You must include LUCK. If good fortune is not on your side all the hard work ,dedication ,determination etc will not get you very far without a touch of good luck.

I think I know his father. Some of the first batch of Guyanese medical students who studied in Cuba died in a plane crash after a bomb was placed on board.I think this chap's dad was in the second batch. The members of that first batch are my contemporaries.

Thanks for the Link , it is very informative . My take is that going to his Professors for help was the
thing that helped him the most .

They realized that he was interested
in learning , and they realized that their efforts was of tremendous help to him .

Obviously when it came to them recommending Students , his name
was at or near the top of the list .

The very fact that his parents had
to struggle hard to achieve their
goals inspired him to work hard to
achieve his goals .

I agree that a bit of luck is never a bad thing, but not that you cannot succeed without it.
Success is 99% perspiration and 1% whatever else.

Or as Malcolm Gladwell says, it takes ten thousand hours of practice to become great.

JohnBull 2017-03-25 01:28:20

you can get it if you really want

or maybe not

What's really surprising is how much it depends on the domain:

• In games, practice made for a 26% difference

• In music, it was a 21% difference

• In sports, an 18% difference

• In education, a 4% difference

• In professions, just a 1% differenc

I knew both of this guy's parents, Aunts and Uncles... Have not seen them since the '80s though...

He's done well... Opportunity is key... Luck = Preparation + Opportunity

The secret to success ..... move to the Bronx when your kids are very young and have them fight their way to the top from there

Headley 2017-03-25 16:31:55

Great story.

I am not seeking to reduce the value of the success achieved just to say it may not be extraordinary in that area. That area is known for producing second generation West Indian professionals many of whom are graduates of the best colleges.

Boston Post Rd to White Plains Road area of the Bronx is populated with middle class West Indians. They expect their children to excel. Some do and some don't. It's not South Bronx.
