by Australia against New Zealand at Hobart in 2001-02 after being put in to bat by SP Fleming and 397-7 by England against South Africa at Birmingham in 1924 after being put in to bat by HW Taylor.

* The last time three England players scored three centuries in the same innings was in 1990 against India at Old Trafford: GA Gooch (116), MA Atherton (131) and RA Smith (121*).

* Key was involved in a 250+ and a 150+ run partnerships in the first innings. This was the 15th such instance in Test cricket. The last player to do so was RR Sarwan who shared in a 179-run third wicket and 262*-run fifth wicket partnerships with BC Lara and S Chanderpaul respectively against Bangladesh at Sabina Park, Kingston in 2004.

* England's first inning batting collapse was the fifth instance of a side bowled out for under 100 runs after scoring at least 500 runs for the lost of three wickets. The last such occurrence was when Pakistan collapsed from 515-3 to 594 all out against Sri Lanka at Dhaka in 1998-99.

* Michael Vaughan (101*) and Graham Thorpe (38) shared in a 116-run fourth wicket partnership, the third highest against the West Indies at Lord's.

* Vaughan recorded his 12th and 13th century in his 47th Test. He became the eighth England player and the 46th player overall to score a century in each innings of a match and the second England player to do so at Lord's. The last England player to score a century in each innings was AJ Stewart 118 & 143 v West Indies, Barbados in 1993-94. Vaughan is the only third player to do so at Lord's, the others are GA Headley (WI) 106 & 107 v England 1939 and GA Gooch (Eng) 333 & 123 v India 1990. Vaughan became the ninth captain to score a century in each innings of a Test match, the others are:

* Vaughan now has 3651 runs @ 46.80. He has a 50/100 conversion rate of 59.09, the third highest all time after DG Bradman (69.05) and GA Headley (66.67).

* In the first innings, Chris Gayle (66) and Devon Smith (45) shared in a record 118-run first wicket partnership against England at Lord's. The previous best for the first wicket against England at Lord's was 106 by RC Frederick and GS Camacho in 1969.

* In the first innings, Shivnarine Chanderpaul (128*) and Dwayne Bravo (44) shared in a record 125-run fifth wicket partnership against England at Lord's. The previous best for the fifth wicket against England at Lord's was 100 by GStA Sobers and EdeC Weekes in 1957.

* Chanderpaul (128*) recorded his 11th century in his 77th Test, his third century overseas. It was his second century against England and when he remained unbeaten on 128, he has scored exactly 1000 runs against England, his second thousand run aggregate against one country, the other being 1280 against India.

* Chanderpaul became the 15th West Indian to score a century at Lord's, the last player to do so was CL Hooper in 1991. He also became the fifth Guyanese to so after BF Butcher (133) 1963, RB Kanhai (157) 1973, RC Fredericks (138) 1978 & CL Hooper (111) 1991.

* Chanderpaul (128* & 97*) became the 27th player to record a century and a ninety in a Test match. He became the third player to do so at Lord's, other players to do so are LRD Mendis (SL) 111 & 94 in 1984 and MH Richardson (NZ) 93 & 101 in 2004. He was unbeaten in both innings, the only other instance of this kind is AR Border (Aus) 98* & 100* v WI at Port-of-Spain in 1983-84. His unbeaten century and unbeaten fifty was the 14th instance in Test cricket.

* Chanderpaul's feat of being unbeaten in both completed innings while batting at number 6 or higher in the order was the only eighth instance, the last player to do was RR Sarwan (WI) 59* & 17* v England at Leeds, 2000. The only other instance of player being stranded in the nineties after scoring a century in the first innings is GStA Sobers (WI) 152 & 95* v England at Georgetown 1967-68, in each case both men top scored in both innings. Chanderpaul has spent 885 miniutes since the beginning of his innings against Bangladesh at Sabina Park, Kingston on 4 June 2004.

* Ashley Giles (9-210) recorded his 100th Test wicket in 37th match when he dismissed Brian Lara in the West Indies' second innings. Giles' 5-81 is his fourth 5-wicket haul of his career. He now has 103 wickets @ 38.55. He also became the first England spin bowler to take at least nine wickets at Lord's since DL Underwood (13-71) v Pakistan in 1974.

* West Indies now has 35 losses, 52 wins and 44 draws against England in 131 matches. In England, West Indies recorded 22 losses, 29 wins and 20 draws and 7 losses, 4 wins and 6 draws in 17 matches at Lord's.
