For the bowlers they might include Rampaul and Shillingford or Narine if he is interested in playing for WI

For the ?? at the top it might still be Gayle (at least for the limited overs part) or Samuels.

Blackwood still deserves and overseas tour and should be included. Pollard and Big Bravo will come in for Blackwood and Shiv when they get to ODIs and 20/20 as well as Russell for Gabriel.

Disciple 2014-09-15 16:12:50

Gabriel has 4 wickets in the series, playing at home against the #9 ranked team.

How do you all imagine he's going to fare when we play India in India? Why not Rampaul or Fidel, both of whom have more experience in sub continent pitches?

You have to choose whether its going to be a learning experience, or you are going to put a team for show.

Narine and Benn and three pacers. Gabriel will get pounded into the turf. WI need an allrounder.

Disciple 2014-09-15 16:34:45

In reply to grumpy

Gabriel could have how much pace and try how hard, that doesn't equate to getting wickets. We need to pick bowlers who take wickets, not those who have pace.

Gabriel's 1 wicket in India cost 85 runs, and his 2 in New Zealand came at a cost of 125 apiece. Have we seen anything in his wicket taking ability to suggest he can inprove those returns?

Larr Pullo 2014-09-15 16:37:33

In reply to Disciple

You could still take him to India, just play Holder in his place.

grumpy 2014-09-15 16:40:42

In reply to Disciple

Gabriel has the raw ingredients that ambrose need to work with, pace and the ability to listen it appears and the height for the extra bounce especially on flat indian wickets.

Braithwaite actually served his time and only didn't graduate because of a knee injury.

Holder and Gabriel can go, but Braithwaite is a proper allrounder and the other bowlers in the 11 are better than Holder.

I just picked the 11. Johnson and Blackwood would go but honestly they will both likely be at sea.

In reply to Commie

I quite agree with you on C. Braithwaite. He will fill the allrounder spot competently.
Find room for J. Holder and we will have the makings of a decent lower middle order.
They will both be a handful on the SA wickets and maybe India also.
For some added experience and mental toughness I will include Pollard in the side also.
Would also like to see S. Ambris included on the both tours for the experience.

Batting lineup as it stands is too inexperienced for India and South Africa.

Larr Pullo 2014-09-15 22:23:16

Carlos Brathwaite played any A team cricket yet? What makes y'all think he's ready to be a test all-rounder? Sometimes I think y'all smoke weed on this board...too much weed....

jen 2014-09-15 22:26:11

16 Man Squad

Gayle
Brathwaite
Kirk (good player on less seamer friendly wickets)
Lil B
Shiv
Blackwood
Ramdin
Holder
Taylor
Roach
Benn

Shilly
Narine
Ambris
C. Brathwaite
L. Johnson

Ambris would be a better player in asia than Blackwood, he's much more accomplished against Spin but i'd give blackwood the chance first as he's going well so far. Simply put, I aint have much hope for Gabriel. That pace in asia with no movement is just set up fo blows. You need something extra in Asia, the height of Holder, or people who can move the ball off the pitch like Roach, C. Brathwaite. Ambris also has donned the gloves before, so can act as Ramdin's reserve. Kirk hasn't done well this series, but he does well on flatter pitches, plus he is aggressive against spin, and you just can't let ashwin and them guys bowl at you with no fuss. Rampaul is a good fast bowler, but if he only plays 2 test series back to back plus ODI, he'll be on the physio bench for the next 6 months. Might as well leave him for ODI's and T20's.

There's a reason why guys like Gillespie and McGrath got success in India. They moved the ball off the seam. Very rare has express pace bowlers done well in India. Lee, Johnson etc have all travelled all over the place to players who are not well renowned against pace.

Commie 2014-09-15 22:27:31

In reply to Larr Pullo

Holder has played 3 WI A matches, CB one.

Holder has played 12 times for Bim, CB 11.

Holder also played 6 games for CCC.

Yet you want to tell me a team without any allrounder will turn down a player who has a better bowling and batting average than Holder because Holder has played less than 10 more matches ?

My weed is weaker than yours big grin

jen 2014-09-15 22:35:37

Kieran Powell would be another name, he's one of our better players against spin, and has shown that on his 2 tours to India already. Looked the best of all the batters on tour the last time but gave away all the starts. I know batsmen usually struggle when they just come to the crease, but Powell and Lil Bravo seem to make more mistake when they nearing them 30's and onwards.

Thought the same of Delorn Johnson but dunno what went wrong with him

Which international Asian spinners has Ambris faced in Asia to make you arrive at this definitive conclusion?

moneybrain 2014-09-16 09:06:37

In reply to Commie

Both CB and JH should be encouraged and qualify for the very best training available in WI. These gents are large dudes with raw ability with ball and bat. Sir Curtley should be capable of molding one or both in to the Test team, they will need a lil more pace but with their height, the combination of bounce and learning to bowl a viscous yorker a la Big Bird Garner they could be nasty customers!

Carlos has been playing reasonably well at all levels especially considering the physical set back he experienced at a critical point in his development, which cost the better part of 2 yrs! cool

moneybrain 2014-09-16 09:11:35

All teams selected are lacking BATTING DEPTH!

