That quartet can win the NCAA 4X100m. If someone running under 47 replaces Chambers they could win the 4x400m too.

Yes sir best time of the year.

BTW I suspect Nathon Allen may not be eligible to run this year for Auburn since he would have just registered but I am not sure.

Keep me updated.

This performance by Morris and Bryan in the U18 400m at Carifta Trials 2016 gave me a lot of hope for improvement. Neither one had run sub 48 before. I will be keen to see what they do this year.

Likewise. Two very good efforts on their part. No word on Bann? Such a good talent that was nonexistent the past two ISSA champs.I'm very optimistic.......again Headley.

Thanks. I think Matherson is smooth as silk when running, and hopefully no injury this year or down the road. I also think the class 1 record is in jeopardy. This kid is talent written all over. Fluent;Effortless;Natural.
Just so you know, both Bann and Dontre will be at champs as per Track Alerts preview posted today. Watch out.!!!!

JC meet is tomorrow.
Blood boiling already.

Good news re: Bann and Williams. If Tyreke Bryan and/or Morris is back then we have a decent class 1 4x400m.

I was wondering about the track at Melbourne. Actually went on Google Earth to spy but the site was showing no construction activity. End of Feb sounds good.

Nathaniel Bann of Kingston College made his return in his senior season, and will be looking to be one of the Purple’s leading the charge at Champs 2017. The former Class Three 400m champion took to the track in the 2 lap event before returning to lead his squad to victory in the 4x300m relay in 2:27.73 seconds.

This will be of interest to you. No report of Dontre though.

RoyalDad 2017-01-10 18:46:00

In reply to Headley

Dontre was at the JC meet running a 800. TA has pics of him running. I am extremely nervous about Bann running these shorter sprints. I would hope they would gradually bring him along, also Dontre. Simply cant afford another break down with both or three( Matherson ).We have a solid class 1 this time around, including Bryan,Morris etc.Let's get it right this time.If all report fit,our class 1 will crush all comers( Matherson,Bann,Williams and Hamilton ).

Headley 2017-01-10 20:41:31

In reply to RoyalDad

class 1 will crush all comers( Matherson,Bann,Williams and Hamilton ).

Class 1 comments

I cannot see KC winning the 4x400m unless Dontre, Bann, Bryan and Morris surprise me with sub 47 secs. All of them have run 47 plus in the past.

A fit Matherson should win the 100m and could win the 200m. If I were the coach I would take no chances and only run him in the 100m and the 100m relay. KC class 1 should win the 1500m, 2000m steeple, 5000m open and should get second in all three plus win/second the medley relay. KC should be second in the two relays and maybe the 400m and two of the top 4 places in the 800m.

A fit class 1 Cbar squad will win the 110 m hurdles, 4x100m relay, 200m, 400m, 4x400 and come second in the 100m, 200m, 110m hurdles.

It will be a big race for second in the 400m - Carpenter, Dontre, Bann, Bailey and Ledgester

No info on the 400m hurdles.

RoyalDad 2017-01-11 05:54:39

In reply to Headley

Like your point with Matherson running only the 100. Lets see how fit he is,or how well he has recovered. I think overall, our 400 class 1 runners are better than Cbar with the exception of course Taylor. I have to believe also that Bann,Dontre and Bryan gives us a whopping advantage barring Taylor's heroics. Is Carpenter still at CBar? Douglas Forrest this weekend. More light will shed ...hopefully.

Headley 2017-01-11 10:17:32

In reply to RoyalDad

Matherson is fully recovered. After Champs last year he went to Carifta and won the U18 100m and ran on both the 100m and 400m relays. (Yes he runs a good 400m). I am thinking he's such a special 100m talent that I would use him sparingly for now.

CBar may have Carpenter and Brandon Heath I believe. As you said at the Doug Forrest, we should see.

RoyalDad 2017-01-11 15:48:26

In reply to Headley

New policy in regards to how much events an athlete can compete in this year. How will it affect Champs? Two individual and 2 relays per athlete. Is that so?

Bann,Matherson,Williams,Rogers,Bryan,Hamilton. Core guys right now. Others play important role too, but these guys are our bread and butter. I believe everyone else moving up in class, so have to see how they work out.

Headley 2017-01-11 19:49:52

In reply to RoyalDad

Buchanan the long distance runner came 3rd in steeple last year and should win this year. Has been running very well with Rogers in the 5ks so far this season. Came 2nd last year. Good youth. I like his dedication a lot. Will look him up when I get to Ja and see what his plans are.

Kristof Darby did well in 1500 and steeple last year. Could top 3 in 1500 this year and 2nd in steeple.

Rowe and Boyd expected to do well this year in 800m class 1.

Our distance programme across all classes is doing well and Rogers and Buchanan may have a lot to do with it.

Headley 2017-01-12 19:03:40

In reply to RoyalDad

The new policy will not affect us. Its very rare for KC to enter an athlete in four events.

Remember Terrique Stennett who ran 11.24 for fourth in the class 3 100m last year. He will be back in class 3 this year.

RoyalDad 2017-01-13 12:00:39

In reply to Headley

I was looking back at Gibson last year and we did some very good sprinting all classes. I remember Stennett. All bases seem covered this year. And we can finally counter the vaunted Cbar quartet of Wilson,Stevens,Taylor and Russell.

Headley 2017-01-14 08:29:27

In reply to RoyalDad

Yes it seems we have good athletes across all classes this year. The results today at the Doug Forrest and next week at McKinley/Wint should be a good clue.

At the JC/Purewater meet last weekend the class 3 boys 800m result was as below.

1 Taylor, Tyrese Bog Walk High 2:08.30
2 Blake, J'Voughnn Jamaica College 2:09.19

Now I see in today's Gleaner that J'Voughnn Brown was awarded the most outstanding male athlete. There was no mention of Tyrese Taylor. I can only assume he was disqualified. But it seems strange especially since Taylor was highly praised earlier in the week. (Seems they got Brown's name wrong too.)

EDWIN Allen High's Ackelia Smith and J'voughnn Brown of Jamaica College walked away with the trophies for most outstanding female and male performers respectively at yesterday's JC Purewater/Danny Williams Awards function.

RoyalDad 2017-01-20 10:00:10

In reply to Headley

I guess both KC and CBar are just feeling out each other at this early stage.

Headley 2017-01-20 13:00:13

In reply to RoyalDad

Yes plenty feeling out going on, especially at the class 3 and class 2 level. The class 3s are largely untested and the first year class 2s are under examination to see how they make the transition.

It seems KC has made good progress in the distance events. Fair progress in the middle distance and the throws. Apart from Matherson and the untested Stennett we don't have dominant sprinters. Our jumping is so so.

Our class 3 looks good (check out the twins Geovanni and Gianni Henry in the 800m and 1500m)and Rogers will help us to get some class 2 and open event points. Bann, Dontre, Bryan etc will decide how our class 1 sprinting goes (bearing in mind my earlier comments re: Matherson).

The improvement in the depth of the 800ms runners means we will have a decent medley relay.

RoyalDad 2017-01-21 08:16:05

In reply to Headley

Class 3 were dominant at Gibson last year.( class 4 then ).
3,now 2 didn't do too bad either.
Wolmers ,same class have to watch.
OUR DISTANCE REALLY LOOK GOOD.

RoyalDad 2017-01-22 12:28:29

In reply to Headley

Some order forming now Headley. But, both sides didn't feature any of their big guns.

Our distance prospects look very good. Saw the twins made their presence felt, as did Darby and Rogers.

Hurdlers Pinnock and Williams romped too.

What's next? Youngster Goldsmith then Gibson?

