Yard All Time XI to tackle B-dos
In reply to DIEHARD
Hahaha! :
Big side that. Imagine, neither J.K. Holt nor Bam Bam Weekes on this side!
Val and Adams, two leg-spinners. Collie the off-spinner. Gayle to turn over a few. And a wicked pace unit with Gillie, Mikey and Courtney.
The only change I'd make is to put Mikey ahead of Val in the batting order. He was a far, far better bat.
Oh yes, I would also spin a coin to decide between Walsh and Val for the number 11 man!
//
In reply to DIEHARD
Wouldn't Maurice Foster make a Jamaican middle order ahead of Adams? He might captain the team too. What about Pato? If the track fast he bound to play.
In reply to DIEHARD

Deryck Murray, Bernard Julien and Inshan Ali must play for Trinidad.
I assume these gentlemen are at their prime. I am at first tempted to offer up a Barbados "B" team, but audacity of the challenge is breathtaking.
I have to go for the knockout punch.
So go ahead and try it against this team

Gayle and Rae to open against Worrells choice, Hall and Griffith
Gayle starts with a four off Hall
in the second over with the score on 5, Rae edges Griffith to wkpr Walcott
Rae out for 1
Jamaica 6/1
Gayle then proceeds to plunder Hall and Griffith including two massive sixes off Griffith
Gayle races to 23 in a short time Jamaica 31 with Rowe on 5. Worrell takes off Griffith replaces him with Marshall
.Marshall comes immediately around the wicket to Gayle and has him beaten by outswingers
.eventually Gayle not using his feet and slashes at one moving away and is caught in the covers by Sobers! Gayle c Sobers b Marshall 23, Jamaica 31/2.
Immediately Garner is introduced next over and he starts with a devastating Yorker to Rowe who gets the ball on his toes LBW
.Rowe lbw Garner 5 ,,,Jamaica 31/3
But there is no more luck for the Bajan duo as Massa George and Jimmy Adams carries Jamaica to lunch 76/3 Headley 26 Adams 15 extras 4.
After lunch Headley and Adams continue to frustrate the Bajan four prong until Sobers is introduced bowling left arm spin and has Adams edging one that turned to slip ..Adams c Greenidge b Sobers 42
Jamaica 148/4 Headley 66 extras 9 the partnership yielded 117
.they go to tea on 159/4 Headley 70 Collie Smith 7.

.Haynes and Hunte carries Barbados to lunch 42/1 Haynes 16 Hunte his trademark 4 off Holding.
After lunch a devastating spell of fast bowling by Michael Holding leaves Barbados in tatters
..Haynes is bowled for 20, Hunte caught behind by Dujon for 11, Walcott lbw for 2 and Worrell is also spectacularly bowled for a duck
..Barbados reeling at 51/5 Holding 4 for 14 with a sedate Weekes not out scoreless at the crease
Sabina is a uproar..the crowd is bawling
from the pavilion steps a figure collars up with his trade mark walk
Sobers.
Holding first ball to Sobers is so fast you cant see it
all you see is Sobers flash his bat
.four runs! The Jamaican crowd bawls for murder
..the second ball a bouncer
a fast flash and hook
six runs
.the crowd is in ecstasy!...for the next ten overs Sobers and Holding engage in a duel that is unforgettable
.but eventually Holding tires replaced by Walsh and Valentine and Sobers and Weekes carries Barbados to tea
Barbados 122/5 Sobers 42 Weekes 23 extras 6
After tea Sobers continues to plunder the Jamaican bowling before he mistimes a turning ball from Valentine and is caught at silly mid on for 78 Weekes is now on 49 Barbados 193/6 ( from 51/5, a partnership of 142) extras 24 a mini slide orchestrated by the spin of Valentine removes Marshall 12 and Garner7 leaving Weekes unbeaten at close of play on 76, Griffith 0 Barbados 252 /8 extras 27 Holding 4 Valentine 3 Gilchrist 1
HOW WUNNA LIKE MUH FUH IMAGINATION?
Love Guyana's batting...if not on par it is close to Bim's. Guyana's problem is de bowling so dem could only at best play draw cricket
In reply to Oilah
most of the guys in a Guyana alltime X1 come from the same era
Combined Islands
Stuart Williams
Jim Allen
Richards
Richardson
Irving Shillingford
Arthurton
Ridley Jacobs
Winston Benjamin
Roberts
Ambrose
Kenneth Benjamin
Come in VOR and make your correction
In reply to Oilah
Any Winston is Davis.
