Calabar will win Champs by 32 points.

Headley 2017-03-26 22:14:14

In reply to JoeGrine

Big congratulations. Plenty work here. You might as well send the spread sheet. big grin

I think you are 92% accurate. Buchannan will run 5k and SC, not 1500m and SC. Rumour is that Rodgers will run 1500m and 5k. Calabar will have a top 3 place in the class 3 hurdles.

Bryan will run 21.5 or faster in the class 1 200m. If he comes 7th running 21.5 Jamaica's stocks are indeed high, as Mr. Quarrie pointed out last week.

There will be 2 Henrys in the class 3 1500m final. McLeod will separate Turner and Brown in the class 3 long jump. McLoed and Brown are the only two to jump over 6.3m. A few other minor matters but nothing of substance.

Are you aware that your analysis supports by prediction of 4-6 weeks ago that KC will have a first or second place in every race in class 3? The 400m is the possible exception. big grin

Headley 2017-03-26 22:15:10

In reply to archangel

Possible. Not probable, and not based on Mr. Joe Grine's analysis. big grin

JoeGrine 2017-03-27 02:16:20

In reply to Headley

I too would run Rogers 15/5k but you put up a convincing argument for the C2 distances a few weeks ago. Preview adjusted accordingly.

Buchanon at 1500 is KC's best shot at a high score in the event.

Good call on the C3!

Have to change my prediction.
The mishaps has started.

With Dejour Russell possibly out, I will have to go with KC to win Champs.

Should still be close though.

CHS - if Russell competes
100m - 3rd - 6pts
110mH - 1st - 9pts
4x100 - 1st - 12pts
Total points = 27pts

CHS - with Russell's replacement (not factoring the other Calabar entrant)
100m - not in finals
110mH - 5th - 4pts
4x100 - 1st - 12pts
Total points - 16 + 1 point gained as projected 4th placer in hurdles now goes to 3rd

Difference if Russell does not participate:
10 POINTS!!!

We shall see is the difference come Saturday night is 10 points or less.

archangel 2017-03-27 16:34:34

In reply to JoeGrine

They not sure if he will be going in the 110 but he is supposedly out of the 100.

Seems odd that wth a hamstring injury he will still run 110 if true.

If could possibly be that Calabar blowing smoke. Maybe Russell is not the second best for his school in the 100m

Sorry to hear about Russell I was looking forward to see him tackle the 110MH record.

There's a CHS fellow named Xavior Angus who is not too bad. big grin I believe he went under 21 sec in the 200m semis last year and did 21.32 (from memory) in the finals.

RoyalDad 2017-03-27 20:12:00

In reply to JoeGrine

Joe
Your run down is well taken.
Question! Will Bryan not run the 400 to compliment Morris? The scheduling is a headache I can imagine. I presume there will be no Bann or Dontre.

Sorry to hear about Russell. This kid is a darn good talent. But if confirmed, he will most likely miss the entire meet. Why run the 110 if you're not running the 100.

KC's class 3 is the real juggernaut. Points will be racked up here.

The hunt begins tomorrow.

JoeGrine 2017-03-27 20:22:20

In reply to RoyalDad

Bryan (unless he proves me wrong, which is an easy task) is not talented enough to score points in both the 200/400, so if I am KC and I am looking for points I go 200m with him and take whatever points I can get there.

Heard it's an ankle with Russell but he will still hurdle. If the injury is not very serious, he will still win that event.

As it relates to KC's C3 you are spot on. Their field events aren't too shabby either, KC has done their homework, the grading begins........

Ewart 2017-03-28 09:22:52

I am going with Michael Clarke:

I think Calabar has a very good chance of defending successfully. KC has a good team and track and field lovers should have a fantastic treat.

archangel 2017-03-28 21:10:41

Already there are surprises with Calabar suffering the most so far.
Antonio Watson disqualified in the 200. One of the favourites out.