Headley 2017-01-22 13:26:16

In reply to RoyalDad

Yes the team has good depth and the distance runners in all classes and throwers in class 1 and 2 make it look very solid.

Schedule here. Link

BTW did you see this.

Class 1 400m

1 Carpenter, Anthony .............Calabar ..............47.45
2 Morris, Dashawn .................Kingston College....48.49

Morris is back. I will be watching his and Tyreke Bryan's times very closely to see if they dip into 47s. big grin

Videos of the Double Trouble Twins. Gianni here.

Giovounni here.

RoyalDad 2017-01-22 14:04:51

In reply to Headley

Yes I saw the Carpenter / Morris result. Surprised??!!

Bryan is the better of the two I imagine so lets see when they gonna up the ante with him.+

I see too that Bann and Williams are under lock an key. Cautious? I would be.

Shamtamoi ran 2nd also, moving up in class.Have to watch for this kid Watson from Petersfield. Very good at 200,400 and 800. Remember he was DQd from the 400 last year, paving the way for Shamtamoi.

Look good.

Headley 2017-01-22 21:39:47

In reply to RoyalDad

Agree with all You;ve said above. I am feeling very positive after seeing videos from Kirkvine and McKenley Wint.

I just saw this video with Morris running 48.49 in the tight lane 1 and easing up in the last 5 metres, without any competition. I can safely say he will run under 48 by Champs.

If he can run 47.5 or faster he will be pushing Bann and Dontre. I expect Tyreke Bryan to be running as well as Morris or better. The 4x400m relay is beginning to take shape.

Jean Marc Smith who was a good 400 and 800m youth, way back in 2012 when he came 4th in the 800m, looks like he may be recovering after all these years and will be pushing the four above. He may be the man for the 400m leg on the medley relay.

RoyalDad 2017-01-25 08:36:41

In reply to Headley

Did you see the Matherson leg of the 400? Won on a canter.

Our 400 class 1 looks like it has a lot of depth. They have to figure out how to maximize using all the talent that's there to be most effective.

No Bann or Dontre. But I like that.

Anything on Yashawn Hamilton? Need him to supplement Matherson on the sprint relay.

Headley 2017-01-25 14:31:54

In reply to RoyalDad

Yes the Class 1 400m is looking deep. Matherson was looking ready.

I won't be happy though until I see all 4 or 5 of them running below 48. Our class 1 400mH looks shaky. We may be lucky to get a finalist. Steths could take 1-2 at Champs.

Our class 1 800m is the deepest I have ever seen. Christoff Darby ran 1:54 and just lost to Donkeyman on Saturday. (1:55 won at Champs last year.) Boyd and Rowe have run 1:58 already and Elliot and Brown are probably as good as Boyd and Rowe. Elliot may be better.

Then there is Buchanan who is as good as Boyd and Rowe but will run the 5K and the steeplechase, where he came 3rd and 2nd respectively last year. I expect him to be second to Rogers in the 5K and he should win the steeple this year. If Darby runs the steeple he should be 2nd this year. He was 4th last year.

I guess Bann and Dontre are under wraps. Yashawn ran 10.87 in the finals in 2016. Hope he can take it down to 10.70 this year since it is unlikely he will be doing any long junp this year.

Davion Williams looks good in first year class 2 100mH and 400mH. He has good support in both.

RoyalDad 2017-01-25 15:43:45

In reply to Headley

Davion and Pinnock class 2 solid.

Hamilton did run that 10.87. That's why we need his support for Mat and comp.Any other class 1 sprinters around? Hope they not thinking of using Bann and Dontre, as Bann was member of that crack class 3.

Grace Jackson this weekend.

Check Queens/Grace Jackson vids out on YTube.

Dontre ran 400 of 8 and stopped.

Class 3 with Stennett and co. look deadly.

Mat. is in excellent form.

Headley 2017-01-29 19:37:37

In reply to RoyalDad

The team looks good overall. Class 3 is good and very deep, no weak areas. Class 2 is ok not great. Good hurdlers, distance runners and field events but no sprinters in class 2. Class 1 has no hurdlers.

Dontre and Bann are cause for concern. We need them to fill out the 4x400m. Bann ran a good 400m at Kirkvine but nothing the last 2 weekends. I have no details but they need to work their way back. We need at least one, preferably both.

Both Bryan and Morris are showing good form in the 200m and 400m. I expect to see Morris 3 - 6 in the 400m final and Bryan 3 - 5 in the 200m final.

Headley 2017-02-01 05:00:48

Amen to that.

Is it a mistake or did Matherson run both 200 and 400?

Need to shut him down till Gibson.

Headley 2017-02-02 10:14:32

In reply to RoyalDad

Matherson, Bryan, Morris and a few others ran both the 200m and the 400m. As you realise they were not going all out. The continued improvement for Bryan and Morris is obvious. The 47 plus they ran for first and second at U20 Carifta Trials 400m last year was no fluke.

The coach believes that doing the hard work for the 400m is a big part of strengthening an athlete's core. I believe he is right and it seems to help the athletes to cope better when they transition from high school to pro.

Looking forward to the results of the Youngster Goldsmith meet on Sat. RafficShaw is doing a good job with the videos. I will send him big thanks.

Joe what is Chris Taylor up to? Is Michael Clarke delaying his entry to prepare him for a very long season?

Worthy of note.

Carey McLeod - a very quiet 7.50m in the class 1 long jump.

Petersfield is stealthily taking away some field events points the 'Calabar strong men' have grown accustomed to winning. It will become the topic of conversation soon.

Headley 2017-02-05 16:28:02

In reply to RoyalDad

Rogers is better at the longer distances from 1500m up. Nobody can touch him at 5,000m.

At Champs the boys competing against him are likely to run 800m prelims (Wed), semis (Thu) and finals (Sat) plus 1500m prelims (Thur) and finals (Fri). Last year the times in the class 1 800m semis were faster than in the finals. The schedule is brutal and should work to his advantage.

Just saw the Nikon Vision videos on YouTube showing Bann pulling up after 180m in the 400m. Not looking good for Bann and Dontre.

Pinnock well set in hurdles. Will add some spunk to relay.
Our field teams not doing too shabby either.

No Christoff/ Bann/ Dontre.
Taylor and Stephens missing from CBar.

Man,Hamilton hasn't moved forward not one bit.

Joe. Come out of semi retirement...... Need your input.

Headley 2017-02-05 18:55:34

Just saw the Nikon Vision videos on YouTube showing Bann pulling up after 180m in the 400m. Not looking good for Bann and Dontre.

Re: class 2

Our sprinters are not gonna get 1 or 2 in the 100, 200 or 400m. We may get 3rd or 4th in those races and 3rd in the 4x100m. Wolmers has 3 very good class 2 sprinters. We will do very well with Pinnock and Davion Williams in the relays.

Man,Hamilton hasn't moved forward not one bit.

He's running about the same 10.93 he ran in class 3 in 2013 behind Matherson. Last year he did the same thing all season (but in addition he was also doing well in the long jump) and pulled a 10.85 in the class 2 100m finals to grab 5th.

Under worthy of note above, I should have added Sachim Dennis of Steths - a first year class 2 boy running 10.66, six weeks before Champs.

Three years now we have waited for both Bann and Dontre to recover. Very bad development.

Rojae Fearon seems to be bouncing back from his injury. He too out several years...no??!!

Is this week Milo? Will give us a look at next years class 3 prior to Gibson.

Headley 2017-02-06 23:28:07

In reply to RoyalDad

Was hoping that they would be back to complete the quartet but it's not looking good. Fearon was obviously pleased to be back. Hope he can work to lower his time to match Bryan. Looking for big improvements from Bryan and Morris.

Another missing boy is Houston who won the class 3 hurdles two years ago. We could use his sprinting in class 2.

