On the opening day of a very promising Test Series against an exciting opposition team and the stadium is almost empty. A series win for India could take them to number 1 in the Test Ranking- all the more reason for the fans to come out and support the boys.
In smaller states like the those found in the WI, you can blame small populations for empty stadiums but in India, if you cannot draw 20,000 to 30,000 people then TEST cricket is in bigger problem than we can imagine.

Team India and BCCI care, but the people don't..Test match cricket was always deemed elitist..You will probably see better attended test matches in Chennai,Kolkata, may be Mumbai and Bangalore..

Kolkata and Indore had sizeable crowds. Kanpur was in the immediate aftermath of Uri and people were understandably worried about radical Islamic terrorist attacks..
