West Indies opener Chris Gayle has raised the possibility of retiring from Test cricket if his fragile back cannot cope with the increasing workload in a crammed cricket calendar. Despite previous comments on the format, Gayle made clear that he was still passionate about playing Tests but said that he would assess his future immediately after the World Cup, when he sits down with WICB officials.
"I do [feel passionate about playing Test cricket], to be honest with you," Gayle said in an interview with Digicel Cricket, in Perth on Tuesday. "It is just that lately this back problem has kind of pushed me away a bit from Test cricket. To be able to go five days, it has been tough. I haven't sorted my situation yet, which is the back problem. That is another concern ... because I've been playing cricket straight on the road and really didn't get a chance to spend the time and give the back as much time to heal."

I suspect that retirement from tests would enable CG to play full IPL this year. It would also leave him just short of GG for the highest aggregate by a WI opener. What a "dilemma." Guess he can "unretire" after the IPL

Gayle's only loyalty at this time should be to his family and himself.
He has a life to live after cricket. The man has been playing with an injury for years yet all he gets for his trouble is nothing but abuse and character assassination.
I suggest he should do what is in his and his family's best long term interest.

Agreed. As much as I would like to see him play tests, at this stage in his career, he should make some $$$ and live comfortably in retirement.

You say that as if to give the impression his loyalty/priority was never with himself and his family prior to retirement.

And your problem with that...is?
What would be your issue with Gayle:
doing what is in his and his family's best long term interest?.
I take it you work for free and subordinate your family's and your own long term interest to your company's

I have no problem with CG looking our for himself and family pre and post retirement but you gave the impression it was something other than what it is, prior to his consideration of retirement.

There is far too much cricket today and it puts great stress on the players as cricket boards exploit them to make more money with extra tours.
All players need to manage their careers carefully.
Pity the over 70s like sir Clive Lloyd still think test cricket and first class cricket is the pinnacle ( which has little crowd support and is not financially sustainable in the caribbean) and have not embraced t20 the way the public has.
Imagine the wicb under Cameron have sold away t20 ,their only viable product.

The likes of Jacksprat are extremely sensitive to comments deemed unsupportive of the Leadfoot Cowlasher or any other Yardie player!

The idea that Gayle or any other player is working for free is one of those odd interpretations out of this.
In the end you can only blame the WICB for offering retainers to ppl who are focussed elsewhere.
Gayle has a long career in IPL and t20 league cricket ahead of him.
