Statistically Speaking (CaribbeanCricket.com statistician Zito looks at the highs and lows of the Second Test at Edgbaston, Birmingham)

* England's first innings 566-9 dec was their sixth highest team total against the West Indies and the eighth highest at Edgbaston. It was England's fourth highest team total at Edgbaston after 633-5 dec v India in 1979; 583-4 dec v West Indies in 1957 and 595-5 dec v Australia in 1985.

*In the first innings, Andrew Flintoff (167) and Geraint Jones (74) shared a 170- run sixth wicket partnership, an England record at Edgbaston. The previous best for England's sixth wicket at Edgbaston was 165 runs between DI Gower and G Miller, v India, 1979

Flintoff (167) recorded his fourth Test century in his 38th match and his highest first class score. His previous best FC knock was 160 for Lancashire at Old Trafford in 1999. It was also his second century against the West Indies. He has now scored 1876 runs @31.79. Flintoff became the first England player since AJ Stewart in 1996-97 to record 50s in six consecutive Test matches. Flintoff recorded eight sixes in the match and took his Test career total to 42, the 14th highest overall. His seven sixes in an innings equalled the sixth highest of all time. Flintoff now has the third highest scoring rate (69.66) for a player with over 1000 runs in Test cricket, behind AC Gilchrist (Aus) 82.39 and V Sehwag (Ind) 73.13.

* Marcus Trescothick (107 & 105) recorded his maiden century against the West Indies; and his seventh and eighth tons in his 52nd Test. He has now scored 3936 runs @43.73. He became the ninth England player and the 47th player overall to score century in each innings of a match. He also became the first player to do so at Edgbaston; the closest that anyone came to this feat was South Africa's GC Smith (277 & 85) in 2003. Trescothick followed his fellow countryman Vaughan who accomplished the same feat at Lord's a week ago.

* In the first innings, Stephen Harmison (31*) and Matthew Hoggard (15*) shared in an unbroken 41-run 10th wicket partnership, a ground record for England against the West Indies. It is the 11th highest 10th wicket-stand for England against West Indies.

* Harmison (31*) batting at no. 11 recorded his highest Test score, his previous best was 20* v Australia at Sydney in 2002-03.

* In the first innings, Ramnaresh Sarwan (139) and Brian Lara (95) shared in a record 209 runs third wicket partnership by any country against England at Edgbaston. The previous best for the third wicket partnership by any country against England at Edgbaston was 206 runs between IVA Richards and HA Gomes in 1984.

* Sarwan and Lara have now shared in two 200+ runs second wicket partnerships, the other stand being the 232 runs partnership v England at St John's, 2004. The other West Indian pairs involved in at least two 200+ run partnerships are CG Greenidge & DL Haynes (four times), IVA Richards & AI Kallicharran and CL Hooper & S Chanderpaul (twice).

* Sarwan (139) recorded his maiden century against England and sixth century in 48 matches. He has now scored 3292 runs @ 41.67 and 896 runs @56.00 from 10 matches in the 2004 calendar year.

* Lara (95) recorded this 45th fifty in his 110th Test match. He has now scored 9993 runs @53.43. Lara now has a total of 71 fifties and hundreds in Test career, fourth behind AR Border (Aus) 90, SR Waugh (Aus) 82 and SM Gavaskar (Ind) 79. Lara recorded his sixth 90 in Tests, the fourth equal highest overall.

* Lara became the first player to exceed 1000 runs in the 2004 calendar year. He now has 1077 @67.31 from 10 matches. Previously he scored 1222 runs (1995), 1151 (2001) and 1344 (2003). He became the only third player to score 1000 runs in a calendar year four times, the others to do so are India's SM Gavaskar 1024 runs (1976), 1099 (1978), 1407 (1979) & 1310 (1983) and SR Tendulkar 1000 (1997), 1088 (1999), 1003 (2001) & 1392 (2002).

* In the first innings, Shivnarine Chanderpaul (45) became the tenth West Indian and the 59th player to aggregate over 5000 runs in Test cricket. He has now scored 5068 runs @44.84. The other West Indies players to do so are BC Lara (9993 runs), IVA Richards (8540), GStA Sobers (8032), CG Greenidge (7558), CH Lloyd (7515), DL Haynes (7487), RB Kanhai (6227), RB Richardson (5949) and CL Hooper (5762).

* Chanderpaul batted for 17 hours and 10 minutes to score 371 runs before being dismissed - his sequence started with 101* v Bangladesh at Kingston on 4th June 2004 followed by 128* & 97* v England at Lord's.

* Graham Thorpe (61 & 54) recorded his 36th and 37th fifties in his 92nd match. He now has 11 fifties against the West Indies in 29 matches.

* In England's second innings, Chris Gayle (5-34) recorded his best figures in Test cricket; his previous best was 3-25 against Zimbabwe in his debut Test match at Port-of-Spain, Trinidad, 1999-2000. Gayle became the first West Indian spinner to take five wickets in an innings in England since RA Harper (6-57) at Old Trafford in 1984. Gayle now has 21 wickets @42.23. In the second innings Gayle (82) recorded his 18th half-century in 45 matches. He has now scored 2871 runs @38.28 and 974 runs @57.12 from 10 matches in the 2004 calendar year.

* Ashley Giles (9-122) recorded his best match figures and the second successive nine-wicket haul in a Test match, eclipsing his 9-210 at Lord's last week. Giles became the first England spinner to take nine wickets in successive matches since GAR Lock's 9-29 at Lord's & 11-65 at Leeds v New Zealand in 1958. In West Indies' second innings, Giles (5-57) recorded the best figure of his career and his fifth five-wicket hauls in Test. Giles now has 112 wickets @36.54 in 38 matches.

* West Indies now have 36 losses, 52 wins and 44 draws against England in 132 matches. In England, West Indies recorded 23 losses, 29 wins and 20 draws and 2 losses, 4 wins and 2 draws in 8 matches at Edgbaston.