Ewart 2017-03-29 00:08:03

So, Day One. And how is Fortis doing in the chicken counting business?

//

JoeGrine 2017-03-29 04:56:54

In reply to Ewart

DAY 1 = KC
KC's qualifiers are more solid and CHS is bereft of dual qualifiers in events they normally factor two.

"Two records were broken, Holmwood Technical’s Shanette Allison clocked 13.30 seconds (0.3m/s) to win heat number two to erase the 13.38 seconds set in 2013 by Peta-Gaye Williams, then of Camperdown High. Vere Technical’s Britany Anderson, the favourite to win the gold medal, also went under the old record after she won the first heat in 13.37 seconds (0.0m/s)."

Any predictions for the girls?

bedydread 2017-03-29 07:28:45

In reply to JoeGrine

Hey Joe like the predictions, however based on the first day you need to revise the Class 2 200M, Nairne of Wolmers will be top three if not two, I was somewhat surprised initially that you had Peart beating him, they are not in the same "class", yesterday confirmed my assessment.

Ewart 2017-03-29 08:39:22

In reply to JoeGrine

I thought I heard something about a boy named Farquharson who broke a record in the 800?

By a full second??

JoeGrine 2017-03-29 09:34:51

In reply to bedydread

Mr. Bedy, Nairne is much better than Peart, however, both him and fellow Wolmerian Shea were rumored to be nursing slight injuries, hence the elevation of Peart.

So Mr. Wolmers, I was not trying to slight the talent at your institution. big grin

So far so good. Matherson, just on optics, looks unbeatable. Know you have him pegged for 2nd,but...Matt looks good. His action is too smooth.

Not sure what is going on with Pinnock, checking as I write, possibly his knee flared up again.

Matherson does look the part, however, I will stay with Taylor....for now big grin

In reply to RoyalDad

Pinnock's injury looks serious. I was there and I do not think the episode was handled properly by the KC coaching staff but more later. I do not expect him to run hurdles or relay.

I stand to be corrected but except for the CHS class one sprinters and the class 2 800m, there is not much depth there. The throwers and jumpers who usually dominate are not there this year.

By the way "so far so good" is what the man muttered to himself as he passed the 20th floor after jumping off the 40th. big grin

JoeGrine 2017-03-30 04:31:20

DAY 2 = KC
KC's qualifiers are more solid and CHS is bereft of dual qualifiers in events they normally factor two especially the Field Events where I had hinted the race would be decided.

From the original projections, KC has lost approximately 8 points, they have much more to give before CHS can come back at them.

JC packs more punch than they are being given credit for.

RoyalDad 2017-03-30 05:44:19

In reply to Headley

Multiple players in all events, just piggybacking on Joe's comment that Cbar is bereft of dual qualifiers.
And class three not even on show yet.

I have to say being in the stadium the feel is that it is all KC.

This is just after two days though. What happens today, Thursday will make things clear.

JoeGrine 2017-03-30 06:52:13

In reply to archangel

Yesterday was the crucial day and both KC and CHS came thru unscathed. The sprint relays are where fortunes can swing, however, both teams advanced without bother.

How about CHS 39.66 minus Russell and with Carpenter on cruise control. If Russell is fit and the weather permits come Penn could we see the first high school team below 39.00? It will be interesting to see if Angus replaces Carpenter for the finals.

With no relay mishaps on yesterday, KC will literally have to give away the title or CHS do a "Lazarus"!

archangel 2017-03-30 07:15:56

In reply to JoeGrine

Yes, I agree with you. The long jumps Class one Boys underlined the competitive nature of the meet. KC reps were favourite and lived up to the expectations but the other school, including Calabar were hanging in there trying to eek out whatever they could get in the hope that they can stay close.

You are right, something disastrous has to happen for KC to lose at this point but today as they say, is another day.

