Academy Squad Beats B'dos

The latest batch of graduates of the Shell Cricket Academy of St George?s University, Grenada ended their tour of Barbados on a high note on Monday when defeating a strong Barbados XI by three wickets in a 50-over match at Kensington Oval.
Barbados, including West Indies players Courtney Browne and Ian Bradshaw were bowled out for 254 in their allotted 50 overs with Shawn Graham leading the way with 64, J. Parris scored 40 while Carlitos Lopez was 39 not out. Liam Sebastien, Trevon Garraway and Ricky Lane each had two wickets for the Academy.
In their turn at the crease, the Shell Academy team got the 255 needed for the loss of seven wickets with Kenroy Williams making the top score of 62. Austin Richards made 43 while Richard Kelly, 25 and Gareth Matthew 26, were at the crease when the target was reached.
Shell Academy Head Coach Roger Harper said his squad did ?pretty well? and had improved as the tour progressed. Harper said he was pleased at the level of competition and his team had more than held their own.
"There were periods during both the three-day game and today?s one-day game when they could have done better,? Harper said but he added the players had applied themselves well in the matches.
The graduates had emerged from a two-month session on the campus of the St George?s University and played three one-day matches and a three-day game during the two-week tour. A scheduled two-day game against the University of the West Indies was cut down to one following a rained-out day. The three-day game was also against a Barbados XI.
Harper said the tour had definitely benefited his charges, giving them a chance to implement what they had learnt at the Academy in a competitive situation.
