HEADLINE: Windies arrive for tough Aussie assignment

CaribbeanCricket.com 2015-11-27 07:15:44

BRISBANE, Australia, CMC – The squad, led by captain Jason Holder, arrived via New York and Los Angeles following two days of travel from the Caribbean.

West Indies will train their attention first on a five-day camp at the Allan Border Field here before taking on a young Cricket Australia XI in a four-day game starting Wednesday at the same venue.

A significant presence in the squad is that of head coach Phil Simmons who missed the recent Test and limited overs tour of Sri Lanka through suspension.

He was pulled from that tour by the West Indies Cricket Board after he bizarrely claimed in a media conference that the selection of the one-day squad had been influenced by “outside interference.”

Simmons, appointed following the ICC World Cup earlier this year, subsequently apologised after appearing before the WICB’s human resources committee, and was promptly reinstated.

The Trinidadian will be leading West Indies for the first time on an overseas tour after presiding over the home tours against England and Australia.

Going back to the 60's when I began following cricket, west Indies team is the worse team to ever tour Australia. When I say worse team, please understand that I did not say worse west Indies team, but worse international team to ever tour Australia!
I believe the outcome will not surprise anyone as we all expect the to lose every test match by an inning and none will go beyond lunch on the fourth day.

dayne 2015-11-27 14:52:22

If the WI survive the warm-up match and have a few good performances they might get the confidence needed to be competitive.

A real good WI team lost in Oz 5-1 and during the last 15-20 years we have 5-0 in OZ with stars, and by others teams real good WI teams have been white washed, brown washed and rinsed out.

It seems that there is some joy that could be had between those numbers.

you, me, my four girls, and seven preschoolers from any pre-school in the Caribbean, would be better than them lol. But putting all jokes aside as well as our Caribbean politics, a better team would be:

Cris Gayle, Devon Smith, K Brathwait, Daren Bravo, Marlon Samuel, Shiv Chanderpaul, Dwayne Bravo, Kieron Pollard - CAPTAIN, Blackwood, Dannish Ramdin, J. Taylor, S Gabriel, K Roach, Holder, Bishoo.

All the others would be on my A team, so they could be developed for the future. Pollard should have been a test player long time ago, since he is one of the few West Indian cricketers with an average of 37+ in first class cricket. He is no doubt the best natural leader I see in the WI, and he should have been the one to replace Sammy instead of Holder.

Simmons would be much happier with this team and definitely them Aussies would know they have a challenge.

Let's get this thing right. When we got beaten 5/1, we were not a very good team as yet. We had some good and experienced players, along with some emerging young players like Richards, Holding,and Roberts. But don't be deceived by that 5 /1 result, because after they beat us by 8 wkts in the first Melborne test, I can remember Bobby Simpson said "Australia has finally met their match," We then went to Perth for the second test and we beat them by an inning and 80+ runs, to level the series. It was from there on, umpires began giving us out even if the ball was way down leg whereas when they clearly hit the ball they were given not out. That 5/1 could very well have been in our favor. It was that series that turned us into a dominant team. The key though was, we had young, talented players along with experienced players. Do you see any of that on this squad?

sandisha 2015-11-27 18:22:06

In reply to imusic
I am not harsh,; I am simply calling a spade a spade. These current players are not talented and I would be surprised if they prove me wrong. This is a team that cannot bat pace, can't bat spin, can't bat medium pace and cant's play on bouncing wickets or turning wickets whether at home or on tour. Why should I be optimistic?

In reply to sandisha

You are giving them a lot of credit. If SA can lose in 3 days or less look out for 2.5 days. Only way it goes so long is if they bat first and amass over 500 over 2 days and then bowl us out within the next 2.

rillo 2015-11-27 20:25:07

In reply to sandisha

Bobby was right in that they met their match. Our bowlers were giving as good as we got. Our outfielders were not prepared for such fast pitches and were dropping catches all over the slips.
Late in the series did we start finding our range.
That was the beginning of best run we have seen of a WI team.
This tour is way way from those guys. We have no talent on this team. neither in bowling nor batting. Our batting is very, very weak and we will get exposed.

