HEADLINE: Windies have mocked Indian fans, says former Test skippper

CaribbeanCricket.com 2014-10-20 08:26:17

MUMBAI, India (CMC) — Former Test captain Dilip Vengsarkar believes the decision by West Indies players to abandon their one-day tour of India was an insult to Indian fans, and says the team should be made to answer for their actions.

The outstanding former India batsman was one of several in the local fraternity here voicing their disapproval over the stance taken by the West Indies one-day team.

"Their cricket, administration and performance on the field, is at its lowest ebb. It can't get worse really," said the 58-year-old, who played 116 Tests.

"I would say it is extremely poor to put it mildly and very detrimental to the image of the game. This West Indies team has brought disrepute to the game, mocked at the Indians fans. They should be taken to task for this unpardonable behaviour.

I agree.

I am not excusing the WICB or WIPA for their contribution. But the players could have dealt with this differently.

But same old "Caribbean" attitude - "Me na care - nobody tell me what to do - I do what I want"

I too agree. Not the first time our new generation of senior players acted this way - with incompetence and without professionalism. Former senior players did do the same thing in the past but it was very rare and not with such frequency and blatancy. In the past WI was the top team and every other cricketing nation wanted to play us so we had an advantage. Today it's not the same. WI cricket is at an all time low and this will sink us even further. India Cricket Board is treating to band WI players from the IPL and might even sue WICB for millions of dollars. In my opinion Bravo stupidity on the advise of "you know who" have made matters worst. These senior players will now realize they will loose more than what they were hoping to achieve.

They should have completed the tour since whether they went home or finished the tour the result of the MOU negotiations most likely would be the same. Sorry to say - but these crickets just love money over pride for country. There got to be a balance between both. I'm not saying some injustice was not done, but there got to be a better way of dealing with it. Sadly if we let all of them go and build a new team with the younger talents in the Caribbean - The same thing will happen in the next few years. Pride, morale and discipline are all things of the past for this younger generation.

Windies players used the only leverage they had. If they finished the tour, then WICB would have zero incentive to put aside the corrupted Wavell Hinds agreement.

WICB tried to use the threat of IPL bans to co-erce their players into playing the India tour and present the new contract as a fait accompli. This blew up in their face, spectacularly. Players are workers, not slaves or servants of the board, and they have right to collective action including refusing to play. Some people on this board want to forget this simple fact...

Again, as a neutral third party, its obvious to me that the last thing the players wanted was to cancel the tour, thats why they played through till the 4th ODI, but WICB thought they were going to get their way and played 'tough'. Let's see how this playing 'tough' business works out with the ICC and BCCI.

Just another insecure Indian looking to hijack any issue to wring out some sort of relevance and validation

what??? That's just so off-base. Are you so insecure that an outsider sharing his opinion on a forum gets you all worked up. Now that's sad. lol

Get well soon brother.

They had the upcoming South Africa tour and the ODI World Cup. They had more than enough to bargain with.

They should have finished the tour. I am betting that to the players on reflection know thy chose the wrong option.

But whatever to make a point and damn the consequences.

I had three separately Skype calls today with the most hardened WICB (anti-WIPA) people. One is a current WICB director. They all, without reservation, feel the same way you do. For the first time in forever, I'm sensing that reality has struck home for everyone, including those who support the WICB.

This was not their only leverage. They would have gotten paid for the tour of India since that agreement was in place before the new MOU. They should have finished the tour and make a BOLD statement to the WICB to resolve the matter shortly afterward. Remember the WI have a few big tours coming up shortly including SA, END and the World Cup. They could have used those as leverage - WICB stands to loose millions from these events if a deal was not made. Wisdom should have been prevailed over ego!!!

Exactly. They had tours coming up. Hopefully common sense will prevail from this point forward and we won't end up in the situation we all know awe could when a black man decides to lay harden!!

The implication here is that at the end of the day, the big (sure) losers are the WICB (administration).

No West Indies cricket will lose. In fact, it has already lost--and big. The only survivors (not winners) are the handful of cricketers who will be able to maintain their IPL contracts (I doubt Sammy will).

How about that for some leverage?

Personally I feel that the only way to avoid these situations in the future is to

1. Make the WICB a not-for-profit organisation
2. I agree in principle with the WIPA approach of spreading the money amongst a wider pool of caribbean players
3. Players are made to sign long term contracts that mean putting West Indies first

If that means we end up with only those players that can't make the IPL, then so what. We can't do any worst than we are currently doing.

Personally I don't feel mocked. I feel grateful for the free bathos, the pathos and the comedy.

To paraphrase the immortal words of a great man, did y'all hentertain?

Why, yes! Popcorn time! lol

I am telling you that the BCCI approach has sent shockwaves through Factory Road. For the first time in forever, the WICB realise that other people value the players more than them and are prepared to bury them. So Clive Lloyd can say anything he wants to say. The Indian People WANT TO SEE THE WINDIES PLAYERS. It is a reality that has shocked the WICB.

But I still say that the Players could have done things differently. Yes Admin I know your position. But as I have said before, I would have completed the series in India and then came home and boycotted South Africa.

The counter argument to that position would be the WICB saying: “Well they threatened to strike in India , but continued on and completed the tour at reduced wages, maybe they’ll do the same with South Africa. Or if they do strike, I’m sure we can cobble together a 2nd string team like 2005 and 2009. If South Africa say they not accepting a 2nd string team, then WICB bears no legal liability”
So the players felt they had to hurt the WICB financially to show them they meant business. I’m not saying I agree with their decision though, as a US$65M judgement against the WICB will cripple cricket in the region for years.

Yeah...but if windies do not send a team to South Africa...ICC would have issues with WICB.
