ST. JOHN’S, Antigua – The West Indies Cricket Board announced on Friday a 15-member Test squad for the Tour of Sri Lanka next month.

 SQUAD

Jason Holder (Captain), Kraigg Brathwaite (Vice Captain), Devendra Bishoo, Jermaine Blackwood

Carlos Brathwaite, Darren Bravo, Rajindra Chandrika, Shane Dowrich, Shannon Gabriel

Shai Hope, Denesh Ramdin, Kemar Roach, Marlon Samuels, Jerome Taylor, Jomel Warrican

Head WICB selector Clive Lloyd said Holder the appointment was made with an eye to the future.

“He is a young man that all of the selectors, people in the Caribbean and worldwide believe has several of the qualities that can take our team forward,” said Lloyd.

“We felt the time was right for a change and we feel he will do as well as he did when he was elevated to the position of One-day International captain ahead of the World Cup.

Lloyd added: “We had a number of detractors when he was appointed ODI captain, but he showed during the ODI series in South Africa and the World Cup that he had the qualities that were needed to take our team forward.

“We expect to get new thinking and new dynamism from him. Jason commands respect. He is a fine young man, very intelligent and he seems to get the best from the players because he is a straightforward guy. I think the players will warm to him. He has a young bunch of players and we feel he can guide them in the manner that is required for internationals.”

The 23-year-old Holder also currently holds the position of captain of the West Indies One-day International team. He has appeared in eight Tests, following his debut against New Zealand last June in his native Barbados.

The rumors were true from not too long ago then ...

Anyways best of luck to Holder. Some big hidings await in SL and Aus.

Lloyd is being too drastic in my opinion, let´s hope it works, but I think Holder is being forced ripe. Also how could the selectors justify Chandrika´s selection? Chandrika up to a year ago was not a sure pick in the Guyanese team.

Congrats to test captain Holder. All the best

Phil is getting what he want, meeting with the IPL stars and seeing who want to commit to playing test, give him a way forward, with building a team.
All the young guns will get a run, Ramdin must have pissed someone off.

WICB politics at play here.

Any wager on when Sammy will be replaced as T20 captain? Because the argument will be that if Sammy could have held on to all 3 positions at the same time, then why not Holder?

Phil did not take the job, to go along with the status core, Sammy's days as part of any team, is over.
The IPL guys along with the captain of the Red will be the leading players in the LO format.

Courtney Browne inna unnuh pweffin.

But why not, anyway?

With so many Bajans in the team, it only makes sense that they're led by a fellow Bajan.

Pollard, Russell, Bravo and Holder will be the All-rounders in the T 20, I don't see Sammy making the team in any format

Isn't that like saying only a Caucasian American should be President of the USA because they form the majority race?

It's funny but some people said the exact same thing when he was captain of all three formats.

mikesiva 2015-09-05 07:33:04

Holder becomes captain after playing only eight Tests, with an unimpressive batting average of 34, and an equally unimpressive bowling average of 35....

Newsflash - he's no Graeme Smith!

What kind of nonsense is this?

lol

Commie 2015-09-05 08:24:35

Good luck to Jason Holder.

You will need every ounce of it.

I wish you well.

What are you talking about??? Holder is an all-rounder batting in the lower order. For a very young player, his average is not bad and should only improve as he gains experience and matures with the game. For example, Carl Hooper (another all-rounder) batting average was 36.48 and bowling @ 49.42.

He definitely belongs in the team as a genuine bowling all-rounder, but the big question is if he is ready at this time to captain the test side. He made a few questionable tactical decisions when he recently captained the ODI side, but that goes with inexperience. I support Holder all the way and best of luck to him. He was thrown into this by the selector and I believe he will try his best to succeed.

Hooper was an all rounder?

Surprising yes!! He was considered a batting all-rounder, but not to the likes of Kallis and Watson. big grin big grin