Wow, you have 4girls,no boy ,man u work hard, I had ( have) 3 , they are all great,

The team u quoted only have 2 players Chris and Shiv, all the rest are bits except Jerome and Kemar.
The results would be the same as this new team, for the past 20 years we have failed on and off the field.

" before taking on a young Cricket Australia XI in a four-day game starting Wednesday at the same venue"

This windies team is so weak that I am prepared to make two non monetary bets on the first warm up game.

1. No matter the age group of the young Cricket Australia X1, they will beat us by over 150 runs if they bat first, and over 6 wickets if they bat last.

2. That game will not last 4 days if conditions are good. Maybe three days at most

Trust me, I am not hard on the players because you pick what you have. For the past 15 years we have failed to develop our game, despite the fact that we seem to have more money to spend. I mean cricket is flat out dead in the region and we first have to blame our poor administrators then our politics. In the NBA, the Rockets fired their head coach Kevin McHale, just because the team had a slow start. In the West Indies, we allow our President, selectors, coaches to do what they want and no one touches them. I mean what is the justification for electing Cameron and Nanthan for a second term with the embarrassment we went through? To make matters worse, we allowed them to fire our better players? This is unheard of. It should start from the top and not with the players.

A team is as good as its farm system. In our case our farm system is our is our first class cricket, since it is the yard stick used to bring in new crop of players on the windies team. But look what we are getting in 2015: In a first class match in 2015, teams declaring at 24/7 and game inside of two days? yet these guys are paid good money just to be on contract. 24/7 before lunch and instead of placing some kind of sanction on players and coach. the board investigating the wicket? All LI players should be charged 90% of their match fee and demand better cricket. It's unacceptable!

thefacts 2015-11-28 06:38:58

One interesting statistic (on the sideline) for me will be:

ATTENDANCE

--

1st test is at Hobart. ---> don't have much data right now on the kind of attendance the venue has witnessed in recent test matches. But West Indies played Australia at this venue in 2005.

The Attendance of that Game was the following:
Day.1 -> 5,524
Day.2 -> 12,254
Day.3 -> 6,211
Day.4 -> 3,411
Day.5 -> 756

Match Total -> 28186

2nd Test is the Boxing Day Test Match in Melbourne and 3rd Test is the New Years Test Match at Sydney. Both Witness very high Turnouts historically.

It will be very interesting to see, what kind of Attendance is witnessed for the 3 tests.

It could have implications for the future!

(Note This is the longest gap already of a West Indies tour to Australia)

Last tour was in 2009 -- so WI going after 6 years.

Before that 2005, 2000, 1996, 1992, 1988, 1984, 1981, 1979... etc

--

And not to leave it to people's imagination, as to what could be the implications:

This is our last tour to Australia for the FTP 2019!

Now England, India and Pakistan have the other slots for MCG and SCG Tests. (Rotation basis)

because SA and NZ (no longer tests, but ODI's and T20;s) have their own Boxing Day & New Year Cricket. So they don't reckon for these tests in Australia.

That leaves one slot open -->

and its a straight shoot out between WI and SL for that.

--

It's a possibility that SL could replace WI as the team with 3 TESTS (incl MCG, SCG) after 2019. (which could be based on Attendance and TV interests) and WI might get 2 Tests, like it got from Australia in 2015 on Tour.

(Please note: WI are playing at these venues for the 1st time in 15 years, as Australia had replaced them earlier with Tests at Adelaide, Perth, Brisbane and Hobart in 2005 and 2009 tours)

So this is going to be interesting to see, what kind of attendance WI get.

I know, all of this, is beyond the realms of WICB and their Batty Lickers Imagination.

But its FOOD FOR THOUGHT!

In reply to sandisha I'm of mind that warm up games should be of 40 overs, just in case if senior team gets embussass: they, fans n administration can....fill in.

You guys way too negative.

With Coach Simmons in charge, we're certain to get the best out of the assembled players, players with an abundance of talent just waiting on a Coach Simmons caliber of leadership to transform such promise from mere potential to kinetic level.
