The West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) has formally announced a deal with fast-food concern Kentucky Fried Chicken to sponsor the regional one-day tournament.

The board said the value of the deal is "in excess of US$500,000" and will include the naming of the competition as the KFC CUP. It is a three-year sponsorship deal supported by KFC restaurants in Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica, Barbados, Guyana, St. Lucia, St. Vincent, St. Kitts, Antigua and the Cayman Islands.

"KFC has always believed that it has a responsibility to make a contribution to the development of the countries in which it operates and is convinced that sport is one of the best ways in which any company can contribute to national development," said Dane Darbasie, CEO of KFC in Trinidad & Tobago.

Darbasie said KFC views the sponsorship as "a very critical aspect of the region's preparation for World Cup 2007" since the one-day tournament will serve as a feeding ground to the West Indies Cricket team.

The deal was inked earlier this year but the board did not make a formal announcement until late Thursday evening.
