It's just a variation of the exercise that helps you work muscles you don't work with regular squats. Stabilizer muscles especially and different heads of muscles.
Know your body and how muscles work and you will be surprised at the results. Consistency is the key.
Don't go to the Gym and try to out lift everyone, you won't get the benefit of the exercise and you might get hurt. Whenever you lift really heavy weights, your body recruits other muscles to help out, which takes away from the intended muscle. You can lift heavier weights as you gain more knowledge and strength.
Do different body parts every day. Back and biceps, chest and triceps etc... learn how to isolate different muscles and be consistent.

over training can make the body release a chemical called cortisone I think which does a bit of harm, has its use I think to repair tendons or something but otherwise when that is released means the body is over working.
Use to study fitness training, hope I remembered it right.
Anyhow, as per squats, use to do them. Although at times feel faintish, they did wonders. Had to stop after a while as me knee didn't seem to cope well with them.
Squatting is also helpful in keeping men sexually fit, as it helps circulation in the vital areas.

The way your muscles respond to stresses placed on them is to get bigger, but you are right, overwork can have the opposite affect.

i didn't do it with weights, just hands on head, up and down. My intention with training is never to bulk up, I just train to get the heart rate going and keep fit. I prefer stamina to excess muscles. I am already able to hit a cricket ball further than most so I good in that area.

I am sure you can hit a ball further than powen
