Nelson Mandela is not a bad role model to have, well done young man. When I went to South Africa in 2009 I made a point of going to Robben Island and visiting the quarry where he laboured, the cell where he spent most of his time, it was deep and spiritual place for me....

You should have volunteered to spend some time in his cell to get a true feeling

I understand that Mandela is a hero for not only black people ,but all races, what is strange,is why Mandela for a cricket match.I would have thought Sir G.Sobers was a more likely hero for Holder.

some people need things in life other than sports to ground them. This young man is well grounded.

Serious question. What basis do you have for questioning Holder's statement?

Yes I do, cricket is a game mostly played in the head. If I have journey to complete i.e. bat out a day to save a game, what's wrong with reflecting on some one who had to endure a struggle of 18 years at Robben island 27 years in total only to emerge as the leader of the nation and an enduring example to the world.

It has been documented by mostly anecdotal evidence that our players of recent vintage in general are not students of West Indies cricket history. My guess is that the same is true when it comes to world history. But I think Holder has studied at UWI and probably learned a thing or two about Mandela along the way.

Whatever a man needs to use to motivate him to accomplish a great feat is ok with me.

If he said Spongebob was on his mind, would that have made you feel better about his source of inspiration? Would he have been more "emancipated"?

He also mentioned his grandfather, who could be white or East Indian for all we know.

After all Mandella has done, that's the only thing Mandela represents to you? Blackness?

Well Pot, looks like you need to do some soul searching before you start saying things about Kettle over there needing to stop relating everything to blackness

Maybe he should have said that he had visions of the demise of Test cricket and he wasn't saddened by it.

He probably didn’t know who Mandela was – he probably thought the man’s fame and distinction came from his cricketing prowess. big grin

What a closed minded and idiotic statement!

Are you suggesting that Nelson Mandela's greatness resides, and was derived, purely in his Blackness?

If Holder has said that his inspiration was say, Shakespeare, would you also have concluded that Holder was 'relating it back to [Shakespeare's] whiteness?

Kudos to Holder who is an articulate and well-spoken whose knowledge is evidently not restricted solely to cricket.
