Cricinfo:

8.14pm That's stumps on the first day. Steven Smith is congratulated by Misbah and his team-mates. He raises his bat and acknowledges the applause from a record Gabba crowd - 26,343 - highest ever first day crowd outside of an Ashes Test match. Warner and Renshaw blunted the new ball and added 70 for the first wicket before Amir won a marginal lbw decision against Warner from umpire Gould. In the next over, Khawaja flicked a catch right into the lap of Misbah at short midwicket. Renshaw and Smith, though, regrouped and snatched the initiative from Pakistan.

A who seh test cricket dead?

Mohammad Amir to Smith, no run, good length and viciously curves away outside off. Smith was searching for the inswinger. Beaten past the outside edge. Or not. Hotspot picks up a little white blotch. Snicko detects a spike. Sarfraz dives across to his right and takes it. Faint edge, no appeal from Pakistan, they did not pick up the tickle.... They take a catch off Amir, but it all amounts to nothing
lol

Granted Asad reached a century by going from 97 to 100 with a 3 off the 1st ball of the last over of the day's play, but he should have protected Riaz who couldn't survive the rest of the over.

108 needed on the last day with 2 wickets remaining

I thought so too. He should've taken 2 off that first ball and face the other five balls or as many as possible. As the established bat he should've waited towards the end of the over to push for the single.

Good fight back though.

Pakistan the team that always surprises, reports suggests that the wicket quickened when they batted first time round, but wickets were lost due to lack of application all the same.If Pakistan had gone on to win,not many people would be surprised.

Hazlewood to Asad Shafiq, no run, that looks closer than the previous one. Huge appeal. No, says umpire Illingworth. Australia don't review. only question is height. Yes, it's missing the stumps. Fullish on off, nips back in and strikes Shafiq in front of middle.

He bounced him out

Shafiq c Warner b Starc 138(207) [4s-13 6s-1]

144.2
Starc to Shafiq, out Caught by Warner!! And the drama is back. Too good even for the man batting at 138. Ferociuos, rather violent pace and rear off the surface squeezes out Starc getting in a well-directed bouncer

144.2
Starc to Asad Shafiq, OUT, snorter from Starc. And Australia strike. Is that the delivery that changes this Test match? The front foot is fine. Australia are pumped. Goes wide of the crease from around the wicket and directs his bouncer at Shafiq's badge. The key to that delivery was the length. It wasn't pitched too short. More a back of a length, but he was aided by the bounce in this pitch. Shafiq felt he can play instead of duck. It takes the glove and shoulder of the bat and lobs to Warner at gully who backtracks, takes a two-handed overhead catch and throws the ball miles in the air. Sensational delivery to end an even better innings. Fantastic stuff from Shafiq.

RUN OUT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Smith pelts down the stumps

144.6
Starc to Yasir Shah, OUT, that's the end of the Test match. A lackadaisical way to end the game. The umpire gives him out on the field. A yorker on off and middle, Yasir outside-edges his flick to Smith at second slip. He is so disappointed with his shot that he continues to look at his partner in search of an impossible run. Smith, though, is quick on it and effects a direct hit at the striker's end.

Yasir Shah run out 33 (66b 4x4 0x6) SR: 50.00

144.6
Starc to Yasir Shah, out Yasir Shah Run Out!! A direct hit and what an end to an incredible Test match? Completely anti-climactic must admit. But that is exactly how the entire Test match has been. A full swivering in delivery right on the money. Yasir Shah looks happy to have managed to get some bat on it to dig it out and he gifts himself a 'well done with that' stroll in the park outside the crease. The ball in the process rolls to second slip, where Smith grabs the ball and darts it on the stumps. Catches Yasir outside the crease. Oh dear.

Asad Shafiq gets the MOM

Great innings there

Asad Shafiq, the undisputed Man of the Match: "Yes I was trying hard. Was hitting the ball well in the nets and it was just a matter of time before I had a good innings. The tailenders showed a lot of courage and a lot of firm and from nowhere we almost chased a big total. The energy was always there and we were always going to go for the win."

Narper 2016-12-18 23:28:09

Misbah looks like he just got up from sleep wink

Misbah: " I am very happy. After the first innings when we got out for 142, I am very happy with the way we came back. A lot of positives, Younis getting into form, Azhar Ali doing well, Asad Shafiq playing superbly and the bowlers as well. Very proud of this team and our performance. The hope was always there, even when Asad fell I was very hopeful. Everyone in the team now has the belief that we could pull things back in the coming matches."

I really like cappo Smith....likeable chap

Steve Smith: I lost my fingernails. It was hard work and a lot of credit has to go to the way these guys played. Shows the class of Starc and his character to run in with the 60-over ball and generate that pace to keep bowling his heart out. Have to keep believing all the time and credit to Shafiq to push us all the way. [About not enforcing the follow on] Wouldn't have changed the approach. Was too close a game for my liking, an amazing game of cricket and I am sure the ratings were amazing as well

Pakistan Zindabad!
Pakistan makes test cricket more interesting than a "whodunit".They have played test cricket like this since as far back as I can remember.