Milo is Saturday. The present strong class 3 needs a strong class 4 to sustain the resurgence.

All in all it's looking very positive.

Carey McLeod long jumping 7.50 m and ran 10.65 on the Sat at YGS.

RoyalDad 2017-02-08 16:04:18

In reply to Headley

I think we can upset( hopeful at best) Headley. When they beat us in Cayman, the only difference was Bloomfield. The baton change between him and Matherson got messed up and Russell caught Bryan on the line. My bad. Smalling led off. So both he and Bloomfield are now missing.

Again: Where are Taylor and Stephens?

Looking forward to Milo. We dominate every year.

In reply to JoeGrine

Because he's a long jumper?

What about Sachin Dennis?

Did you work with Mr.G at KC?

JoeGrine 2017-02-09 20:30:39

In reply to RoyalDad

Sachin Dennis looks the part and seemingly is unwilling to pay any dues to the second year C2 sprinters. In C3, last year, he was a better 200m man and was a surprise loser to Watson who was a better 400m man. This 10.66 by him is an eye-opener and now we wait to see his 200m output in 2017.

In the context of the KC/CHS showdown KC needs to locate additional sprint points which by extension speaks to the potency of their C1 4x100. So McLeod's showing is a welcomed sign for the Purples who are tired of sending Hamilton to the well only for him to return without water or bucket!

RoyalDad 2017-02-10 09:56:39

In reply to JoeGrine

So given that KC has potentially,Matherson,McLeod,Bryan...and no Hamilton,as I agree he has not resurfaced from the bottom of the bucket, who else can compliment their 4x100 team? Fearon possibly? He looked very good winning that heat of the 100.

Do you have any info on Bann and Williams? Both men had to stop short their respective races at YG and QGJ meet.

Always good to hear your comments Joe.

Thanks

I am still waiting for Archangel to give me some info on the progress of Angel from XLCR who I expect to feature 'bigly' in the 200m class 1.

Under worthy of note above, I should have added Sachim Dennis of Steths - a first year class 2 boy running 10.66, six weeks before Champs.

One of the sub-plots at the Milo tomorrow will be the form of Antonio Watson from Petersfield. He beat Sachin Dennis at Champs in the 200m last year in class 3. He could be a threat in the class 2 200m and 400m.

He was in good form at the YGS but the sub 50 time he apparently did in the class 2 400m was not recorded. He won the race to beat Bartlett of Steths and they showed Bartlet's time (who came second) but not his time. I suspect the 49.86 credited to Edwards of Munroe was actually Watson's time. He also did 11.08 in the 100m so he's in good form.

The invisible Mr. Watson

Last year he did a little shot putt for variety. big grin

JoeGrine 2017-02-10 23:18:42

In reply to Headley

Watson is a legit 400m threat and like Sachin Dennis may not wish to pay any dues to the senior C2 boys. If Petersfield have him only do the 400m it is not far fetched to see him win that crown.

RoyalDad 2017-02-11 08:40:43

In reply to Headley

Watson was DQd from the 400 paving the way for Shamtamoi. He is a legit threat and a very good talent. Will be watching him closely.

Interesting to note that Cbar will have services of both Bogle and Angus for their class 1 team. Formidable.

JoeGrine 2017-02-11 09:07:28

In reply to RoyalDad

This (Angus - the Dinthill transfer) is why McLeod's 100m showing is crucial for KC as it keeps them somewhat close to CHS in this event and in relay situations, being close has it's benefits.

I think they showed all their cards yesterday minus Taylor.Expected, their class 1 will count for most of their points.

Ever the optimist Joe.

A fit Matherson will take 100 and 200. Headley would prefer him run the 100 and not the 200. 400 runners rarely beat good sprinters.

Wolmers,JC and Petersfield will take points from both KC and Cbar. Not ruling out Steths either.

Won 4 x 4 at Milo in 3.14. Don't know who ran. Took 2nd in Medley. Relays could be big factor in who wins.

It's on at Gibson.

JoeGrine 2017-02-13 10:00:31

In reply to RoyalDad

Royal One, not only did CHS not show Taylor they also did not put together their best C1 aggregation. I ask you to note that CHS is making inroads in an area KC will need to score heavily i.e. the middle distance events.

Matherson, if fit, has to double (100/200) for KC to stand a chance.

For now, the events that could actually decide Champs are the throws!

Headley 2017-02-13 16:27:52

You mentioned CHS' beautiful hand but I see a missing finger where the class 3 should be. I am not an objective observer so I would be grateful if someone would show me who are the class 3 potential first, second or third place finishers apart from Nickolloyd Brown, Ottey and Lamb?

It may be they are being hidden until Champs. big grin

I am reluctant to see any more class 1 " inductees " into the CBar fold apart from the top four of Stevens,Taylor,Russell and Wilson. These four will be their bread and butter. Carpenter in an assist role to Taylor in 400. KC will not win this race, but will counter with Bryan and Morris.

Matherson should derail the 1-2 of Stevens and Russell in 100, likewise in the 200.Do we see McLeod or Fearon picking up a couple points here?

4x100,I will not " fall " so easily as McLeod and a " rejuvenated " Fearon will make things interesting.

Barring any missteps, Taylor and Matherson will obviously be the difference makers in the 4x400.I could be going out on a limb here, but Mat is going gangbusters..

At 800,1500 and longer,KC will dominate in class 1,Darby etc.Re. Milo where we crushed STETHS in 4x800 and 4x400.

As for the throws,CBar has always been good here. I will not speculate.

I am waiting for an objective person to identify the strength of the CHS class 3. I would prefer to know now rather than on Champs Saturday. big grin

Speaking of Champs Sat, miracles happen frequently but so far the throwers seem to be from Petersfield with minor players from the usual schools.

In case you did not notice we had two 4x800 squads at the Milo. It means we will not lose the medley because of a bad 800m leg this year.

St. Jago's Lawrence, Clarke and Jean-Pierre wants me to pass on "hello" to you. They have a pretty strong hand in the C1 800m and Medley open. In addition to two from the listed three from St. Jago, Darby will also have to fight 2 from Steths and one from CHS and Spot Valley in that 800m.

For the man saying KC "will not lose the medley because of a bad 800m leg" big grin I agree with his astute statement, the loss will be inflicted by a team with a better 800m man.

Headley 2017-02-14 15:02:16

In reply to JoeGrine

The class 1 800m will be a fight and at the end of the fight may the best man win. I expect KC to have two finalists in all races 800m and longer in class 1 and one of those finalists could be at the top of the podium for the 800, 1500, steeple and 5,000 depending on what Mr. Jauvaney James decides to do.

Context
So far none of these guys have gone south of 1:53. An U18 youth from Bim went under 1:50 at Carifta in 2016 so these guys (except maybe Kenan who is first year class 1) are not tigers.

To my chagrin,I failed to recognize the talented Jago individuals you mentioned. However,Darby,Rogers and Buchanan will more than suffice for our domination of the medley event. Noteworthy recognition for my fellow Fortis Headley's astute prediction. We are that deep in the event.

I look forward to Taylor's introduction this year by his coach who has him locked down.

Headley 2017-02-14 15:30:08

I hope SportsMax or 1Spot Media will bring the Carifta Trials on Mar 4, because that will be the first real match where the guys will need to run flat out.

JoeGrine 2017-02-15 08:21:01

All three St. Jago boys can go 1500m in addition to the 800m. KC's challenge is finding a 400m leg to run the medley whilst trying to win a winnable 4x400. As of today, St. Jago starts overwhelming favorites for the medley and could shatter the record. Please be reminded (Mr. Headley) that Anthony Cox can also do the medley 800m or 400m segment for St. Jago.

