in WI cricket....
how did grooming a young team turn out for us?

I miss Chanders

I miss him too.
Free Shiv!

What constitutes a period of transition ?
I mean...do you think a young team should have 1 year ? 3 years ? 5 ?
In reply to Commie
The time since Shiv played his last ODI till now should suffice, no? Especially when you consider that many of the same players from the 2011 WC team are representing the Waste Indies in this World Cup, four years later.
In reply to Commie
Transition has to be a gradual process, you need a mix of veterans and youth. The veterans you keep ought to be models of what the organization is striving for. As your veterans' careers wind down, you hope the youngsters who were being seasoned, can take over the mantle. Way I see it, this should have been Chanders' last WC. Fifty overs cricket he could still play.
also, the one cricketer you want your guys to emulate (from a work ethic perspective, if no other)is exactly Chanderpaul
In reply to Curtis
Chanderpaul played recently in our regional Super 50 and was at sea.
He has played over 200 ODIs and he is close to 40. He is done. That WI havent found a clear path to a new team doesnt make him less done.
His time in test Cricket is coming to a close as well, but all in time.
WI Cricket struggling in this WC doesnt make Chandy less 'done'.
In reply to Commie
I can't even remember recent Super 50 but a quick search unearthed this:
Chanders powers Guyana into Finals in Jan 2015
Not to say he didn't have struggles, who didn't?
In reply to Curtis
Grooming a young team was working under Sammy, but through govt. Intervention Gayle had to be reinstated and then it was the get rid os Sammy syndrome and now here we are at the starting gate again.
In reply to emrmike
that was a turning point no doubt, based on quality of players available
in the last WC, 2011, WI lost in the quarter-finals to Pakistan.
here's how that went down - scorecard
in four years - we lost ground
who takes the hit for that?
In reply to Curtis
Im fascinated as to what Chanderpaul will bring to the OD team.
If he couldnt get it done in India in 2011, why would he get it done when he is older, on wickets that are harder and faster ?
I agree that the rebuild was botched, but one of the best moves was extricating Chanderpaul and dedicating him to Tests...much to his own chagrin.
In reply to Curtis
Based on this team though, I would prefer Shiv than Gayle on the team.
In reply to Commie
The team is poor, agreed. However, Why would you not go to battle with your best team? Not saying Chanders would have meant WI advance to the next round but, geez, the current team is worse than imagined. Batting 50 overs ought to be one of the first goals, no?
After the World Cup K. Brathwaite should be given a number of ODI's as opener alongside Charles or Simmons.
Brathwaite could fill the void left by Chanderpaul in ODI's.
In reply to WICFan
I could live with that...the one guy that emulated C-paul...has to show some more aggressiveness but that will come
In reply to Curtis
Shiv wouldn't accomplish that and he himself knows it.
He stated his objective..to reach 10k runs in odis.
And he would. One tortured not out at a time.
This isn't the Shiv who used to open and was a dasher. This is a new Shiv, in statistic accumulation mode..
In reply to Commie
15 fcuking years now they are re-building. You were front and foremost batty licking Hunte and crew plans for this World Cup. How did it go?
In reply to Commie
If Shiv is struggling, what would you say about Gayle, DRS, Etc?
In reply to Runs
What rebuild? With the same players?
Let Shiv go safely into retirement.
In reply to Commie
The problem is you getting rid of Shiv and no one steps up to the plate. Hmmmmm!!!!!! great thinking and planning.
If you guys work in the corporate world I wonder how you woud survive with such excellent planning.
In reply to anandgb
So your theoretical example of why Shiv should remain in the ODI team is that noone stepped up?
Should we have just kept Viv and Lara et al?
I mean...how bizarre do the arguments get?
In reply to Commie
There are quite a lot of players who played until then wanted to retire. My point is you do not push someone out because of age. Their competition should push them out by performing better. Your thinking about age is flawed.
Where is that happening? Who replaced Shiv in the ODI team has performed better in the last 4 years? For that matter NO ONE in the team has.
In reply to Commie
You were chief supporter of their promise to build a winning side for this WC, what happened?
The fact of the matter is this, Shiv was retired (forced out too early)cannot understand why this is so hard to admit. Ok maybe he would not have been selected for this WC but he could have added value to the much weakened batting line up together with support to the younger players. Visionaries you guys were not.
Ruined the team, that is what they did. Cannot man manage.

Knucklehead after knucklehead running West Indies cricket.