"Title favourites Kingston College (KC), as expected, grabbed an early lead with 27 points following the two long jump finals, ahead of Jamaica College (JC) and Calabar at the completion of the second day of the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys’ and Girls’ Athletics Championships yesterday. Jamaica College are 15 points adrift of KC with 12 points, followed by defending champions Calabar High on 11, with Green Island High, St Jago High and Wolmer’s Boys’ completing the top six on seven points each."

More here

mikesiva 2017-03-30 07:29:55

"Hydel High are the leaders after picking up points in both finals, the Class One discus throw and the Class Two shot put and are on 12 points, just one ahead of Immaculate Conception on 11, with former champions Holmwood Technical and St Jago High tied in third place on 10 points, followed by defending champions Edwin Allen High on nine points, with Excelsior High next on eight points. Three more finals will be contested today, a busy day for the sprinters with the first round of the 100m and the semi-finals of the 200m and 800m, as well as the first round of the 400m hurdles."

Don't forget the girls

JoeGrine 2017-03-30 08:32:44

Is it true that Antonio Watson was DQed in the 200m? Last year he was DQed in the 400m.

This talented youth looks like he has a lot to contribute to Ja's T&F. I hope he has his head on right because there are many folks out there willing to 'tek him to the cleaners.'

JoeGrine 2017-03-30 10:05:21

In reply to Headley

He was the 2nd of the two boys who false started in his 200m heat. I like him for the 400m gold but make no mistake Jevaughn Powell looks the part of a winner. Perhaps Powell 200/400 double will play into Watson's hands now that the later will only be doing the 400m.

DAY 3 = KC

For most of day 2 CHS seemed to be on par with KC not because of any gains by CHS rather due to attrition by the North Street crew, well, the 2000mSC put an end to that.

Will Rowe's injury cause major concern for the KC sprint relay?

Stennett.Where have we been hiding this kid?

archangel 2017-03-31 06:53:06

In reply to Headley

Yes, this will be the race of the meet, Matherson vs Taylor.

Reminder, Taylor is first year class one but he is exceptional so most people think that he is Materson's equal.

Both looked impressive. Raw speed tends to trump the guy with stamina over 200. In that case Matherson should be the pick but Taylor is a warrior. This is what is going to make it the race of Champs on Saturday not to mention that Taylor will also have duties in the 400m to think about.

Anyway, at the end of tonight's programme, the projections for tomorrow should be a little bit easier.

I am reminded of one of myh sports reporters coming back from Champs one Friday night with a story titled

KC LEAD

I sat with him and went over the results so far, looking at the athletes who had qualified for the finals. When we were done, the new headline read:

KC LEADS
BUT CALABAR WELL SET

As it turned out, Calabar won.

Loss of Matherson, Russell not withstanding, has put KC in a very precarious position.

Class3 kids have made their point, but...

Missing hurdlers not helping either.

Well Joe, your prediction may come to pass. The throws.

archangel 2017-03-31 21:38:44

As expected Matherson picked out intentionally.
You could see the body language.

He had to report for the start in the hope that he may feel better for the relays.
If he had not done that he would be liable to be barred from any further participation

JoeGrine 2017-03-31 21:58:14

DAY 3 = CHS

Calabar has gotten all the breaks today and in the process, KC's projected points margin has all but disappeared. KC has 10 points(2nd place) all but locked up in the C1 4x100 to run Matherson there is a big risk as KC will need every point tomorrow save the C1 200 if Matherson cannot go.

Good acting??

archangel 2017-03-31 23:22:46

In reply to Ewart

It was pretty clear that was the plan.

He came to the start, set up his blocks and just stood behind it. No warm up, nothing. He wasn't even looking down the track.

If his coach looked surprised and it convinced you then he should look at acting after he is done with coaching.
cool

JoeGrine 2017-04-01 03:36:02

Minus any Saturday contribution from Matherson, baton mishaps or further injuries by either team, I see KC winning by 7 points.

