Amateur Radio Licence in Guyana

Hi my Guyanese friends,

How long does it take/cost to get an Amateur Radio license in Guyana?

I am a Trini with a 9Z4 sign, and I have an FCC/ARRL General class license.

I might be going on a 10 day trip to the interior that coincides with the T&T carnival period and I'm just reviewing how far in advance I will have to plan.

All I have is an HT that I want to take with me (but hoping to have an FT-857D with long wires borrowed for the trip). How much paperwork I need in advance to bring the equipment? Fees?

Thanks for the info!

will you be bringing any firearms or drugs, and have you visited a farm in the last 14 days?

No to all 3. Just finished a 2 week live in missionary training camp on Friday, and the 2 weeks before carnival I would be busy with school.

If you have money and willing to bribe the government you can do as you please., You can even set up a TV Station.

FT-857D is an excellent all mode portable rig. I've used it for 8 years all over the region. (and frequently posted here about it)
100w rig and with a home made dipole antenna cut for 17M I have made contact to as far as Kuwait, Dubai and New Zealand confirmed on LOTW. If you only have the HT radio, you really wont need a license as 2 meter is fairly dead in Guy. not much activity. So get the 857D!!! You will need a tuner, power source, radio, antenna (easy to build).

ESMOND JONES - 8R1AK -is the primary Amateur Radio contact in Guyana from my logs, his email is GY8R1AK@YAHOO.COM I am sure he can offer elmer advice/suggestions

As for the application forms: Here is the Guyana License form

Because you hold a TnT License - you don't have to re-write an exam to get a Guyana license.

From the ARRL:

Regarding the temporary importation of equipment into the country, you need to do the following:

fill out an application for an "Import License" and along with the Customs Entry documents, submit same to our agency for a "no objection to importation" stamp. (Form can be obtained at local stationery store or the Ministry of Tourism and Industry Commerce)
Submit stamped form to the Ministry of Tourism, Industry & Commerce for processing.
Take processed form back to the Customs & Excise Department, Guyana Revenue Authority.

Your timeline is very short, but TnT and Guyana have special radio agreements. Congrats on reaching General Class Operator status.
Hope this info helps

Thanks pelon, I'll send an email. It's a humanitarian project, going to build a roof.

Its a total backpacking trip with river crossings and minimum 24 hours 1 way hiking, I wish I could borrow an Eleckraft.

I plan on using my DIY LiIon 30AH battery pack with a 28W folding Bruton solar panel for the 10 days if I carry an HF radio, but I want to at least pack the 10W HT. I won't be carrying a tuner but pretune some wires for the 40m and 80m regional nets.

But if someone in the group will have an emergency beacon then I'll forgo HF till another trip or at least be licensed so I can use whatever equipment that's already there.

I uploaded some pics of my Radio room, workshop and portable station (with solar). - maybe can give you a few ideas???
Also, take note of my ultra compact "world in a briefcase" radio setup. VERY portable. Easy to travel with - and the 857D allows me to hear everything on air.
