Sammy leads CU to narrow victory

The 2016 edition of the Kia Oval season finale proved to be a bit of a damp squib as far as its primary intent was concerned.

The Yorkshire Tea20 charity all-star match between Cricket United and Surrey All-Stars raised “just” £100,000, less than a third of what was collected in 2015. But on the pitch, the fixture was a huge success, providing an enthralling and exhilarating game of cricket.

With crowd pleasing knocks from Kevin Pietersen, former West Indies captain Daren Sammy and Surrey hero Azhar Mahmood, it came down to the final ball, with Indian legend Harbhajan Singh and Surrey’s Mat Pillans just failing to get their side home. The match was sponsored by Yorkshire Tea, who have supported cricket for a number of years.

Owais Shah made 59, and Sammy contributed a quickfire 20, as Cricket United ended their 20 overs on 143-7.

With a bowling attack including former West Indies and Saint Lucia Zouks pacer Tino Best, Pakistan off-spinner Saeed Ajmal, Pakistani allrounder Yasir Arafat, and former England Test star, Monty Panesar, Sammy was responsible for the first Surrey wicket, leaving the “home” team 24-1 in the early going.

But former England skipper Kevin Pietersen staged a brilliant recovery, going for an even 50 before being taken by Ajmal. After 15 overs, Surrey were suddenly 95-3, chasing 144 to win. After 19, they were within 11, with captain Sammy entrusting Tymal Mills of Sussex and England to deliver the death over.

A great contrast to what the West Indies were doing in the United Arab Emirates.
