Beasmonie and Venkersammy - blast from the past
some more, the comments are hilarious
Norm is this of any use to GC?
In reply to doosra
I know Gopie Beasmonie because he opened the batting for Guyana Under 19 with my school mate Michael Christophe. He was a dasher with Christophe playing the sheet anchor role so that when Christophe had about 15 runs Beasmonie had about 65. Roy Fredericks was the coach.
In reply to doosra
Of course!
I added articles on Gopie Beasmonie, Vinoo Beasmonie, Alvin Bacchus and Corentyne High School, updated the article on Kennedy Venkersammy, added scorecards for Berbice v MCC 1960, and the 1971 Jones Cup final.
These were all related to the articles referred to. I wish there were more such discussions.
Recently a few individuals have offered to help with information from the 60's, 70's and 80's for Berbice. I will be making the most of these opportunities.
I wish others would come forward with information for Demerara and Essequibo though.
Thanks.

They were also pretty good Table tennis players as well. Didn't they both represent Guyana in TT ?
In reply to anandgb
Gopie Beasmonie was the national junior TT champ in 1970.
Berbice even had a Caribbean TT champ in Anand Sookram.
In reply to doosra
Heard of them only...
In reply to Norm
good stuff, keep adding them. i wonder if at some stage the archives might be useful.
i rem in the late 80s and 90s Shan Razack wrote a regular piece in the mirror or stabroek...i read that weekly.
In reply to Larr Pullo
same here. man those were the days when men turn up to play ball .
In reply to anandgb
i've always wondered a bit about the berbice connection to table tennis
wasn't kenneth sukram a national champion too at some stage? think he was from Blairmont.
freddo was also a table tennis master?
In reply to Norm
I've met both of these gentlemen and even played TT with Mr. Sookram in the early '80s. I also ran cross country with Munilall and Kataballi!
In reply to StumpCam

ps: deh had 2 kataballis - pooran and drepaul
In reply to doosra
Don't know who that is, but you can add Nasoon Warner to the list. Them Duffs and Sydney Christophe used to come play TT against Sookram and the like at PMTC. Christophe was junior at the time.
In reply to StumpCam
Michael Duff taught me in HS. He was quite good with his TT
Still trying to figure out this TT culture in Berbice tho.
In reply to doosra
Yes, correct.

Looking at your site...I looked up the players you have listed and I notice nothing about the below player?...He actaully toured with the WI U19 around the same time as these two players....He actually spoke a lot about Beasmonie....He also played for GYO and Captained WestDem fuh years....he is also from Corneila Ida....Blacks can give real history about him...one ah de best allrounder during his time!
Player Profile Babu Sankar!
BTW - Another CI player that played during this time for Guyana U 19 is D Charran...
In reply to WestDem
Yo bhai, I played against Babu Sankar for years in NY. Good man!

One of the Etwaroos of Port Mourant was a distinguished cross-country runner back in the 70's, I believe.
Rumor had it that he didn't want to pay bus fare to 'town'. You wouldn't know anything about that, would you?
In reply to WestDem
Thanks, bro.
I will fix those in a day or 2.
In reply to Norm
he did not by chance run to gt/?
didn't he miss a bus or something? or was it another etwaroo
In reply to laconic-1
You been hiding, bro. I hope things are ok.
In reply to Larr Pullo
Thanks.
That happens unintentionally sometimes. I will sort that out in a day or 2 as well.
Must be Travis Persaud's twin.
In reply to Norm
I right here bro. Pullo and Doosra know where to find me in an emergency.

In reply to WestDem
Added article about Babu Sankar here, and D Charran here.
Couldn't find much on either, even though I remember how well Babu Sankar was regarded. Any help would be appreciated.
What was the "D" in "D Charran" for?
In reply to Norm
D is for Debi (Pronounced Deb EE....He passed I think last year...the best person to give you honest scoop on the two of them would be Blacks (Seeram) he grew up and was significantly inflenced by them....I have scoop but it may not be as sufficiet as needed as they are only related to us playing and drinking together...
In reply to laconic-1
Being Fed....I did not even get back de piece of my tooth that stuck in de leather....
In reply to WestDem

I played against Kennedy in NY some years ago, in the American League. He was playing for New Rochelle CC. I've had a few battles with him and Sheldon Gomes, Teddy Foster, Francis Scott (long past his best), Ricky Craig and the like. Was a great time then and still some talent around.
Kennedy scored lots of runs and was very hard to dislodge. I witnessed many a century he scored. Shots all around the ground. In some ways, Gomes seemed to have a broader bat; very difficult to get anything past him that he wanted to play.