KC distance runners (Royal One)are finals worthy with medal winning potential, however, do not discount St. Jago or to a lesser extent St.ETHS. CHS will also take a nibble here so I maintain the battle will be won in the field events and North Street may want to send a "thank you" to Petersfield when all is said and done.

Headley 2017-02-15 18:34:26

In reply to JoeGrine

Mr. Buchanan says there will be no 'nibbling' in the steeple and the 5k. The 1500m and the 800m will be hard fought - Darby is ready, Elliot too. Yes Jago will have a very good medley team. More can be said as the likely composition of the medley squads becomes clear.

The 800m runner on this STETHS medley team is unlikely to be at Champs. big grin

Please help me with the CHS class 3 project.

My understanding is that Matherson blazed STETHS at Milo over the weekend on his leg of the medley giving KC the win. He will be allowed to run the medley 400 if needed. Then there are Bryan and Morris...two vital members of the troop who I would rather have than anyone from Jago or STETHS. The word is that J James could not make up the stagger on Darby after that Matherson gallop. Do I hear the name D Williams crying out for some recognition here? Could be our surprise weapon.

Petersfield seem to have a solid collection of talent just waiting to upset the applecart.

When all is said and done, North Street will rejoice.

Be rminded that if you do the Medley Relays you can only do field events with it so Matherson will not be doing the medley rather the 100/200 and both relays. Chances are you meant 4x400 rather than medley in your statement.

800, 1500, steeple, 5000
KC will in all likelihood win the 5000, the other events will be a dogfight. StETHS, with talented Holmwood import Butler, will be playing spoiler in the middle distances whereas St. Jago will not be playing.

Did Rhoden run away from Butler after he claimed “he was being battered on his elbow by the STETHS runner”? I am speculating, but if Rhoden who is a class 2 boy could beat him he may not be so hot.

I am pleasantly surprised that KC could find 4 class 2 athletes who could win a 4x200m relay.

1) 400m - must be done by a C1 athlete
2) 200m - must be done by a C2 athlete
3) 200m - must be done by a C2 athlete
4) 800m - must be done by a C1 athlete

Athletes participating in the sprint medley cannot participate in any other track event, however, they can do field events.

Headley 2017-02-18 09:28:51

Can Jauavney James do serious damage to the 49.01 Champs record left by Hyde? I am waiting to see. Has he cleaned up his technique? Unlike Hyde who started what used to be the 400m open hurdles in class 1, James started since he was in class 2 (was he unique?).

He has the strength but the question marks relate to his technique and his speed? Even without the best speed if he could improve his technique he could be a good world class prospect. I doubt he could be world class at the 800m or 1500m, but I am not betting against Mr. James.

So far his approach has been to carefully negotiate the first nine hurdles and finish like a train over the last one overtaking the opposition to the line. So far it's worked but Barrett and Francis are now older, wiser and hopefully much faster.

RoyalDad, we have Hamilton (imported from CBar). He has a lot of work to do but he seems like an aggressive youth who wants to prove a point.

Would you run both this Saturday at Gibson,or let them train up to champs? We seem to have runners coming out of every corner of the school.!!

Who is this Elliott who beat Darby by nuff lengths?

I imagine if they both make it to champs,it will be on a restricted basis depending on fitness. Dontre did a 50 sec. 400 winning his heat. Do you think some games manship is being deployed here by KC with regards to both.? Coach could be making it seem what it isn't. After all, 2 years now with both injured.

What is the real story with both??!!

Your comment on Ashley is well noted. Joe had her pegged as the next 400 meter prospect. Joe???

And as for Gayon Evans. Wow! Another pocket rocket.!!

JoeGrine 2017-02-20 09:05:41

Can the KC brain trust be relied on to make sane decisions? Last season (or the season before) the world knew Bann was coming off an injury so he shows up at Gibson and what is his first event at the Gibson Relays, anchor leg of the 4x100. How can you have a quarter miler coming off an injury doing a sprint relay?

I think Williams is at GC.

RoyalDad 2017-02-20 12:28:13

In reply to JoeGrine

As you know, he pulled up trying to catch the CBar quartet at Gibson 3 years ago. Absolutely no need to run Bann or Wiliams here, also Matherson,Pinnock,Stennett

KCs 4 at the time were Bann,Matherson,Williams and Wellington.

They simply cannot make the same mistake again. Coach will be fired if this repeats.

Headley 2017-02-20 19:02:49

Where did you see the race? Send me a link please. I have seen no races from Milo.

I've been mentioning Elliot and Darby since I raised the topic of our sudden and as far as I know unprecedented strength and depth in 800m runners.

I would keep running Bann and Dontre in individual 400m races. It seems that is what the coach is doing. I assume they are presently fit, but coming off a long injury can play games with your mind.

It was not Bann who pulled up at Gibson last year running the anchor on the 4x100. It was Dontre Williams. The foursome that was running the relay (including Dontre) were the same foursome who were running together for years. It was sad but it was probably best to find out early. You know what they say about hindsight.

Dontre it was, this was not hindsight, I said it from I saw the lineup that they were playing with the proverbial fire. A very cautious race. Notice how slowly he started. He will have to continue in the same vein and not rush the preparation.

Note I said 3 years ago. This was not Milo. Like you, I have not seen any races from Milo this year. Shame.

With Bann and Williams, let me just echo what both you and Joe stated. KCs management must put best options together and don't be over zealous with either. Continue to carefully plot their course and stay away from those darn sprints.

Any telecast for Gibson this Saturday???

No 4x800m at Champs. You have to wait and see what athletes are participating before you can draw any conclusions. Lots of chess games being played.

I am not aware there will be any telecast. I think they are missing a beat. Even a pay per view could make money. I will raise it with one of the organisers.

This year will be different at Champs. I am predicting there will be few easy participation points for the big schools (Cbar, KC, JC) in the track events. Wolmers, XLCR, Monroe, Cornwall, Petersfield, Bridgeport, Vere, Rusea's even Spot Valley will be mopping up many of the easy 3rd, 4th, 5th etc points that some big schools usually collect.

JoeGrine 2017-02-22 07:57:34

1) Gibson is usually carried by CVM and can even be seen in the diaspora

2) No StETHS at Gibson this year, not surprised as their program has plummeted. They won the boy's section at Western Champs by sheer volume and lost the girls section. Is Coach Walcott's foray into professional track having a negative effect?

3) If KC allow the recently promoted to Class 1 CHS sprint/hurdles stars to run rampant then Champs will be a repeat of 2016. 100m CHS (Stephens, Angus, Russell, Wilson, Anderson, Bogle) 200m (Angus, Stephens, Anderson, Bogle 400m (Carpenter, Francis, Heath) 110mH (Russell,Campbell) 400mH (Francis,Dixon, James-King). From the look of things, Christopher Taylor will not be needed at Champs, THAT could concern the KC supporters!
I repeat my mantra, it is the field events that KC will have to resort to if the plan is to recapture the Mortimer-Geddes trophy.

When your star runner is having problems it can make a big difference to the team. As you noted the Western Champs which has prelims and semis was no cakewalk for STETHS. After a tough week it seems a good decision to rest and recoup.

After listing the class 1 races all 400m or shorter you make a conclusion about the whole of Champs.

I sense a little disproportionality there.

At Champs Matherson, Bryan and Morris will take a chunk out of the races you listed. Then there are 4 races 800m or longer in class 1. I expect the points differential CHS gains below 800m to be negated by Matherson, Bryan and Morris and the points differential KC gains from 800m to 5000m.

