This is a very common mistake here. Please take the correction in the spirit in which it is given.

Sentence 1: Did Big Bird gave the Big CAT the work book?

Sentence 2: Did Big Bird give the Big CAT the work book?

Did is already past tense. First verb in the past tense is enough for a question.

No need to use gave which is also past tense.

Sentence 2 is correct.

Even with the adjustment your statement still doesn't say anything.

This error is so common around here that I find it baffling. I don't know...but this how it is taught at some schools in the region? This is a serious question.

It's very common. That is one reason I decided to offer the explanation. I would also hope that if I made a common error, someone would take the time to assist, without trying to put me down. None of us is immune to error.

In that context I decided it was better to assist rather than say nothing.

I think it's ok to correct posters but not ok to minimize posters. We should also consider that this is not a classroom but a Board designed to be carefree and loose.

And, when posters revert to West Indian dialect like "Ad dead wid laff", should they expect the dialect police to scrutinize and correct them also?

Harbrace pg 68 said that the 'do' form is used only in the present and past, is this your reference or similar .note that I did not disagreed with you as I wrote the sentence in both forms.

English is not a simple language and very often has confusing verbs, nouns, pronouns or principal parts of verbs.

many on this mb did not see the error, but have now become Churchill.

we cool bro, u know that

imusic 2015-04-19 19:46:57

note that I did not disagreed with you

In the spirit of Headley...there it is again

That said, no one can claim they misunderstand what you're saying.

It may just be a minor pet peeve with some
