Walsh Turns Back The Clock
Sat, Oct 5, '02
West Indies bowling legend Courtney Walsh belied his age with a
five-wicket haul as the Rest Of The World overpowered Britain by
seven wickets in the Inaugural DP Power Cricket match at the
Millennium Stadium in Cardiff.
The 39 year old world record holder ripped the heart out of
Britain's second-innings top order with 5 for 51 in front of a
crowd of less than 4,000.
Having been put in, the British batters slogged too often,
particularly during the first of their two 15-over innings. Matthew
Maynard made 21, but Adam Hollioake was the only other Briton to
reach double figures as the home side scrambled to a modest 133-8.
After a short break Saeed Anwar smashed his way to 26 from 10 balls
before Andy Flower hit 45 as Rest Of The World made 179 for six, a
lead of 46.
Enter Walsh, who ploughed through Britain's top order, seeing off
Ronnie Irani, Maynard, Hollioake, Ali Brown and John Crawley.
Britain still did better than their first innings, reaching 156 all
out.
The Rest Of The World were left 112 for victory, and they got there
with 14 balls to spare. Nathan Astle hitting 76.
