So I went by the Julie mango tree this morning

Chrissy 2017-04-03 11:24:05

around 8.00 after my morning walk.
Picked up two that fell over night (good for juicing) and then looked for some turning ones.
Saw this lovey one all red, yellow orange and green - touched it and it literally slipped into my hand.
Chilled it for two hours - just had my first slice - freaking delish - the perfect mango - perfectly fit and ripe.

Eat yuh hearts out.

what is the best way to enjoy a ripe julie mango?

for me, knead it and soften it real good without breaking the skin. Put in fridge for a bit, then insert straw or just make small puncture and have fun.

hands stay clean and nothing stuck in teeth.

The julie tree will soon be ready. I fear mangoes though. Its so addictive. Especially nice julies of the type you described. You have to exercise regularly to eat mango.

Her's is picking a mango from a tree. What's your life simple pleasures?

One of mine is to get up and enjoy rowing through my own gears every morning while I drive to work. Driving stick-shift is fun for me even here in NY. cool cool cool

Eat yuh hearts out.

Ok, rub it in.

My issue though runs a lot deeper than the (un)availability of the various mango 'variety'. While I love to see mangoes and even smell them, that's as close I can get without a visit to the emergency room.

Actually, I can taste a black mango (aka green-edge (sp)), but that's it.

When me read you comments about the Julie mangoes it just mek me heart sing – me have like 3 variety of what could be rightly called “FAKE” mangoes on me kitchen counter. I never knew you had sour mangoes – I bought 6 seemingly good looking mangoes at a farm couple days ago ---- sour oranges are sweeter than them ----- with the other species – you buy six – and may salvage 1 ½ ---- George Bush had supposedly made a deal with India to import Bombay mangoes – I was excited – but that never materialize --- maybe I may have to move to florida and star a mango farm - big grin

When the queen visited JA in '66 she was hosted by then GG, Sir Clifford Campbell. The flight over from Britain was long and also marred by horrible weather. The trek from Palisadoes was also arduous as the open air limo provided no protection from the brutal Kingston sun. So after moving slowly for most of the journey so that she could wave to the majesty-struck locals and enduring the pressure of being under Roy Lawrence, she arrived at Kings House in state of complete fatigue.

The queen excused herself and went straight to her quarters to hold a fresh, take a nap and ready herself for supper. And what a supper it was. My grandfather, Aristobull, who attended in his capacity as chief liason between the Crown and the city of Kingston, recounted the tale of the splendour and grandeur of this meal to us dozens of times --- legs of lamb and beef, trays of giant glazed lobsters, massive red snappers stuffed with callallo and shrimp and baked to perfection, capons of all varieties served on trays of gold, plantains and yams and breadfruits, grilled, broiled and roasted ....simply the very best that the farms of the island had to offer.

Elizabeth, Phillip and guests feasted like there was no tomorrow and as the meal came to an end and dishes started to be cleared, the murmurings of dessert began. It was all the wonder how would GG and Lady Campbell top the meal. The head chef at Kings House was renowned but such had been the meal's magnificence that there was genuine fear that the sweets would fall short and thus diminish the evening. What would or could top this .... chocolate cake, plantain tarts, plum pudding .....what ....?

The suspense was heightened even more by a short delay and to fill the time Sir Clifford ordered the band to play adagio while the waiters re-filled everyone's glasses. Whispered rumours re the final course filled the room and the anticipation, due in no small part to the excellence of the main meal, was intense.

Finally it arrived. Plated in twos, on gleaming silver trays and carried on high by a platoon of servers, was the dessert of desserts.

Bombay mangoes, perfectly halved and seeded, each filled with a heaping scoop of ice cream, freshly churned in the great house's kitchen. One half had rum and raisin and the other, cherry vanilla, and the ensemble was completed by a generous slice of ote-eti apple aesthetically placed between the Bombay orbs.

ELizabeth and Phillip stared at their plates and at each other, nervously. Lady C, sensing the problem, identified the items and once the mystery was solved it was, as they say at Caymanas Park when a favourite goes post to post, all over bar the shouting.

The royal couple tucked in and seemed thoroughly to be enjoying when Sir Alexander leaned over and asked the Queen what she thought of her dessert. She replied that it was very sweet and delicious to which he responded, "Yes mi dear ...it sweet like a tullolups".

So doan joke with bombay mango and ice cream, Mr. Ewart .... it is a treat fit for a queen ....and king!

Oh btw .... is a true story dis, doan have no doubts. razz lol

Great tale, and very well told. I have no doubt of its authenticity. Especially not after Busta and his tullolups!

Truth is... I never aspired to Royalty and would not have encountered any such delights. But the very richness of your prose has convinced me.

True. A nice "Common/Hairy Mango" can be just as good. So many nice varieties of mango.

Remember my dearly departed uncle who had a very huge Bombay tree, of cotton tree proportion, in his yard, mixing the scooped-out Bombay with condensed milk, putting it in that large white enamel mug that was used to make lemonade, "setting" it in the freezer and you had it before it became frozen hard. Was like ice cream. Very nice.
