Chanderpaul is reserved, not loud, effective rather than spectacular, consistent rather than brilliant. He is known most for his crabby, face-on stance, in which he faces the bowler “like a tennis player returning a serve”, and lurches into a more conventional position as the ball is flung at him. He has a broad range of shots, but in order to make the most runs, he shelves many of them.
