President X1 vs Pakistan

solidrock 2017-04-15 12:27:06

Hetmyer scores a chanceless and workmanlike 50. Very Good.

for that reason, the word "Hard" is in there, selectors over the years have made some strange choices, i would have selected him instead of Vishaul Singh
however with the test team in need of an opener.......he would do himself the world of good

No guarantee he will eventually succeed

Let him continue for few more seasons in dung heap...then A team

Learning the job as an opening batsman can be brutal

Otherwise rush him and he may be mentally destroyed permanently

Pres XI 305-5, and Amir is firing away at Reifer, and finding thick edges at times. Reifer not cowed tho. Still batting enterprisingly, as usual.

In reply to Narper

Great team batting and congrats to Singh, that is what I mean about batsmen who have the ability to transition into international / test players while others given so many opportunities but yet to consistently demonstrate that they can handle test level despite their prolific regional scoring.

Norm 2017-04-16 14:18:42

Roach looking really good - fast an accurate.

Joseph is struggling for line here. Quick enough, but he's all over the place! Joseph's line has improved now, but he is still too wide outside off.

Shehzad plays the ball late, and a bit across the line, but he is a clean striker of the ball.

WI needs to keep Roach in his current physical condition by not overworking him.

Norm 2017-04-16 14:36:21

Reifer takes over from Joseph. Immediately starts with a good off-stump line. Length a bit short, but getting better.

Wicket!

Norm 2017-04-16 14:45:04

Masood caught brilliantly at first slip (Cornwall?), trying to steer a widish ball outside off from Reifer thru the gully!

Norm 2017-04-16 14:46:44

In reply to voiceofreason

Look like Singh just nyam Blackwood food.

Vishaul Singh looks like the kind of guy that will not give you back your lunch, once he takes it!

Norm 2017-04-16 14:48:20

Azhar in, and Reifer seems to be having some trouble adjusting his line.

Norm 2017-04-16 14:51:37

Roach into his sixth straight over. Come on, skipper. Don't overbowl him.

Reifer's line is much better now. He's trying to get it to move back in from off to the right-hander.

Norm 2017-04-16 15:00:02

Joseph takes over from Roach. Falls over after delivering his first ball. Still nervous. Being milked around the ground. Misses his run too!

Line and length getting a bit better as the over progresses.

Pak 40-1 in 13 overs. Shehzad 18*, Azhar 2*. Drinks at the end of the over.

granite 2017-04-16 15:15:21

Pakistan mussy setting up Windies selectors like the Australians do, Singh, Powell and Hetymyer, know wot ah mean,ah hope daiz not de case.

Norm 2017-04-16 15:19:28

Azhar caught behind off Joseph, moving to leg and nibbling at one in the off stump channel!

Hamilton looking good behind the wicket.

voiceofreason 2017-04-16 15:20:49

In reply to Norm

Why was he moving to leg and the ball is on off?

Thanks for the ball by ball commentary.

analyst-kid 2017-04-16 15:22:19

In reply to granite

yup..de Aussies are famous for doing that.

Norm 2017-04-16 15:23:00

In reply to voiceofreason

Why was he moving to leg and the ball is on off?

Looks he thought the ball would have moved in to him from the off stump.

Meanwhile, Reifer is maintaining a miserly off stump line to everyone.

Norm 2017-04-16 15:39:47

Cornwall to bowl. Almost gets a wicket first ball! Edge to pad balloons up but falls safely between short leg and fine leg.

Slipfeeler 2017-04-16 15:40:01

In reply to voiceofreason

Blackwood will remain in test team until he has some consistency in failure, he is has the most half centuries than any other young player and steps to to the challenge of test cricket despite his poor regional showing. He seems bored or unchallenged by regional cricket but steps up for bigger matches.

Slipfeeler 2017-04-16 15:42:02

However Singh, Hetmeyer and Powell should all be included in the test squad.

Norm 2017-04-16 15:42:20

Cornwall flightly nicely, on a good middle stump length and line.

Norm 2017-04-16 15:42:43

Roach back. Good deliveries, but still plagued by no balls.

voiceofreason 2017-04-16 15:49:14

In reply to Slipfeeler

Dude. Blackwood is playing for Jamaica in Barbados when the Bajan West indies players opted out of the same game so it is reasonable to conclude that he did not get the call.