Ralston Otto ahead of Arthurton
I would even put Richy to open instead of Stuart and play Parry as a spinner.
In reply to WestDem
Clyde Butts??
In reply to analyst-kid
Top class!
One thing though. You did not bowl the top all-rounder.
You leave out Collie Smith from the bowling attack!
...... and dat's why Barbados win!
//
In reply to WestDem
yuh serious ?? Mikey tek off he hat??? no wonder he was`pissed
In reply to Ewart
actually Barbados didn't win...its a five day match with three days and two innings to go....Barbados goes into the third day with a slight lead of 13 with two wickets in hand and Everton Weekes 76 not out.
In reply to analyst-kid
Nice!
Can't remember whether I listened to this game on the radio or was actually there. You make it seem real.
In reply to tops
Tenks I forgot about Winston Davis. I would definitely remove Kenneth Benjamin for Davis
In reply to Oilah
Norbert Phillip was a very good player too, but I can't see who he will replace.
In reply to ponderiver
Charlie Davis has to play for T&T
In reply to DIEHARD
Renford Pinnock and Foster very successful Shell Shield batsmen. Barratt the leg spinner was a very good at Shell Shield
I am sorry but Patto play over Walsh! Pace like fire!
In reply to ProWI... so we play your side on a spinning friendly track.
In reply to analyst-kid... wrong, back then, man win toss and bat.
In reply to XDFIX
Patto, Holding, Gilchrist, Walsh vs Macco, Hall, Garner, Sylvester
MAAANNNN dat is some pace
In reply to XDFIX
I am sorry but Patto play over Walsh! Pace like fire!
Rhatid Jamaica must be really strong when the greatest wicket taker in the history of west indies cricket cant mek di side
In reply to Oilah... and worth going miles to see!
In reply to ponderiver... that's because we playing one match ... not a career.
In reply to natty_forever
but we talking bout di greatest wicket taker in the history of west indies cricket think of all of the bajan greats and none can match walsh but walshy cant mek di Jamaica side ???
In reply to ponderiver... history lesson on Wednesday. He can make the side, just not every match.
My Guyana XI:
1. Roy Fredericks
2. Rohan Kanhai
3. Basil Butcher
4. Alvin Kallicharran
5. Shivnarine Chanderpaul
6. Clive Lloyd (C)
7. Carl Hooper
8. Robert Christiani (Wk)
9. Devendra Bishoo
10.Lance Gibbs
11.Colin Croft
In reply to natty_forever
wid Marshall Garner,Hall and Griffith , you bat first?...Think of it.
In reply to analyst-kid.. I know, us inexperienced captains would.
In reply to ponderiver
A good thing Gayle never had to face Charlie in his pre-injury prime. Helmets give the modern player too much confidence, but Charlie then vs Gayle now, would see him rip Gayle's head off his body. Gayle would need that split second to get out of the way of Charlie's snorter; that extra weight on his head would make him very vulnerable.
In reply to ProWI... aaah these oldsters and their past ...
In reply to ProWI
the only two Bajan bowlers that Gayle would have a problem with would have been Marshall and Sylvester Clarke
No disrespect intended but Gayle woulda pick breadfruit with the rest and that includes chukie too.
when Gayle is on the rampage fielders become spectators and spectators become fielders.
As for the much vaunted batting line of Bim, Mikey Patto Gilchrist and Walsh would run through them like a dose of salts
only one West Indian fastbowler I have seen repeatedly bother Bajan batsmen of the 1970s and 1980s: ANDY ROBERTS.
In reply to ponderiver
them old guys like Weekes, Worrell Walcott and Sobers would have faced Lindwall and Miller and Trueman...so don't think them don't know real pace!
In reply to analyst-kid
That is the one and oly one. Bajans love fast bowling. Walcott was Gayle only a few classes better.
In reply to analyst-kid
Thompson was a special case for a brief period 74/76 not much after that
its a myth about Bajans and pace...... medium pacers yes but they ran from real pace the same as Surya's lot
Dont tell me about Sobers and that 365 that attack was very very military medium
In reply to WestDem
I would put neither Shiv nor Hooper can be before Butcher and Solomon.
In reply to ponderiver
Hunte and Smith killed Gille career in the mudland.
In reply to ponderiver
statham, and Lillie was medium
In reply to ponderiver
Yuh calling Dennis Lillee Military medium? I guess you would do the same to McKenzie and Hawke too? Laffable!
