Old men who believe Soca iz about Jump/Wine

problemjay 2016-12-31 11:35:44

Yuh know d old generation who still want to believe Soca is only about wine twisted

So they refuse to accept the big Soca tunes that has nothing to do with Jump and Wave or about Wine. (I will name some examples below that is more about Life or Love and nothing to do with Carnival/Jump )

'Far From Finished' from Voice

'I Forget' from Machel

'Lip Service' from Machel

The young generation look at them and laugh. They also need to understand Calypso is not Soca.

lol

Be fair to dem oldsters... 'Soca' the word and the concept really only started to get wings in the early - mid 70s and REALLY took root in the 80s
Soca was born out of kaiso/calypso. Lord Shorty way back in 1963 had 'Cloak and Dagger' and the first full Soca album was in 1975....

old timers call reggae and all variants reggae, same with Calypso... all variants are "calypso songs" lol lol

Bro no need to give us the history of Soca and its early association with Calypso. It is clear TODAY the difference in the two genres of music, so I still do not get their misunderstanding or confusion.

Really?
Dude, BECAUSE the variant is irrelevant as a sub-genre to them. Oldtimers see it as ONE genre- WE can discern...
Chaw... tek it easy princess. I write two sentences and you pissing about " no need to give us the history of Soca " - you running short on Old Oak or what?

This is what many call a 'simpleton' understanding. I will give one example, RnB is a variant from Jazz music, however it is not confused or complicated with Jazz music, Two different genres. Same concept applies here, so for those who do not want to accept the reality will remain confused

Look, the matter is complicated by the fact the most artist from the start of Soca to the late 2000s sang BOTH Soca and Calypso. Not so in R&B ok. Simply NOT SO. It was and is easy to understand why oldtimers blurred the lines on Soca/Calypso.

Go rest. I concede it is better to drink my cold Guinness than "attempt" to explain anything here....

This may be a different twist, but truth be told, I find most of the Caribbean music these days as rubbish - no depth!

Jamaica in particular which limits its music to gunmanship and galmanship is the worst!

I can't understand why the rest of the region don't ban the bs spewing out of Yard under the guise of music!

I bet if such an action was taken producers and musicians would begin to set their house in order

See what happened when U.S. and Britain took action -- the kill and bun chi chi man phase are now on the back burner!

Truth be told, some of the music contributing to crime in the region!
