Tendulkar Leads India to ODI Series Win
Sun, Jun 2, '02
India's batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar shrugged off a shoulder
injury to lead his team to a 56-run victory in the deciding ODI
match at the Queen's Park Oval, Trinidad. The match was decided on
the Duckworth/Lewis method after rain again intervened.
Tendulkar smashed 65 from just 70 balls as India reached 260 from
their 50 overs. Captain Ganguly, who carted off the
man-of-the-series award, chipped in with 56. In their turn, the
West Indies never got going and crumbled for 191 off 36.2
overs.
For the West Indies, in-form Shiv Chanderpaul tried vainly with
a knock of 51 from a mere 40 balls but the top and bottom of the
batting line up never showed up. In the middle, Ronnie Sarwan and
Brian Lara put on a 61-run partnership but, once they were
dismissed, the result was a foregone conclusion.
Earlier, Merv Dillon grabbed 5-52 from 10 overs, including the
prized scalps of Tendulkar and Ganguly.