In reply to ponderiver
Dat is why Uton Dowe got de licks and Carlisle hooked Patto off his nose to de scoreboard at Kensington.
There was a time Roberts ran all the bajan batsmen except for Collis King and Ricky Craig. Otherwise pace was pummelled.
In reply to analyst-kid
On uncovered pitches too.
In reply to Outswinger
I remember well my cousin coming in de house from Kensington full of excitement saying how Roberts had men frighten wid de pace and how collis went out and pelt bat like a madman
In reply to Oilah
Yea. Pelting bat and all the balls going through fly slip?
In reply to Outswinger
read my post again then show me where i said that
all yuh oldtimers were bigging up lillee because he lix dung a few of yuh boys in in 75
But once di guyanese freddo and later Kalli beat him like a stepchile all yuh find mouth
for the record lilee was never as fast as Thompson , he had a beautiful action though
In reply to FuzzyWuzzy
Did you see it? I hear it was pure excitement at Kensington
In reply to ponderiver
Lillee was genuine pace but next to Thommo in his prime all bowlers would have looked the slower of the two
In reply to Oilah
Yup....brought Peter Lashley and Gerry Harding's careers to an end. Ashby immediately got sick and poor Harding had to move up to opener. Nolan got a second ball snorter.
Edit. Actually it was lashley who failed to open that caused Harding to have to open in his first match....just doubled checked the score board. Lashley retired after that match...to be fair he was getting on in age and past his best
In reply to Outswinger
You picking Butcher and Salomon based on what again? Shiv can't mek an all Guyanese team says what a fcuk fool you are..: Hooper will always mek my Guyana best team!
In reply to WestDem
Butcher not Solomon could make that team ahead of Hooper
In reply to FuzzyWuzzy
Why? Pick Butcher to replace a batsman, Hooper is Guyana's best all rounder ever.
In reply to WestDem
Butcher was a leg apinner
So wuh happened to McMorris - he could make any Jamaican test eleven. This old timer told me to type that.
How good was he?
In reply to FuzzyWuzzy
Meh already gat dat covered with Bishoo... Sir Carl Hooper mek any all time Guyana team.. he is our best all round ever.
In reply to TheTrail
Bull McMorris was solid.... but he could not make the team ahead of those names listed on this thread.
//
In reply to ponderiver Freddo and Kalli never faced Lillee pre-back injury. No comparison of the Lillee they faced to the young Lillee Sobers and co. faced. Dont be a history revisionist. As fpr fastbowlers chasing batsmen we dont know for sure how Weekes and co. would have coped with Holding and Patto but I dont recall less heralded Bajan bats like Emmerson Trotman or Thelston Payne being to bothered by them. What i can tell you is that Mo Foster and Dujon used to wilt at sight ofthe Bajan quicks of their time. Why even useless Tino Best used to run Samuels brother.
Some credit must be given to Marshall and the dreaded Sylvester Clarke. Marshall made an aging Gavaskar abandon his opening position down here in 1983 and hit a happy hooking Mohinder Armanath in his mouth. But this guy Clarke...from England to South Africa this guy put fear in world class batsmen. I stand by my point though....only Roberts put living fear in Bajan batsmen!
In reply to analyst-kid
But which Bajan batsmen? The Peter Lashley story is legend and we know the likes of Noland Clarke and Geoff Greenidge struggled against Roberts but that was also a low point in Barbados batsmanship generally. Conversely guys like Ricky Skeete, Emmerson Trotman and Thelston Payne came along and thrived against Roberts and co. Perhaps Roberts was not at his most vicious by then but he was still the best bowler in WI cricket at that time.
By the time Des Haynes and Carlisle Best came along Roberts was still very good but was relying more on seam and guile to prise out batsmen. Had a great laugh from Andy years ago in his supermarket in Antigua. He was relaying how befuddled Best was facing Andy...could not get bat to ball while Dessie was playing him comfortably. Carlisle went up to Dessie at end of the over and asked: "But, but, but, but Dessie, how, how, you getting this man play a' t'all..."
In reply to Ewart
If you look at McMorris's dismal test record and then to have never seen him bat, you might conclude he wasn't much. However, this individual regards him highly. If any of the batsmen on "DIEHARD's" all-time eleven "got injured" McMorris would be my first choice as replacement.

