Devon Smith Cracks 167*
Wed, Jul 10, '02
Hotshot West Indies 'A' opener Devon Smith finally broke out of
run-scoring slump to record a career-best 167 not out, leading the
tourists to 355 for eight against Lancashire at Liverpool.
Smith, a hard-hitting left-hander in the mold of Roy Fredericks,
had struggled throughout the tour but once he got settled against
Lancashire, he stole the spotlight and the hearts of the Lancashire
fans.
His unbeaten knock included 25 boundaries and came from just 251
balls, testament to his ability to score runs quickly. Smith's
hundred came up in just 142 balls, with 17 fours.
Test opener Chris Gayle smacked 50 from 43 balls with 10 fours and
tailender Suleiman Benn's 31 lent support on a day when everyone
else struggled. Lancashire quickie Ryan Driver led the home team
with 5-70 from 21 overs.
