Best WI Opening Pair of All Times

Slipfeeler 2016-12-28 12:16:06

My favourite opening pair is Gordon Greenidge and Desmond Haynes. Of course, I admire batsmen like Alvin Kallicharan, Roy Fredricks; Chris Gayle; Steven Comacho; Jimmy Adams.

I think Greenidge and Haynes were the longest WI opening pair but I am open to be corrected.

Alvin Kallicharran opened the batting twice.

Jimmy Adam opened the batting once.

All others mentioned were bona _fide opening batsmen.

Greenidge and Haynes as a pair beats everyone else hands down...Maybe the best opening pair of all time

he is entitled to look for #2 of windies' time. #1 isn't even an argument.

Greenidge & Haynes or Hayden & Langer.

A coin toss between the two partnerships as the best of all-time, nobody else comes close.

We know that even Lawrence Rowe and Richard Austin opened the batting for WI on separate occasions not as a pair, I was just trying to remember some players who opened for WI.

In terms of numbers one will never argue against Greenidge and Haynes being our best opening pair.
But in terms of potential quality, I think Greenidge and Richard Austin (Danny Germs) would have have become the best. In fact, if Austin had not played the fool with drugs and bad choices, I do not think Haynes would have made the WI team. Danny had so much class and cricket gifts, but literally destroyed himself. I will go so far and say that we might not have had Jeff Dujon on the WI team, if "Danny Germs" simply wanted to play as a batsman/keeper (at their prime, Danny Germs was a better keeper than Jeffrey and certainly a better batsman)

I know I will be put down for touting Danny Germs so much, but he really was that good/excellent. On a personal level I have hard time deciding who was our best opener over the past 80 years(Greenidge, Hunte, Fredricks, Stolleymer, Haynes or Rae)

Emir 2016-12-29 11:11:39

Ganga and Gayle.

Statistically they were the best opening pair in the history of WI cricket. This is an example of how stats can at times be useless.

Gordon and Desmond. End of story

Danny Germs was such an all-round cricketer, with bat, ball and wicketkeeping. The guy could bowl both spin and medium pace at an international level. Such a self-inflicted loss of his cricket career. Guy was such a sportsman, a wicked soccer star and an avid table tennis player.

Richard Austin second to Gary Sobers in the cricketing sense.

imusic 2016-12-30 12:34:18

After Gary Sobers and some daylight, Bernard Julien and Dwayne Bravo are the next best all rounders in West Indies cricket.

Richard Austin isn't daylight. Myth based on perceived potential....not performance

I agree on production you couldn't count him in. But in the sense of allround cricket ability I would put him ahead of Julien and Bravo.

1) Greenidge and Haynes
2) Fredericks and Rowe (short but sweet)
