CaribbeanCricket.com 2014-11-25 07:18:54

Bridgetown, Barbados, November 23 - (www.bcacricket.org) - As widely expected, former national captain Ryan Hinds, Kyle Corbin, Roston Chase and Tino Best have taken the places of the four West Indies players named in the Test squad for South Africa for the Barbados Pride Round 3 WICB Professional Cricket League first-class match against Guyana Jaguars at Providence in Guyana, starting November 28.

Captain and opener Kraigg Brathwaite, left-arm spinner Sulieman Benn and fast bowlers Kemar Roach and Jason Holder will all be leaving the Caribbean on November 30 for the three-Test series against the South Africans.

UNLESS someone steps up...this batting will crumble against the spin trio of Bishoo,Permaul and the dangerous Deonarine. Hinds,Carter and Smith will have to distinguish themselves.

Barbados will bring as much as seven bowlers against Guyana. Only Deonarine to me will stand in the way of the B'dos bowling decimating Guyana.
Best,Cummins,Brathwaite,Smith,Warrican,Hinds,Nurse.

1.Best position to get some runs outta Smith is to make him open.

2.Hinds experience needed here in the absence of Brathwaite and Edwards....he only miss the first match becuz of illness.

3 Can't see a beatdown for Bim here. Guyana batting is just Deonarine.

Barbados bringing seven bowlers all with NUFF FC wickets ave sub 30 (except for the newcomer Warrican). Guyana batting will be put to the test.

Barbados onetime had a bowler name Sam Skeete ...all he had was pace,,,used to get a load of wickets everytime they play Guyana. Guyana of today fraid pace esp minus Shiv.

Commie 2014-11-25 13:17:15

In reply to Admin

Ask Reds. He started saying it after this innings...

Carter in semis

I was there at that game. The wicket was horrible and pretty much unplayable for everyone else but Carter, who was batting as if he was in a net session. It was something else. Note that spinners took ALL the wickets in the match.

And note he is a leftie and Shane was bowling at the lefties traditional weakness.

Admin 2014-11-25 13:19:02

In reply to Commie

If that's the data set you are using to herald "the best player of spin in the region," then I'd say it's quite a stretch.

I'm not doubting that he may be but c'mon, gimme something better.

Commie 2014-11-25 13:28:25

In reply to Admin

Look I saw that match live. You watched the scorecard.

Noone else in the entire match scored 25. Carter was last man out for Bim. And Shilly was under no ICC restriction and was pelting the doosra as well as bowling the offie square.

Sometimes you can watch a scorecard and get the picture.

We will have to see but the combination of his footwork, willingness to play the balls without using his pads, and his excellent sweeping and driving vs spin makes him the best regional player Ive seen vs spin in the last few seasons.

Look, Deo is a slow bowler. He aint no bad spinner in my book, but he offers something different from Bishoo and Permaul who spin it from the leg. I suspect that batsmen are preparing for those two and neglecting Deo, giving him a bit of a leg-up. Bim will deal wid him.

You have to check smithy 4 d record, he has failed in this format, OD and t20 yes.

The problem that I see with young batsman from bim, they do not play against teams that have bowlers who hunt in pairs.
It will be interesting to me, if you, tc1 , Fuzzy or kid can name three bowlers from any elite team, that can walk into the pride X1.
Empire - Warrican, dont know any other bowler
Spartan- Benn
Maple-Roach
Pickwick- Best
Wanderers- Holder
UWI - Brathwaite, Ryan Austin
BDFSP - Cummins
Lime - Nurse

Previous years
Empire - Griffith, Branker
Spartan - Hall, Mayers, Holford
Wanderers - Atkinson, Edwards
Pickwick White and a few others
Carlton - had a few
Maple - Holder, Boyce and a few other

Thats why Barbados were able to produce batsman, all the above mention guys played for Barbados and represented teams that had 2-3 bowlers that could easily make bim's team today.
Shai preparing to play a team in bim with 2-3 good bowlers, will be good preparation for him, facing regional bowlers.

You are making the same case a friend of mine told me a couple of years ago, I agreed with you here, but remember Lara came out of a very weak T&T system.

I can only hope that Shai improve and develop as a batsman, I also think that Shane Dowrich has good technique .
The BCA has to organize tournaments to expose their young players like in the past

Bim batting seems to be improving and I hope K. Corbin plays EACH BALL ON It's merit.

Outswinger 2014-11-26 16:54:16

In reply to openning

I do not disagree, but for me the most glaring problem is that the Barbados Youth is so fragmented and the best youth players do not play for that team.

