The ladder superstition is a European one...the others could be properly termed Caribbean.
In reply to DukeStreet
Left or right hand, depending on the individual. And if the opposite palm itches, you'll be spending money.
At least that's how I learned it growing up in my neck of the woods.
In reply to DukeStreet
Number 4 definitely correct...

The itchy palm thing is not just believed in the Caribbean, Americans believe it as well.

If you point at a grave you have to bite the finger you pointed with.

I got married on a Friday, oh lort.

I think some of these superstitions were created by our foreparents as a way of getting us to not show disrespect and to keep us safe.
Example: Pointing at a grave might be a sign of disrespect to our foreparents. And the ladder thing might be a good preventative measure from getting whacked in the head.

What's the difference between superstition and faith?
They're all mumbo jumbo
If you go to the sea on Good Friday you will drown.
BTW faith is organised mumbo jumbo. Superstition is just ordinary, garden-variety mumbo jumbo.
In reply to Chrissy
Faith - Strong belief in the doctrines of a religion, based on spiritual conviction rather than proof.
Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
Superstition - Excessively credulous belief in and reverence for the supernatural.
Superstition is fake faith!

What is the difference, other than a positive spin on the one you believe in?

My mom used to say, it not good to open umbrella in the house, she never explain why.
In reply to black
I think in GT, they say if you open an umbrella in house, jumbee will hide under it, or something to that effect.
Another saying is if you like to walk "late", mek sure you come in the house "back-to-back" or with your back turned towards the door, to prevent the evil spirts from coming in behind you.
Mongoose runs across the road while driving - bad luck!
If yuh eat in a pot yuh gun never get married
