Basil Butcher Reminisces

Q: How does Worrell compare with the white West Indian captains who preceded him? After all, he glued the team together in a way that none of the white captains were able to do previously.

A: I don't think the white captains ever regarded that as their objective. I spoke with earlier West Indian players like K.H. Weekes, Manny Martindale and others, and their situation was very different from mine in the West Indian team. They didn't even stay in the same hotels as their captain.

Frank was quite different. He would have carried Gilchrist to Australia in 1960, but he was prevented from doing so. He didn't care about colour, class or ethnic background. He cared about West Indian cricket. I don't think that any of the players who were not of African background felt that Frank was not with them. He was everybody's friend.

Here is a special page dedicated to this great man.

It is incomprehensible that neither Chetram Singh nor those who followed him saw it fit to let Basil Butcher participate in running Guyana cricket.

And it is even more incomprehensible that the WICB continues support such injustice, by standing behind the current GCB.

R U NUTS???

Basil Butcher ran against Chetram Singh for President of the GCB.
Why would you think that Chetty would step aside for Basil Butcher???

Surely you know Chetty better than that!!!!!!!!

As to those after Chetty!!!!!!
Mebbe I misinterpret you and you were being sarcastic because both of us know that Basil Butcher is a man of high integrity, intellect and someone who genuinely cares about cricket.
BTW check your PM.

Surely you know Chetty better than that!

Seems like half the regional boards is now being run by Chetty types. Cricketers are expected to be subservient to these types alway - even after retiring from playing.

Thanks Norman, but with reference to that Trinidad game, I heard the same story as a young boy. The Trini called for Willie and he never delivered.
It is a fact that Basil and Roland are cousins.

The Trini called for Willie and he never delivered.

And Garry took the blame!

It is a fact that Basil and Roland are cousins.

Butcher's father was Bajan. I think Clive Lloyd's mom was Bajan too.

Bajans played a significant role in the development of cricket in Guyana.

Thanks , I enjoyed it . Alexander , and those currently in the governance of Cricket
in the Region are Mimic Men , who love copying those in the Region who governed Cricket in the Region , but were of a different pigmentation .

It is this mentality that pervades those in the governance of Cricket in the Region why there exist an atmosphere of animosity between those in the governance of Cricket
and their Employees , the Players .

It is this same attitude , why Cameron did not go to India , from Dubai ,to sort out
the crisis . This is precisely why I have ofte stated in this Forum that the MIMIC MEN in the WICB bluntly refuse to come into the 21st century .

This is why they can boldly proclaim that Players cannot read . People who have higher education , go to Lawyers for guidance ,when they are buying a house , or seek advice from persons who are more knowledgeable than they are , in specific areas of expertise .

Cricket in the Region in my opinion , will never ever improve unless and until those in the governance of Cricket stop their
attitude of being Masters , ad the Players their Servants .

Butch's son used to post here.

I think his handle here was Denoke.

Mackenzie harassed the chap and he stopped posting.

As I can remember Butch tried very hard for many years to be part of Guyana cricket....but Chetty was king and no one could get him out