From the stand-point of development, U17 and U19 preparation as well as Barbados XI preparation, these players should be selected by the Barbados youth team coaches. Any youth who is still at secondary school should be available to them, as a channel to select the young, promising talents who may have the goods to get into the Barbados team at a later time or now. It should be an honour. They should be able to name a thirteen and have a few in reserve.

I say, strengthen that team first and foremost. There is a problem with school teams playing in the Elite, like Foundation. Their better players should be in the Youth squad. Schools should be relegated to the lower divisions, maybe Div. 1 at the highest but the coaches should still be able to pick any school kid for the Elite Barbados Youth Team and have priority over any other school or normal team.

Even if kid signs up for a regular club like Empire, he should be available for selection by the Barbados Youth selectors as long as he is of the age or at secondary school.

Number 2: Fix/upgrade the BCL. Create about 6 zones and make the zones contest for the BCL championship. But draw up the zones to be equitable in terms of teams. They need more exposure and promotion.

The problem I see is too many teams in the Elite division.
Barbados does not have the population that will produce the number of Elite players, a great percentage of players, should be in the Intermediate division.
The BCL is not needed, since moving into the BCA, 2nd division can do the same thing the BCL did in the early years.
Having 6-8 team playing Elite cricket, with two of them being UWI and schools, will be better competitive cricket, create better, bowlers and batsman.

Lara and Shiv are two out of 1000 youngsters that came out of the U-19 in the last 25 years.

If you see what happened to Carlton, with having Yorkshire in the 1st division, you will see what I have been posting for sometime.

Outswinger 2014-11-26 17:56:11

In reply to openning

I disagree vehemently wid dat! The BCL is needed. The players from the BCL that play in the BCA should be the cream of the crop from the total BCL landscape. Now how do the BCl get their players there and potentially into the Barbados team like Nurse, Charlie, Sobers, Hunte and company ? They need a feeder system. That is what the BCL is.

You have youth all over the island playing cricket, and many of these probably cannot
get into a BCA team. Killing off that competition could kill off some gem, some young Hall, or Greenidge or Holford in the making. My point is, it should be structured in zones like: City (St. Michael and surrounding), North, South, East, West (north of City like St. James, western St. Peter), central (St Thomas/St. George) That is six zones.

They play their zone championship, then the zone selects a squad of their best to play against the other zones; and from that players are selected to the BCL team that plays in the BCA Elite. Such a team could be very strong with truly the best BCL players from around the country.

Barbados cricket would be much better off with those two initiatives.

tc1 2014-11-26 18:32:06

I disagreed with opening also, I like your plan but take it a step, using this same model and create a real elite division that has professional sponsorship.

The year the BCL move into the BCA, was the end of the BCL as you and I knew it.
If you live in Barbados and follow BCL cricket, you will see a number of teams in various villages now playing in the BCA.
The BCL league is now like a fete or village cricket.
I grew up following teams name George Park, Clippers and Sheffield, the Reifers came from that area, are these teams in the BCL now?

I would like Powen's dad to give me his input on this topic, and what he think is needed to move cricket forward.
We have not produce a good International batsman since Dessie, just think about that.

Logic 2014-11-27 09:34:33

In reply to tc1 Smith is a different player today. That is how he worked his way back into the wi one day squad. In my book if you are good enough to play 50 over cricket internationally then you are good enough for the 4 day game domestically. Bottom line is that Smith is a current wi professional player and he needs to keep playing cricket in whatever form if he is to maintain that status.

All of that said when you suggest he has failed at the 4 day game you need to indicate relative to whom. To this day I think he is only Barbados cricketer in recent history, apart from Hinds, who has soored a century against Trinidad at the Barbados cricketer's graveyard, Guaracara Park. His was a matching saving effort, while HInds' century was the precipice from which he and the Barbados fell into a deep abyss, only rescued by the assertiveness of Kirk Edwards years later.

I agree with #1, I don't think two cricket organization is needed in Barbados anymore.
If you look at the history of the BCL and why it was needed at that time, you would realized it was a way for getting poor boys and men to play cricket.
We enjoyed the BCL playing the BCA at the end of the season, this format is now replace with a team in the BCA and a number of teams leaving the BCL.
I applaud some clubs that youth division, thats what most county and shield clubs have.
My wife's first cousin was drafted in Toronto, by Arsenal, he has been living in England for 5 yrs, clubs and schools develop young players.