Edwin Allen should take the girls section, however, they will not be the runaway winners pundits forecasted.

The blame game will prevail if KC loses champs. And it will be directed to the coach of course. Mostly for his handling of Matherson, and the complete lack of hurdlers at all levels except Pinnock who got injured.

Headley,man you're quiet.

Projectione were for them to be leading by 21 points. It would have been larger not for the loss of Maherson and Pinnock ( winners/ 18 points ).

Wish the lead was bigger but we will have to work with what we have. Fortis.

Time for specifics later.

There is a metric that assumes supreme importance at this, the beginning of the final day, and it is this:

KC is in 30 finals.

Calabar is in 32 finals.

All year I was questioning use of Matherson.

Activity caught up to him. Sad that Bann, Williams and now Matherson have all fallen at crucial times over the past three years to the same coach/manager.

Lose this champs and the writing is on the wall.

Based off of remaining finals,KC still holds a slight edge, barring any mishaps.

Joe,keep posting.

Did Stennett lose because he was fooling around/shutting it down in the 200 final?

Yes. But he was used too much pre season. It caught up to him.
Almost same situation when we lost him,Bloomfield,Bann and Williams.

Last 6 years KC should have won 2. Injuries and mismanagement are to blame.

Fortis gave it their all.

archangel 2017-04-01 22:52:41

Even though I was on record saying Calabar would win Champs, I have come to appreciate the myriad of moving pieces that go toward coming out on top. This Champs has taught me that.

My choice went from one team to the next. Only those related to their team held firm and that is understood. As much as KC throughout the season looked the part, I do know a little about Calabar's management to realize that whatever KC had, they would be prepared to deal with it.

The planning for 2018 may have already started.

Defending champions Edwin Allen and Calabar are now at the top of the points standings on the final day of the 107th staging of the ISSA Boys’ and Girls’ Athletics Championships currently under way at the National Stadium.

Edwin Allen leads the girls’ tally with 184.5 points, ahead of St Jago on 170 points and Holmwood Technical on 154 points after 30 events scored. Hydel High on 139 points and Vere Technical on 91.5 points make up the top five.

Meanwhile, Calabar are on 198 points, 22 points ahead of Kingston College on 176 after 26 events scored. Jamaica College (118 points), St Jago (90 points) and Wolmer’s Boys (55 points) complete the top five.

JoeGrine 2017-04-02 09:47:52

CHS - Congratulations. They showed their "back room" is a cut above all other schools in Jamaica. They scored where expected and snatched unexpected points. A little help from their "friends" (see C3 200 and 4x400) was surely welcomed.

KC - fought gallantly, however, their "back room" must do better to ensure the hard work put in by the athletes do not go in vain. Decisions in C1 for the 800, 1500 and Medley did not help the cause.

INJURIES - one cannot use these as excuses as they are a part of the sport, however, even the most anti-KC onlooker must admit the loss of Matherson and Pinnock changed the game!

UNDER THE RADAR - If the Spaldings Medley Relay anchor ran 1:53 what did Anthony Cox of St. Jago split? Cox got the baton at least 25m behind Spaldings and finished 2m behind.

RoyalDad 2017-04-02 12:02:37

In reply to JoeGrine

Well Joe, injury was the cause KC lost, so it is a valid excuse. Not withstanding very bad management, they go hand in hand with the loss.

Pinnock I would grudgingly not use as cause, but Matherson was the defining factor in the loss.

For all the points Cbar may have gained by their "expert backroom", it never would have mattered if Matherson was not injured. KC was simply the better team, and solely lost because of said bad management and yes, injury.

So I will extend to them another congrats. But the charge will be coming again next year with even more vigor and determination. Make no mistake about that.

As always Joe, nice to have your input and we will touch base again.