Au contraire my friend! Remember now, the cry has always been that the CHS nightmare squad (Wilson, Stephens, Russell and Taylor) from C3 onwards was supposed to meet it "Waterloo" in 1st year C1, well, we are now at 1st year C1 for this lot and what do we see here? They will still score heavily and Matherson winning the double and Bryan and Morris scoring 400m points are not enough to hedge one's sprint predictions.

I already spoke of the distance races and pointed out that St. Jago in C1 and CHS and other schools in the lower classes will prevent KC from getting the needed cushion for victory.

In Class 2 it is CHS that has the better sprinters (Young/Stewart), however, Williams, Pinnock and Rogers will be a force. KC needs to win C2 by a large margin.

In Class 3 Stenneth must win the sprint double, Roberts (CHS) may want a double of his own.

Which brings me back to the................Field Events.

A short response is best.

Look up Gianni and Jouvouni Henry in class 3. I would be very disappointed if KC did not have two representatives in every class 3 final. One of those finalists should be first or second in every class 3 race.

My comment on the 'Petersfield Effect' on CHS usual area of strength was made 2 weeks ago.

I think KC will dent the vaunted quartet to some degree. They have to run Taylor.

In class 1 100/200 KC will win. The spoils will be determined by where Bryan/ co finishes in relation to Russell/ Stevens ( 100 ) and Taylor/ Wilson( 200 ). I assume they will use Wilson for 200.Here ( class 1 ) we also have a wealth of talent who will give us points even with the added known challenges coming from Jago,STETHS,Wolmers,JC.

Our overall Class 2 is deeper than theirs so we may not have to run away with the points in that class.

Class 3 as Headley points out could be Cbars Waterloo.

Understand our field athletes are " very competent" this year.

JoeGrine 2017-02-22 19:06:49

In reply to RoyalDad

If you and Headley think CHS will meet their Waterloo in C3 then you gentlemen are sadly mistaken. KC 1st or 2nd in every C3 race is pipe dream. big grin

I repeat, it is the Field Events that will make the positive difference for KC not C3.

Royal One can you show me your basis for saying "Our overall Class 2 is deeper than theirs"

Just quoting your statement that KC class 2 will be a force. Did Shamtamoi Brown move to class 2 this year? If he did, then we can add him to the list.

I may want to really commit to your point of view regarding the field events, which may determine the outcome. But I strongly believe that KC has the overall better team this year to deal with our rival Cbar.not withstanding their vaunted class 1 .

Like you,my concern will be that their brain trust wisely utilize their athletes to maximize points to be most effective.

Now Joe,a pipe dream can also welcome the return of both Bann and Dontre. If both athletes return fit, Cbar has no chance of winning. I repeat...none.

JoeGrine 2017-02-23 06:43:25

In reply to RoyalDad

The return to full fitness of Bann/Williams:

400m - KC gets two athletes in the top 6. Without Bann/Williams they will still have two athletes in the top 8. Point differential = minimal
4x400 - KC wins the 4x400. Without them at worse second. Points differential = minimal

Shantamoi Brown is 1st year C2, he will have to contend with Watson (who would have beaten him in C3 last year) plus Watson's teammate Taylor, Robertson (JC), Simpson (Manchester) and Evans (StATHS) and note CHS may medal here.

KC has not done enough work to stop the CHS nightmare squad (Wilson, Stephens, Russell and Taylor) and I have already showed you where Christopher Taylor does not need to show up at Champs and CHS will still pile up the C1 points by outscoring KC in the 100m/200m/400m/110H. That is a telling blow to KC's chance of winning Champs by counting on C1 track points.

Williams (110mH/400mH), Pinnock (110mH), Lowe (jumps), Rogers (800/1500) must score heavily, in fact KC has to win all the events listed (800m questionable Farquhason (CHS) will be tough).

It is the Field Events!

Joe

As of now I will concede the 400 and 110H.

The 110H will be our least productive Every other race KC and CBar will probably be minimal differential as you state. I Agree here.

What about races over 400 meters? KC surely has the dominant team going longer, so we will compensate for the loss points in the sprints, and then some.Darby,Elliott,Buchanan will more than recoup the points lost in the shorter races. So,I'm not concerned here. The big factor for me here is that finally KC can compete with the " awesome" four. At least curtail them somewhat. Yes,and I know the longer races will be more competitive based off of James and co. Jago etc.

One more day till Gibson. Coaches are going to hold their charges and not let them run for fear of injury. STETHS...

Headley 2017-02-23 20:46:49

Morris vs Carpenter

The video above is from CARIFTA TRIALS 2016 when Morris took it to Carpenter in the U18 400m. Taylor decided not to run that day. I believe the rain was a factor. Both Morris and Bryan ran 47 plus that day. The comments from the KC video posse are R rated but almost as good as the race.

If I were Bryan's coach I would have stern words with him if anyone who is not a serious 200m runner comes off the curve close to him. With Bryan's 200m speed he should be way ahead of the likes of Carpenter coming off the curve. Even Morris who does not have his 200m speed gets to the curve ahead of him.

I am sure his coach must have tried but the youth is either not strong enough to close out the last 100m or too cautious by nature.

KC may have a better team than CHS in C1 going 800, 1500, steeple + 5000, however, can you show me with St. Jago, CHS, JC, StETHS, Rusea and Spot Valley around just how KC will dominate enough to secure the points to pad a lead on CHS?

One more day till Gibson. Coaches are going to hold their charges and not let them run for fear of injury

Gibson wont reveal much as gone are the days when this meet was reverenced by coaches. StETHS will be a no-show and KC in recent times has not showed up for some events at what is essentially their "home" meet. CHS on occasions have hid their hand at this event luring KC into a false sense of security.

So true, however, KC has the ability to win the Field Events points allocation is each class, however, by sheer volume, CHS will be there so KC has to win where they are favored, the margin of error is that thin.

Mr. Rudishia (Leon Clarke of St. Jago) seems to be in very good shape at the moment. Nice Jago distance squad as expected and touted by Joe. Did not see Darby or Elliott but Darby's leg was in 'kenesio' tape when he ran at Issac Henry so I was not surprised.

I was between Florida and Bim yesterday but saw most of the races after the 4x100ms and the videos of the earlier races. Was impressed by the Fortis especially classes 3 and 4.

Archangel will be very pleased with the promise from Aggie. The Riley team working miracles. Wolmers did not show me as much as I expected in class 2.

PROFESSIONALS/COLLEGIATES
1) Blake will be a major factor come June - August.
2) Rasheed Dwyer looked a shadow of his 2014 self.
3) Gayon Evans is still In early season shape, she ran a very good lead-off. Sashalee Forbes also looked decent.
4) There are no 400m individual male star, however, collectively the nation is well served.
5) Welcome back Martin Manley.
5) Early days yet with June onwards being the business end of things

GIRLS
1) Whoever (Steele???) ran the anchor leg for Holmwood C3 girls 4x100 is my girl athlete of the day.
2) Edwin Allen C3 girls running 44.91???? They need to check that time again as it was mind blowing, easily the performance of the meet. The first C3 girls 4x100 to go sub 45.00. How good were they? They would have finished 6th in the boy's equivalent.
3) Anderson of Vere is...SPECIAL
4) Impressive running by the top three in the 4x800
5) Kimone Shaw where art thou?
6) Edwin Allen will win Champs
7) I like Kimoria Mushett who ran the open 400m

BOYS
1) KC came ready for this year's Gibson Relays
2) CHS has work to do
3) St. Jago ran the 2nd fastest time ever by a Jamaican high school 4x800 team without their third best 800m man!!!
4) McLeod of KC will be huge for them come Champs
5) KC are well served in the sprints in C3&4, it bodes well for them in seasons to come
6) KC's C2 4x100 will go 40.4 if they can fix their exchanges
7) Stenneth looks good for the C3 double though he could end up doing just the 100m (such depth)
cool Kerr is of one the best sprint talent I have seen come out of KC. He needs the "kid glove" treatment!
9) 4x400 intelligent running by the KC quartet, how about St. Jago with Clarke on anchor who along with Cox ran on the 4x800 earlier.
10) CHS did not reveal all their cards but take nothing away from KC who has shown clearly that Champs is a serious two horse race!

