I shivered when I saw your thread title. Your thread is what alerted me to this development. A very sad and unfortunate event.
May God grant Hughes family the strength and comfort which they'll need through this very difficult time.

Sad day for the family and the cricket fraternity.
Young man at 25..way way too early to go...and an unlikely way to go
In reply to Narper
Sad, very sad
May his soul RIP

Yup. Many of the CC.comers who are currently asleep will be quite stunned by this news when they wake up.
Now this is going to generate some debate about the bouncer in cricket. I was just reading a Cricinfo profile of Hughes and apparently in 2009 on a tour to South Africa, he perceived to have a weakness against the short ball which the bowlers tried to exploit but he used it against them.
Some may say to modify the helmets, but the area where Hughes got hit is going to be difficult to protect and still enable the batsman with comfortable movement of his head.

Read what Brian Lara said...before Hughes passing...I started a thread on Lara's comments
Tragic.
Spare a thought for the bowler as well. I cannot begin to imagine how he must be feeling
In reply to Narper
Very sad day. I feel very upset reading this news. He was just 25 yrs old.
In reply to imusic
It will be terrible for him. Hope he hets enough support and people understand his feelings. I don't remember post internet such an on field incident in cricket.
In reply to Narper
Pakistan vs New Zealand Test match Day 2 now suspended......at the moment due to this incident.
Very very sad to see this happen
Sad day indeed,
May he RIP
One can only try to imagine how stunned and hurt those close to him and the unfortunate incident must be feeling right now. And will feel for a long time to come.
Like boxing, the wisdom of putting one's life at risk for "fun" will be discussed again. Does facing a hard cricket ball make cricketers better sportsmen than tennis players?
RIP to the young man.
Did the ball hit the helmet or a direct hit to back lower unprotected area?

RIP
Very sad indeed.
I am not going to bat without a helmet again even if it is just gentle medium
A great tragedy - Our deepest condolences to his family, rest in peace.
This is tragic and devastating news... RIP Phillip Hughes
Deeply saddened to hear this. Died playing the sport we all love....
The most sombre day for me and I am sure will be for my 14 year old son who aspires as he plays the game.
This is a blow to the family as well as the game of cricket.
Folks this is a very bitter pill to sallow.
I am truly sorry to learn of Hughes' passing. In all the many years I have been following cricket this is the first time I can remember an international cricketer passing in this manner. I hope the bowler will receive all the help and counselling required. RIP Mr. Hughes.

Woke up this morning and its still on my mind.
Looking at the game, the scary thing about it is that Abbott is not a genuine quick, I think they list him as medium fast. Last night it got me thinking about playing in my teens/20s without any helmet, one pad, no batting gloves, and we never understood the danger.
R.I.P Phillip ...sad sad

RIP young man...very sad indeed..
My condolences to his family and friends.
So sad! We need a better designed helmet. May his soul RIP. My sympathy to his loved ones.
RIP Phillip Hughes.
The only solace is that you died doing what you love doing.
RIP Phil....
Cricket is a dangerous game, and it still bugs me as to the lack of protection in years gone by.We now have somewhat adequate protection, but when you consider the amount of fast bowlers around the cricketing world, there needs to be more for batsmen.Tailenders also get the treatment, and it's a surprise that one hasn't been fatally injured,we hope it never happens.I feel top designers must get together and come up with something with 100% protection.American footballers protect themselves from head to toe,why not cricketers.
RIP Mr.Hughes.
Very sad.
Also very freakish - ball didn't hit his head but actually his neck at the base of the skull. Caused the artery to split and result in massive haemorrhaging into brain.
In reply to Bain
Correct.
RIP Phil Hughes. Condolences to his famnily and relatives.
A real sad day for cricket. We will all mourn this unfortunate event.
But God will comfort all.
Today being Thanksgiving day in The USA, we give God thanks for your life not only as a person but as cricketer who gave enjoyment to many.
Indeed. One of the saddest days in cricket. Blessings to his family and loved ones.

I didn't realise it would've affected me so terribly.
Word can't describe this
RIP Phil
RIP Hughes,
Really hoped that you would of recovered and bounced back. But wasn't to be.
May God's Blessings comfort your family, friends team mates etc.
Also to the bowler. It's tough doing your job and hurting someone in this way.
May all find some soft of comfort.
Real tough one this
RIP Hughes.
