Team Selection

Fast bowler Reon King and middle order batsmen Marlon Samuels and Runako Morton were among 25 players invited by the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) to make themselves available for selection for next year's tri-nation one-day tournament in Australia.

The squad also includes newcomers Deighton Butler, Sherwin Ganga, Xavier Marshall and Dinesh Ramdin. Wicket-keeper Carlton Baugh and batsman Sylvester Joseph were most notable absentees from the list.

Left-hander Narsingh Deonarine and Trinidad & Tobago captain Daren Ganga were also named in the squad, which includes the entire 13-man team that won the recent ICC Champions trophy.

The predictable names among batsmen -- Brian Lara, Shiv Chanderpaul, Ramnaresh Sarwan, Chris Gayle, Wavell Hinds, Ricardo Powell, Devon Smith, Courtney Browne and Dwayne Bravo -- were all included.

Among bowlers, Pedro Collins, Corey Collymore, Merv Dillon, Ian Bradshaw, Darren Sammy and Dwight Washington all won invites.

Except for part-timer Ryan Hinds, there is no specialist spinner among the 25 names released by the WICB.

The WICB, in issuing the invitations, set out the terms and conditions under which invited players will be considered for selection and asked the players to indicate their agreement prior to being part of a planned three-week camp which begins in Barbados on 29 November, 2004.

The board said the reinstatement of the invitation policy is part of the process of transformation of the game in the region to meet the many commercial and other challenges of the new era, modernise the operations and set the game on a sound footing financially and on the field.

Among the terms and conditions that a player must be able to meet are that he:

1. Has made himself available for selection to his national team for all games in the regional domestic competition which immediately precedes, or is concurrent with, the selection of the West Indies Team for the tour or Home Series which immediately follows such domestic competition;

2. Is fit and able to play and is not suffering, and has not suffered from, any illness or injury or other ailment of which he is reasonably aware, which may render him incapable of playing in the tour or Home series for which he is being selected;

3. Is contractually able to execute and perform his obligations under the standard WICB Match/Tour Contract.

The squad will be reduced to 14 before it departs to Australia on December 29th 2004.