Cox, McKenzie, Lawrence and Clarke ran the 4x800 for St. Jago. Jean-Pierre their 1:53.0 man did not run. The high school record of StETHS is in danger.

Johnson/Kerr will probably do the 200m for KC in C3.

RoyalDad 2017-02-26 09:36:16

Yes. He is a special talent. Was hooked on the relays all day. Nice job by Sportsmax.

The 4x800 KC ended up down the track after being in contention the 1st two legs.

Again, the CBar contingent not showing their full deck.Is it a wise move?

Our class 3 and 4 look very good.Couldn't be happier. Class 2 was a bang up Fortis win.Brought the house down. However,CBar have 2 very good class 2 runners waiting in the wings. Careful.

Class 1 did what they had to do.39.90 is no joke. McLeod very impressive Flashbacks though of Russell blowing past Bryan at Cayman invitational after getting the baton ahead.

4x400 also impressive. Again CBar had no one here. Carpenter,Heath,Taylor missing. Final time 3.12 had CBar 50 meters behind in 3.17.Champs will be different of course.

This class 4 kid Kerr or Carr. Very talented. Much to look forward Headley.

Very good analysis Joe.
Blake is back.
Skean ran 6.60 for 2nd.Chambers ran 6.70 for 5th.SEC meet indoor.
Minzie I need to see more. Hope he moved forward off of last year.
Francis only 400 quality at meet. However,Bloomfield ran 45.43 indoor for second at SEC. Same meet as Skean and Chambers.

Have to think Gayon is moving forward. She is a nice surprise so early. Forbes could move forward also. Will be watching.

Edwin look unbeatable. Agree.
Kimone has regressed badly Joe. Such weight!!

Very pleased with KCs overall performance. And agree again, another 2 horse race.

JoeGrine 2017-02-26 11:44:35

In reply to RoyalDad

1) Bloomfield's time was on an oversized track but still a very decent run. I would pencil him and Francis in for 400m slots to London providing he can handle the rounds.

2) Gayon had raced a lot so far, will it catch up with her later in the season?

3) I was never high on Kimone Shaw, preferred English who can be one of Jamaica's best 400m runner!

4) KC's 4x800 the 3rd leg (I think) runner fell, not that it would have made a difference to St. Jago winning, however, they would have been close to or ahead of JC.

5) CHS did not show their true colors, more will unfold between Corporate Champs and Carifta Trials.

Headley 2017-02-26 11:53:18

In reply to RoyalDad

Again CBar had no one here. Carpenter,Heath,Taylor missing.

I believe Heath ran the first leg and Carpenter the last leg. Don't know if Francis ran but the third leg was poor and Carpenter got the baton with a lot of work to do. He ran 250 and jogged the rest.

Taylor is so good that he will make this ordinary looking squad into a good relay team that's hard to beat.

JoeGrine 2017-02-26 13:01:46

In reply to Headley

Apart from his shock C2 400m run Heath has been ordinary at best. Like you I agree that Taylor makes a massive difference and now CHS will definitely have to roll him out for Champs.

I still have CHS winning the 4x400 in my prediction but just.

Headley 2017-02-26 15:22:05

In reply to JoeGrine

Once Taylor runs it's likely to be a CHS win because he's 2 seconds faster than his nearest rival. That's about a 16m - 17m lead he can make-up on a runner capable of doing 47 secs or a 21m lead on Morris who is a 47.6 man.

I am predicting that Antonia Watson will run under 47 at champs, depending on his workload. His finish was extraordinarily strong. It tells me he could go out harder.

He started behind Bryan, had to go wide on the straight to pass 3 runners and finish in lane 3. In spite of all of that he was able to just beat Bryan to the line. He must have 46 plus capability. The commentators are suggesting Javon Powell of Edwin is the class 2 400m favourite, but I have been impressed by Watson since class 4. He will not be beaten easily.

RoyalDad 2017-02-26 15:39:40

In reply to Headley

So on we go Headley. Do you think they will use Matherson in the 4x400 to boost chances in view off Taylor's imminent intro come champs?? They used him back at Milo I believe. There they ran 3.14. Don't know who the squad was then. Will we also have a surprise in the wings in the 4x4. Two can play this game. At best, Taylor makes up 30 meters ( 3 sec ). Race will be the one for the meet. Agree whole heartedly with Joe.

Joe mentioned Kerr of KC. Is he the one on the backstretch class 4 4x100, and the finisher class 4 4x200?Very smooth. Tilts his head to the right somewhat when he runs.

Headley 2017-02-26 17:06:32

In reply to RoyalDad

I doubt KC will use Matherson on the 4x400m. We have been careful not to overwork our athletes during the past 5 years and when it's an athlete who's been injured and he's potential world class the caution will be even stronger.

I expect that Bann or Dontre might be able to run 48.00 by Champs and that would guarantee us second if Taylor is there. I think we can work with that.

Yes Kerr was the finisher in the class 4 4x200 for sure and I believe on the backstretch class 4 4x100. Yes very smooth with a slight head tilt. He can run 100m to 400m. May be our 2nd or 3rd fastest 400m runner in class 3.

It is possible that Kerr may run the 100m or 200m. The guys who are faster (and have other assignments) I believe are Scott Mc Leod and Bowaghie. Both of them are expected to do the long jump and Mc Leod is our best high jumper.

JoeGrine 2017-02-26 18:28:17

In reply to Headley

Watson split roughly 47.4 and Powell (in traffic) around 48.1, take that for what it's worth. Who wins the C2 400m depends on who has the less workload I am leaning on Powell's management having him just run the 400m. Watson's problem is that he has a shot at winning the 200m also.

Brown will have to decide football or track if he wants to run with these two fine runners.

Explain how deep our class 3 is please.Stennett,McLeod and Bowaghie. Anybody for 400?

Headley 2017-02-27 20:12:07

In reply to RoyalDad

Not sure who they will use for qualifying apart from Feron. Hamilton is trying his best. I give him a of credit. Not a deep class 1 sprinters' bench and Matherson, Bryan and McLeod will be very busy.

Seems that Bjorn Clarke, Rayon Campbell and Kavaughn Goldson are our three fastest in class 3. Kerr who is class 4 could be as fast as any of the 3. Mc Leod who is our best high jumper and one of our two best long jumpers may actually be the fastest. Jovani Clark who ran the second leg on the 4x100m relay (with long sleeves) is probably the next fastest after the guys named.

This may be our most difficult class 3 race. The competition will be strong from Raheim Scott of Rusea's, Tajay Gardener of Munroe and Tajay Roberts of Calabar. But Bjorn Clarke seems to be getting better as the season goes on. Rayon Campbell and Goldson both tend to go out slowly and finish strongly.

Our class 3 is so strong that the guys who run the 400m will not run the 800m and should be very fresh. I believe all/most of the others will be doubling at 400m and 800m. All of these guys are running 51 plus now but the winner at Champs will run 49 plus.

Joe seems to think it will boil down to the field events.

Cbar has not shown their full deck. Taylor,Stevens and Russell have been missing. Wilson I'm not worried about.
How to you analyze their absence?

Predictions work better as one gets closer to the event. I will make a prediction about a week before Champs when almost all the cards are on the table and I am closer to the action in Ja.