WI need at least 7 batsmen fighting for 6 spots plus Ramdin as Wkpr/ batsman! cool

My 15

Gayle (cause they fraid to drop him, and he no want to stop play cause he fraid he gets called out on it)
Braffit man belongs there
Powell (just in case Gayle drop off he seems to be in they graces, remember he basically opted out of cricket for a while)
Kuk (they no ready to drop him yet so he will go might play
Leon John ( no reason he shouldn't be there)
Shvi (nothing needs to be said)
Blackwood (why not)
Ramdin (Mr cappo)
Rampaul (He needs to get back there) If fit and can last full games should play, up to him
Roach (de man creeping up to be best in the world)
Big Benn (will cause some havoc)
Holder (up and coming young fast bowler, there to gain more experience
Angel Gabriel (they seem to favour him don't know how well he'll do
Shilly (don't see why they keep picking him and nah play him, but I see them still taking him guess they working on getting him to be a strike partner with benny
Simmons (part time bowler, opener good batsman, part time keeper) Sure he can get a note from Rammo to cause him to bat well if called upon.

I meant in your 11.

Gayle

Narine

If you go in with Samuels...always a risk to be banned from bowling, as your 5th bowler, its a huge risk.

Much less if someone breaks down.

Commie 2014-09-17 10:39:40

Regarding Benn. Unless he does a Panesar he has history to contend with.

Indian batsmen usually consider left-arm spinners as an opportunity to score heavily through cut and sweep shots. In all 58 cricketers have bowled left-arm spin in India and 45 of them have accounted for 389 wickets (before the start of the second Test here).

Hedley Verity — who died during World War II — took seven for 49 against India at Madras in the 1933-34 series and the record still stands for a left-arm spinner.

The English left-arm spinners, 14 in all, who have been seen in action in India are Verity, Panesar, Derek Underwood (54 wickets), Tony Lock, Edmonds, Malcolm Hilton, J. Langridge, D. Wilson, Ashley Giles, Phil Tufnell, Norman Gifford, Donald Carr, Samit Patel and Ian Blakewell.

Denis Compton, Maurice Leyland, Geoffrey Cook, David Lloyd, Min Patel and Brian Luckhurst have also bowled left-arm spin against India, but in England.

In all 76 left-arm spinners have taken 602 wickets at 40.47 against India.

Commie 2014-09-17 10:54:57

In reply to Admin

None. I actually said before that Narine and Benn should be in the first 11 and its on this thread.

from a temperament point of view I think he is like Lance Stephenson. An asset when dialled in and a total liability when not.

Admin 2014-09-17 10:57:29

In reply to Commie

Agree on the temperament issue. He never saw an argument/cussout that he didn't want to get involved in. I was telling this to Larr yesterday when he started whining about the batsman accidentally touching him while running between the wickets. Everything is a damn fight. I suppose he has some baggage with surroundings while growing up. But yeah, he is definitely a head case.

Narine can't bowl for too long in Test cricket before people start asking serious questions.

I like your squad.
The ODI's that precede the Tests could have a bearing though.
I would hope that Taylor and Roach are not in the ODI squad thus offering
opportunity for C.Brathwaite , Cotterel and Beaton to see what they can offer
looking to the WC.

Pacy 2014-09-18 11:36:09

Craig Brathwaite and Russel are 2 guys that I am looking forward to in the ODI matches... Particularly their bowling. If they can show that they can be good bowlers we could have a very lengthy batting lineup in the WC

hubert 2014-09-18 11:41:35

In reply to Pacy

Carlos not Paint. Yes,he deserves a good look if they are pointing to the future staring with the WC.
He can bat too.
Others in the background now like Powell and Samuels can make a case again for the Tests/ODIs in SA as the WI season is SUPPOSED to start mid November while the India Tour is still on.

jballer84 2014-09-18 15:21:51

In reply to Larr Pullo

Here's my fifteen. Let me start by explaining that we absolutely need to get a batsman in the top six who can bowl good tight overs and get wickets for India. The tracks are flat and it will be a heavy workload especially for Taylor and roach. Gabriel was Admirable but I will not start him on the Indian tracks as he will not be effective since he rarely gets any movement. He will be good in South Africa--- just saying. The top six all rounder's spot has to go to either Bravo or Holder as we need to play two top quality spinners. Below is my X1 in batting order along w reserves. We are playing five specialist batsmen so Shiv moves up one place to 4.

Kraig B
Johnson
Darren Bravo
Shiv Chanderpaul
Blackwood
Ramdin
Holder
Taylor
Roach
Benn
Narine

Gabriel - in India to learn and as a reward for his efforts against Bangladesh. He will do well against Saffies and should start there instead of extra spinner
Gayle - Not convinced by his form and fitness
Kirk Edwards - Has done well in India and could squeeze Johnson or Blackwood if he goes well in warm-ups
Dwayne Bravo - Competes w Holder

Note: We should take 16 players and include Miguel Cummins. I believe his bowling style will also be good in India and could replace one of the quicks if they break down. I would play him over Gabriel although Gabriel is picked in the squad ahead of him. May seem sill, but Gabriel is a reward pick for India to encourage him--he should not play