Happy Easter .

bedydread 2017-04-02 13:05:57

Very exciting champs and KC can consider themselves unlucky, I guess you have to make your own luck at times.
It is clear Cbar will not hand over their title gently, KC with all their mishaps was still in with a shout at the end, I can 't escape the feeling that this was a champs they should not have lost, it will sting for awhile.
If we look at the long term I expect KC will be in pole position again next year, the question is will they deliver, there is so much falling going around and yielding is following closely, time to step up purples.

No excuses, mean just that, once that line is used, it should be followed by period.

You cannot say no excuses but, ok sah...Excuses only count in little leagues, not in the big leagues..Winners find a way to win. Rabalac to the world.

Joe, Royal Dad, Archangel and others who have a real interest in times, distances, heights and the details of track and field it was good to spend the last few months discussing schoolboy athletics. Thanks for the info and the feedback. Those who focus on the school rivalry it was good to exchange with you too. I look forward to Carifta, Penn and the professional season.

I will be particularly keen to see how the athletes who participated at Champs during the past four years fare. The females are looking particularly threatening and the class 3 and 4 Champs conveyor belt looks likely to keep producing better and better competitors. Lots to look forward to.

Fortis big grin

It was a pleasure to discuss track & field (most civilly I might add) with the group here.

A few points:

Pinnock I would grudgingly not use as cause, but Matherson was the defining factor in the loss.

If Pinnock runs the hurdles the title is at North Street

For all the points Cbar may have gained by their "expert backroom", it never would have mattered if Matherson was not injured. KC was simply the better team, and solely lost because of said bad management and yes, injury.

A better team comprises not just quality athletes but also quality decision makers.

Dat is class.

The girls put on a show. Absolutely amazing performances. The pipeline looks very promising going forward. That young lady who broke the 24 sec, barrier for class 4 was the talk of the meet.

Also looking towards Carifta.

Penn.Dont know if I will drive down. Place is packed to the max.But Cbar should put on a show. I think Matt should sit out and move to the next level, whether that be local college or US based.

Last year this time we were all talking about ET. No such excitement this time around. Gayon Evans has made some interesting conversations, but nothing to be overly "excited" about.

As always Headley, will be most anxious come next year. I believe most of our guys remain except Matt,Bryan and couple others.

Fortis.

I have attended champs the past few years. I am not a graduate of the big two, so I believe I am objective. Along with being out coached and out strategized, I remarked to some KFC old boys that calabar seems to have recruited alpha males. Kc athletes are soft. Last year based on my seat I had a good view of the long jump. You could see the calabar kid straining every muscle to hang with the boy from JC. Calabar has a bunch of alphas..kc is soft

For me, it's Brianna Lyston....

"Jamaica may have a new Usain Bolt on their hands after a 12-year-old female sprinter ran almost within two seconds of the 200m world record. Brianna Lyston stormed to a record time to win the 200m at the 2017 Boys and Girls Championships over the weekend posting a time of 23.72 seconds. She finished 0.88 seconds ahead of her nearest rival and only 2.38 seconds behind the 21.34 second world record set by Florence Griffith-Joyner at the 1988 Olympics."

Rather, I would call her the new Merlene Ottey

Here she is, winning the 100m in 11.86

Joe/ Headley,Gleaner reporting that Matherson will run again next year class 1. Is that possible? Is it a age thing?

Headley 2017-04-04 21:20:15

In reply to RoyalDad

In theory he could because he will not be 20 years old until Jan 2019. In reality it's unlikely because he needs adult professional handling to get to the next level. We don't need another Champs star who fails to show at the next level. Matherson is also a good student, not an athlete/student but a student/athlete. He will have many options.

JoeGrine 2017-04-05 08:11:48

For ISSA it is September 1st that is used to determine class eligibility. As such, Matherson is eligible for Champs next year.

As to him returning to KC for the 2018 Champs, this is totally on him and his advisors.

Russell is very good. I just don't like him leading with his left foot. But it works for him.
Timor Barrett. Nice performance.
Kerr class 3 is his to dominate.

Touch base.