KC's position is looking good and if either or both Bann and Dontre can give us a good relay leg it would be even better. Carifta Trials this weekend should force some contenders to put out their best or close to their best in some cases. It may also shed light on fitness concerns.

Headley 2017-03-01 08:18:45

Carpenter ran 47.6 to come second to Taylor in class 2 at Champs 2015. He ran 49.5 to come fifth in class 1 in 2016. Brandon Heat ran 48.03 to come second to Taylor in class 2 in 2016. If memory serves me right he was second to Taylor in 2014 in second year class 3. So Heath and Carpenter have been taking turns to come second to Taylor since 2014. Akeeme Francis came third in class 1 (to my surprise) in 2016 running 47.6.

None of these guys have looked capable of running under 47.6 since the start of the 2017 season. Carpenter had one outing about 5 weeks ago where he did around 47.7. I am looking forward with a lot of interest to see how they all finish the season and partner Taylor on the 4x400m.

Unlike you, I will go out on a limb and say Fortis this year. I believe we have countered their every move this year, hiding and all.
And our field athletes are favourites in several events. Just need the quantity to back it up.

As you state though,Carifta this weekend. We should see clearer.

Dontre and Bann, our sleepers. Can you imagine!!!

In reply to RoyalDad

Was listening to Oral Tracy and crew on HITZ this morning. Tracy is saying Fortis is the favourite and most of the crew and callers seem to agree. Time will tell.

One name I forgot is Keneil Dewar, who is another class 1 middle distance runner. He must have been injured because between McKinley/Wint and Gibson/McCook I did not hear about him. Will see what he brings this weekend.

BTW the KC 4x400m at Gibson was Smith, Bryan, Marshall and Morris.

RoyalDad 2017-03-02 14:59:12

In reply to Headley

Track Alerts had preview some weeks ago, and they too had Fortis as favourites.

That 4x400,apart from Morris and Bryan, looks weak on paper, but they did a fine job at Gibson.

Brain trust just have to put athletes in events to maximize points across board. Cant fail this year.

I remember back in the day when CBar took it from us we marched to stadium on the Friday, and unfortunately lost again. Devastating.

That's when we had Dennis 'Jahman" Henry, Stapleton,Bally Reid an co.

Stapleton took out Cameron in the final? Or was it Oliver Heywood from Clarendon? Jahman had run 2nd to him I believe the previous year. Henry was heavily bandaged though.

JoeGrine 2017-03-03 14:37:46

Samuels - the best natural talent prior to Bolt.

Pusey - did not have "next level" pure speed, however, she did well at 400m, if she had focused more on the one lap she could have run consistent 50point

Headley 2017-03-03 14:47:21

The champion schools in both sections will pocket $250,000 with $100,000 for the runners-up and $50,000 for the third-placed teams.Meanwhile, of the over 15 records broken, five were registered in the mouth-watering Digicel Grand Prix events, chief among them an impressive 1:52.92-minute-clocking by Calabar’s Kimar Farquharson in the boys’ Class Two 800 metres.

Very impressed with Farquharson going sub 1:53. (See my comments about class 1 boys running above 1:53 in thread above). The battle (part 2) between this young man and Rodgers in the 800m will be fierce. I expect the class two time to be faster than the class 1. Would not surprise me if Farquharson wins the 800m and Rodgers takes the 1500m.

Also impressed with these class 2 jumpers going over 7m.
Shaquille Lowe leapt to an eye-popping 7.05m. Lowe erased the previous mark of 6.78m held by Joel Morgan in securing victory ahead of teammate Wayne Pinnock (7.03m) and Tyrell Johnson (6.57m) of Calabar.

Is there a reason KC would run Rodgers 800/1500 instead of 1500/5000?

Headley 2017-03-03 18:18:24

In reply to JoeGrine

Very good reasons. KC does not have a second 800m runner in class 2 who can make the finals to join Rhoden. If Rogers runs the 800m class 2 he will be first or second.

KC does not really need him in the 5,000m since Buchannan and Darby/Elliot/Brown/Dewar will be two in the finals and likely first and 3/4/5/6.

In addition by putting Rodgers in the class 2 800m it avoids a CBAR 1-2 and reduces the points available to CBAR. CBAR has no credible 5,000m runner as far as I am aware.

I like our field athletes. All classes doing great. Zico Campbell...too bad he wont compete this year. Hope that statement is correct. I believe he is a transfer.

Your comment about running Rogers in class 2 800 makes sense. We have to break up the potential 1-2. Wealth of depth in 5000.

YouTube posted some events from meet. Maybe more to come.

Carifta on today.

Headley 2017-03-04 12:01:43

In reply to RoyalDad

I saw Rafficshaw posted some 1500m races from the Digicel Corprate Area Meet. Zico sat out a year last year. This is his second year at KC.

Yes long jumpers jumping like crazy.

Scott Mc Leod in class 3 jumped 6.22m on Thursday. I am sure it's his longest by far. Only Brown of CBAR who has been jumping 6.3-6.4 all season is ahead of him. He is also the best high jumper in class 3.

Lowe AND Pinnock in class 2 jumped over 7m on Thursday.

Carey Mc Leod in class 1 jumped over 7.3 too and by his standard that was a bad jump.

Good performances to win the 800m and 1500m in all classes except the class 2 800m where Farquharson won in a blistering sub 1:53 and Rodgers took second.

All class 3 races looking good. The 400m is a little shaky because Mc Leod is jumping and Kerr will probably run the 200m (as a first year class 3 he can do only one event and a relay). Campbell and Clarke are doing ok but the competition will be stiff.

BTW ignore the time from the class 3 400m on Thursday. It was fast but it did not look like a 48.3.

U20 100m with Matherson.

U20 400m with Taylor.

Sub-1:53 is becoming the norm as it should be. New benchmark must be sub-1:51.

An impressive 1:51.11-clocking by Spot Valley High's Tyrese Reid in the boys Under-18 800m capped off day one of the JAAA Carifta Trials at the National Stadium on Saturday.

Reid's time came against a quality field and is the fastest in the country to the event so far this season.

Kingston College's Kimar Farquaharson also achieved a personal best of 1:52.04 for second with Dugion Blackman (1:53.34) of Jamaica College third.

There was also some excitement in the boys' Under-20 event won by Ackeen Colley (1:52.11) of Rusea's High ahead of Agerian Jackson (1:52.31) of Christiana High and the fast finishing Colin Rowe (1:52.56) of Kingston College.

That was funny with the KC/ Cbar swith.

MAtherson laid it down boss. Not extended. Good sign.

Morris did a 46.95??!!! Liked how he finished up. Strong all the way through.

Wilson looked impressive also. Where does that put Russell and Stevens?

Those 800 meter times are encouraging. Hope we can continue the trend and keep it.

Headley 2017-03-05 08:33:30

In reply to RoyalDad

Yes Fortis, Matherson and Taylor looked good but Morris was the man who took my interest. Peeps may not know this, but two years ago when Taylor who was in lane 3 or 4 in the 400m heats passed Morris who was in lane 8 before the 200m start point, Morris faded and did not finish the race. To see his progress last year and continuing progress to become a decent 400m runner this year gives me great satisfaction. If his action could be cleaned-up he could take off another second.

If I were the KC coach I would consider running Matherson only in the 100m, the 4x100m AND the first leg of the 4x400m relay (only in the final) as a means of reducing his workload and spreading it out over the 3 days. The 200m prelims start on Wed and the 100m prelims on Thu.

By doing only the 100m he would have 3 days of light work, instead of 4 days of much harder work. He would also give KC a flying start and get us out of the congested traffic at the change overs. He could also give Morris a lead to work with.

Jauavaney Jamaes was missing yesterday. Wonder if he is ok. Barrett did a decent time.

