HEADLINE: Cricket no longer on top

CRICKET was the sport that created and, for decades, maintained the West Indies’ reputation for athletic excellence.

For so long the passion of its fanatical public, its strength has rapidly withered, for a variety of mostly self-inflicted reasons. It now ranks ninth among ten Test and ODI teams and, for the first time, is excluded from the eight-team Champions Trophy in 2017 in England.

Fortunately, the consequent despair of all West Indians has been lifted by performances in another sport, by the region’s magnificent athletes, mostly Jamaican with rising numbers from its smaller constituents.

As the individual now unreservedly recognised as the all-time king of the sprints, his sport’s showpiece events, Usain Bolt has been the ideal energiser to put a smile back on the faces of cricket’s sad devotees.

Bolt is a towering Jamaican with a spirited Caribbean sense of fun whose long strides cover the track with the power and speed of lightning. Barring a false start disqualification in the 2011 World Championships, he is unbeaten for seven years in either of his favoured events, the 100 and 200 metres at major championships.

Disagree with these sentiments written

Cricket and what it means to the Caribbean people isn't and cannot ever be replaced by TV based athletes competing individually

That was a serious Nation article?

WE are all fully aware that there is a problem in Cricket . Cozier therefore is stating the obvious .

It would be great if Cozier & the
other Sports Journalists in the Region , state what in their opinion , needs to be done to revive the popularity of Cricket in the Region .

There obviously are solutions to the problem with Cricket in the Region . I have in this Forum frequently
stated my opinions on what I believe must be done to not only revive Cricket in the Region ; but also make
our Players fully competitive in the International Cricket Arena .

I would like to here the opinions of
Cozier ; Becca ; Fazeer et al , regarding what they believe needs to be done to revive Cricket in the Region . Surely , they must have opinions on this matter .

I admire Michael Holding , because he is not afraid to call them as he sees them . It is quite possible that if
there were more persons in the Region like Michael Holding , things would be better in Cricket .

These guys are journalist, with a family to support.
Repeating the same topic will not get them jobs, all these guys have written about the problems in west Indies cricket
I have a different opinion on Becca and Cozier than you, because I have been reading their reports for decades, Cozier kept me and a number of cricket follow abreast of regional cricket and issues with his caribbean Cricket quarterly, a magazine that I doubt you ever heard about, until you joined this board.
I am glad Cozier and Becca can still write and someone is paying them for it.

Cricket is a community base sport, community support is a critical element to development of players . In fact all sports start with community involvement.
I first start playing table -tennis and cricket with the garden police sport club.

You seem to be implying that Freedom of Speech is non existent in the
Region .If that is the case , then WE are indeed doomed .

BTW , Michael Holding , as far as I am aware is still employed . The gist of what you seem to be implying , is
that Cozier et al are being payed by the WICB .

So that may mean that they can never be critical of those in the governance of Cricket in the Region ;
in essence this is akin to Biting the Hand that Feeds you .

I think the issue here is that our potentially talented sports people are looking towards sports like athletics rather than cricket....

Or perhaps that athletics has proactively sought out ways to identify and maximise talent whereas so much of our grassroots cricket structure is still along the lines of "it worked 50 years ago, so it should work now".
Although to be fair, it shouldn't be forgotten that Jamaica aside, 1 or 2 world class athletes for most territories is considered fantastic. But a modern cricket team needs access to at least a dozen world class players to be successful.

The youngster is Jameel Stuart, he has been called Littlte Lara, from his Primary school days.
It is good to see him growing, he just scored his third ton in his fifth game of the season

Cricket is getting the dregs when it comes to athletic ability. We have very short fast bowlers, bowlers who doh have rhythm wen dey run and are not well cordinated. The more athletic ones are gravitating into Track & Field, Football and basketball.

You are absolutely Right . The Problem with Cricket in the Region is that the people in some of Cricket Boards in the Region including the WICB , have got
so Powerful , and Arrogant ,that they do not believe that is part of their job .