In reply to CWWeekes
No disagreement there. I watched McMorris bat many times from the press vbox (i.e. right behind the stumps) as well as from the Members Pavilion at Bina, and I rate him highly, as I do Pinny and Shotgun, both of whom would take second place to him in the opening slot.
Nevertheless, as I said, I could not put him on an All-Jamaica team ahead of those top five bats.
//
In reply to Ewart
No disagreement Mr. Ewart.I know your background. My original post was really to add to your response to "TRAIL'S" post.
In reply to Outswinger
You got to be kidding me. Shiv is one of the greatest, if not greatest Guyanese batsmen of all times.
In reply to Outswinger
There was a time Roberts ran all the bajan batsmen except for Collis King and Ricky Craig. Otherwise pace was pummelled.
I was at Kensington in 1977, 80 and 81. It was nuff licks for Roberts and Davis.
In reply to Oilah
Patto, Holding, Gilchrist, Walsh vs Macco, Hall, Garner, Sylvester
MAAANNNN dat is some pace
Wayne Daniel and Hartley Alleyne were the quickest of the Bajan bowlers. Daniel had issues with his run up, but when he got it right, I seen some trinis run for their lives.
In reply to analyst-kid
If you are playing Jamaica with Gayle opening you don't start with Hall and Griffith. Gayle will eat Hall alive. If wicket not seaming, he may Griffith alive too. On the other hand, Gayle would find, Sobers and Marshall a handful since they swing the ball so much. Also when Gayle sees a lefthander...
Alan Rae is a well known run from pace guy. Rowe wouldnt score very much against Garner or Marshall. This coming from a die hard Rowe fan.
Headley I can make no comment on.
Dujon was very talented, but like Sarwan, he never saw a short ball he didnt like.
Jimmy could be a problem.
Based on what I saw of Foster and McMorris, I would have to put them in a team against Bim. Pinnock could be a nuisance.
Jamaican pace attack would be too much for Greenidge. If the ball isnt moving away from him, Haynes would destroy the JA pace attack on a reasonable wicket (like Kensington).
The Guyanese batting would be a challenge for the Bajan bowlers. Croft could be a handful. Gibbs, if the wicket starts to breakup.
If Weekes, Worrell and Walcott were as good as advertised, it would be extremely difficult to bowl that team out twice.
In reply to Baje
Man read de thing good nuh....this is what I wrote:
Gayle then proceeds to plunder Hall and Griffith including two massive sixes off Griffith Gayle races to 23 in a short time
then.....
Immediately Garner is introduced next over and he starts with a devastating Yorker to Rowe who gets the ball on his toes LBW .Rowe lbw Garner 5 ,,,Jamaica 31/3
But there is no more luck for the Bajan duo as Massa George and Jimmy Adams carries Jamaica to lunch 76/3 Headley 26 Adams 15 extras 4.
In reply to Baje
Yes Daniel was VERY fast early in his career but didn't have the control and great bats would make wayward bowlers even the very quick ones pay. I remember seeing George Braffit putting a real asswhipping pon Daniel one evening at Banks just before Daniel played for the West Indies. Don't think I ever saw Hartley Alleyne but his name always comes up when bajans talk about our fast bowlers
In reply to analyst-kid
I don't think you would have seen Charlie Griffith in his prime to envision Gayle putting the kind of lashes you imagine off a Griffith.
I grew up with Charlie as my fast bowler hero. I spent some of my early years near the Empire cricket club in Bank Hall. One of my older brothers would take me around on Saturdays to follow the Empire matches against the likes of Spartan and Wanderers. I ran into bowl like Charlie did. In my youth I even parted my hair like Charlie, down the middle. I knew Charlie Griffith and your Charlie bowling to Gayle is not one I grew up knowing.
BTW, Sobers would not be fielding in the covers.
C'dear you mean you ain giving Gayle no credit atall? You must be fair. He only score 23 in this fantasy match so what if Charlie took some hand? Even the great ones take hand at some point on some pitch.
Charlie knows me very well having been a good friend of my father....he teased me at a funeral recently about a secret sibling...I have talked with Garner and heard him tell me things Charlie taught him re bowling...Charlie is a giant.
How you know Sobers ain purposely put himself there in the covers to await that slash from Gayle? I know where Sobers usually fields but you can't be so rigid in real cricket...you can improvise.
In reply to Baje
I remember Hartley Alleyne being a top regional bowler. Not necessarily the quickest and I think that is what kept him out of West Indies team.