The improved 800m, 1,500m AND 5,000m times indicate better athletes are being forced to run longer distances as the shorter distances become ultra competitive. It could also be the opportunity to run on good surfaces earlier in the season.

Headley 2017-03-05 19:20:27

In reply to RoyalDad

I must look for the video. I did read the result last night but I was busy today.

Just saw these on Trackakerts.

Taylor ran 45.51secs to win the Under-20 boys’ 400m final. The mark is second best time in the world this year behind Botswana’s Karabo Sibanda, 45.26.

Dashawn Morris of Kingston College (KC) was second to Calabar’s Taylor in a persona best 46.67.

Antonio Watson of Petersfield won the Under-18 boys’ final in 47.08 ahead of Ramone Lindo of Vere 47.18.

Good run by Morris I was not expecting him to go below 47. With that finish he can run a more even race and get a better time. In class 2 I see Watson running some Taylor-like times. By next year he could be looking to break Taylor's class 2 record. I did predict from Gibson that Watson would go below 47 at Champs. Ramone Lindo took second. That's a surprise. I was expecting Anthony Cox or Juvaughn Powell to take second. Cox ran the 800m and the 400m heats yesterday. Why would a coach do that to an U18 youth?

Russell, one of Calabar’s top Class 1 athletes, won the obstacle final in 13.31 ahead of Wayne Pinnock of KC 13.71.

I believe the U18 110m hurdles are higher than the class 2 hurdles so that was a great run by Pinnock.

RoyalDad 2017-03-06 16:04:17

In reply to Headley

Watson was simply outstanding with that late burst. The 2nd and 3rd finishers were also good. Boy, Watson is special.

Morris is improving steadily. Like his finish. Should have double trouble for class 1 with Bryan who won 200 final or however they are utilized.

Pinnock.Beautiful effort. Did we have a 3rd place finish in same race?

Headley 2017-03-06 19:24:02

In reply to RoyalDad

Antonio Watson, Antonio Watson, Antonio Watson! big grin Yes the top 3 finishers were good. 400m running is in good hands.

Morris' finish was amazing. Tells me he can run faster.

Pinnock ran a very good race. Bernard of JC third. Cargill of KC false started. What was not well publicized was that Pinnock also won the long junp with an amazing jump of 7.25m. I am sure this is his first year of doing the long jump.

Is the new track already paying dividends?

Boys - KC
Girls - Edwin Allen

Headley 2017-03-08 07:05:41

In reply to Phillip-3

I hope you are right, but KC will have to take it. CHS will not give it up easily. The KC individual performances are very encouraging, but what has me excited this year is the KC class 3 and the depth of the team.

BTW For those folks who follow Ja/Carifta T&F closely check this result from yesterdays Digicel Central Meet.

In the Class Two 1500, Edwin Allen's outstanding Cemore Donald won in 4:40.84 ahead of teammate Kayann Green, 4:43.58 with third going to Holmwood's Brittney Campbell in 4:45.67.

Brittney Campbell and the Holmwood massive will be in deep distress. Losing to Donald is one thing but losing to Green is a horse of a different colour. After last year's promise this has been a tough year for Campbell who was also third behind Donald and Foote in her U18 girls 800m Carifta Trials run.

Easy one first. Rogers should run because it's SCHOOL athletics, believe it or not. big grin

Bann ran a test race and did a decent 50 plus at Gibson. I don't know if he exerts himself whether he will be ok but if he is ok he prolly can do 48 plus by Champs.

He will not run an individual 400m so the question is whether he can/should do a leg on the relay. KC has Marshall and Smith who can run around the same 48 plus to accompany Bryan and Morris. There is also Romel Plummer (third behind Taylor and Heath last year in 48.43) who has not run in the past 3 weeks and could pull a surprise. Matherson on the first leg would be even better.

You may have to add a asterisk to your preview as Rogers is a very hot topic now. Extenuating circumstances lead to his registration. KC may or may not have max points 1500 and 5000 depending on what happens.

As a person who used to be a track and field official at these meets, I can say that 'big' schools, including the two in question here, get a lot of discretionary decisions.

It was ill advised to make a big issue about this but it does point to the vulnerability of Calabar as to their chances in this year's Champs. They showed their hand. For the sake of competition I hope this has not distracted the athletes because I see this a very close fight.

In my humble opinion ... and with no school bias methinks Dr. Small's explanations give good grounds for letting the youngster participate - whether is KC ,C'Bar, CC, JC, STGC or no rass C.

Mi see some comments on FB around this issue that are so very explicitly PARTISAN dem not funny. Champs is champs and for years there have been compromises given as needed, and warranted by ISSA. Now mi does know that ISSA has had issues over the years ... but mi haffi gi dem dis one. Tht fellah was in "limbo" and couldah did get lost or worst - detained, captured, ICEd by the Trumpists!! Good ting him neva pass US side!!
cool cool

Yes man, wherever Jcans are, there will be ackee. This morning in Florida I was picking ackees. big grin

I will be in Ja on Sunday and yuh know is more ackees, maybe even bammy and fish. One of the best kept secrets in Ja is the quality of the food and the attractive prices in St. Thomas and the Portland - St. Thomas border.

There is a place two miles before Morant Bay on the coast named White Horses - famous for fruits, including naseberries (sapodillas for Trinis, Grenadians and Lucians and Doms). The surfer dude who used to be at Copacabana near 11 miles has opened a place there called Longboarders, about two years now. The food is very good at local prices. Meals are around US 15.

Hope it does not become too popular. The good news is that it is out of the tourism mainstream.

Nuh mind the CBar stunt. It is still High School athletics, not professional athletics. Whenever an argument start and one party decides to reach back into the past for justification I usually shake my head and walk away. I decided early that I would never have anything to do with a woman who has that predilection.

I am not the best in the prediction business but if KC's class 3 lives up to expectations it might not be close.

Interesting changes to Champs schedule. The 800/1500m combination is now easier. Last year the 800m semis was faster than the finals which suggests the schedule was brutal.

Nice that they're making changes to better support the athletes i.e. recovery, rest.

How interesting as per story, said Cbar begged the panel to grant them entry to Champs due to " extenuating " circumstances.

Rogers had a nightmare trying to get to Ja. Nuff said.

Ten days and counting.

I will submit a preview on or about Sunday.

lol, clearly I will have to watch my words around you.
My friend I will have it this coming Sunday the latest, perhaps before. I will not do most of the field events as I want the suspense given my prediction that it is the field events that will determine the winner.

KC will have a tremendous tandem in Stennett and Kerr for class 3?

Unfortunately I am not privy to info both you and Joe have, so I will await your breakdown ( tomorrow ).

Kerr will do just one individual event plus the 4x100.

On another related topic.
Who is this secret weapon they 're saying KC has? I've heard it is McLeod. Some commentators have said likewise. Surely there must be someone else.

Joe,your assessment is due tomorrow.

Olympic Games double sprint gold medallist Elaine Thompson gave a glimpse of what is to come this year, after she ran an effortless but slightly wind-aided 10.75 seconds (2.2m/s) to win the women’s 100-metre event at Saturday’s UTech Classics at the National Stadium.

The joint national record holder — tied with training partner Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce with a best of 10.70 seconds — looked easy as she got off to a good start and was ahead of the field by midway the race. She opened a big gap before easing through the tape.

Jura Levy was second, well back in 11.19 seconds, with Olympic Games sprint relay medallist Christania Williams third in 11.30 seconds.

Zharnel Hughes of Great Britain, who trains with the Glen Mills-led Racers Track Club, won the men’s 100m in a wind-aided 10.08 seconds (2.3m/s), winning the fourth heat.
