Discarded West Indies coach Phil Simmons believes Afghanistan’s One-Day series against West Indies in the Caribbean later this year, will serve as a great opportunity for the fledgling side to begin to make strides in international cricket.
An associate member of the International Cricket Council, Afghanistan will be playing their first-ever bilateral ODI series against a major international full member when they take on West Indies in May/June.
Simmons, hired recently by the Afghanistan Cricket Board to prepare the squad, said at this stage the aim was to be competitive and make inroads.
“I like to be realistic. I don’t think the BCCI (Indian Cricket Board) or the Cricket Australia would be really interested in hosting them for a series at this moment,” said Simmons, who was sacked by the West Indies Cricket Board last September.
“The important thing would be to remain competitive at this level, and when that happens you are bound to get your chance against Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. I think the upcoming series in the Caribbean in May is a step in that direction.”
In Simmons’ first series in charge last month, the Afghans beat Zimbabwe 3-2 in a five-match series in Harare, a tour the Trinidadian believes his side should have won more convincingly.

I have long concluded that West Indies cricket is not about the cricket anymore, but about the people who can live well running the show.

Congrats to Afghanistan for securing the opportunity and well done to West Indies for being accommodating.
If Windies have their sights on gaining rankings points with future series against England and Pakistan, these matches should serve as a good gauge of the team's ability to put up quality performances, at least.
As for Afghanistan, the more the merrier at the 'top level' of the sport. Hope they give a good account of themselves.

It would be nice to see Afghanistan and the Barbados /West Indies compete for the last world cup spot. The Windies / Bados team is certainly one of the worse international sports team in the world, and I sure will not put my money on them no matter who the opponent is.

I have no doubt Afghanistan will beat the West Indies. Our so-called cricketers may have the experience, but it takes more than experience to win. It takes skills with brains, neither of which our so-called cricketers have an abundance of. So, by the end of this encounter, Afghanistan will take their place above the West Indies in the standing. Wow!

Afghanistan are a superior T20 side to Ireland at the moment, not even close. Ireland are the better 4-day side, for the time being.