Norm 2017-04-16 15:51:47

Cornwall causing trouble for these accomplished batsmen! Somebody will be taken at short leg soon.

Drapsey 2017-04-16 15:54:53

Pakistan 56/9 in 22 overs?

At least that's what the UpStream Video saying.

Norm 2017-04-16 15:55:19

Roach continues. He is stuttering a bit before delivering, but Hamilton's excellent keeping is collecting everything that strays.

Norm 2017-04-16 15:57:44

Cornwall continues. The batsmen can't play him comfortably. Younis moving down the track and defending. Even a shorter one one leg gets away, because of the batsmen's entrenched defensive mindset.

Baje 2017-04-16 15:59:58

In reply to Drapsey
Whats de real score?

Norm 2017-04-16 16:00:43

Watching Cornwall bowl, you have to wonder why isn't he in the Test team yet. He's an attacking off-spinner, unlike the other WI spinners around.

Drapsey 2017-04-16 16:01:06

In reply to Baje

59/2 in 23 overs.

They corrected it.

Norm 2017-04-16 16:02:24

Roach bowling well, but for the no-balls - about 1 per over now.

Drapsey 2017-04-16 16:03:41

In reply to Norm

There are 12 extras out of the 59 runs.

Norm 2017-04-16 16:05:29

In reply to Drapsey

There are 12 extras out of the 59 runs.

About 10 from Roach's no-balls, and 2 from Joseph's.

Slipfeeler 2017-04-16 16:16:51

In reply to voiceofreason

Sounds like a reasonable explanation!
However he wouldn't be the first player to be dropped despite not failing, Sarwan, Nash, Deonarine, and Chanderpaul came to mind. While Tonge wasn't even given an opportunity to bowl.

Norm 2017-04-16 16:26:35

Play continues after tea and it's Cornwall to bowl. Younis almost puts it in the hands of backward short leg!
Shehzad retakes his guard against Cornwall - leg stump this time!

Cornwall is causing the batsmen lots of problems here. Fielders surrounding the bat. These two, Shehzad and Younis, are accomplished batsmen!

Norm 2017-04-16 16:29:58

Reifer switches ends, and immediately takes the edge of Younis's bat. Hamilton makes no mistake behind the stumps, and Pak are 64-3!

Hamilton took that almost in front of 1st slip.

Norm 2017-04-16 16:31:26

These youngsters are looking more motivated that the Test side. smile

Norm 2017-04-16 16:32:57

Bouncer to Misbah - first ball from Reifer, bowling over the wicket from an angled run.

Norm 2017-04-16 16:38:35

Straighter balls from Cornwall rap the batsman and loud appeals go up. Not out!

The batsman sweeps one on leg for 4! Dangerous shot.

Baje 2017-04-16 16:44:08

In reply to Slipfeeler
What is your definition of "not failing", why do you keep saying that Jerome has more 50s than any other youngster?

Norm 2017-04-16 16:45:48

Cornwall again. The batsmen are trying to sweep him now. Rapped outside off trying to sweep to leg, and a loud appeal! Not out!

Cornfused 2017-04-16 16:48:48

Good stuff from these players on the fringe or next in line.

Norm 2017-04-16 16:49:09

Play held up for several minutes, as the umps discuss something.

Reifer continues. Bouncer. Great middle-off line, moving it away from the right-handers off the seam.

Norm 2017-04-16 16:57:39

Players leave the field in rather dark conditions. The ground staff rush on with the covers. No rain actually falling as yet tho.

Pak 69-3 in 31 overs.

It has started to drizzle now.

Reifer could be a vernon philander type bowler

He lacks one that moves back in sharply to the right-hander. He is a very smart bowler tho, and has very good control.

He also bats smartly, and gets on with it.

I won't be surprised to see him play Test cricket.I get the impression that he will command a regular Test spot if he ever gets in.

Norm 2017-04-16 17:16:23

In reply to Baje

He is an intelligent player, but I really do not see any special talent there. Personally I think Mayers has more ability.

Mayers is the most talented swing bowler in the region, in my opinion.

Reifer exceeds most others in his application tho. He is determined, and will make the most of every little bit of ability he has - unlike Mayers, and many, many other regional players.

Slipfeeler 2017-04-16 17:22:26

For it would be inconceivable for you or anyone else to consider that a consistent half century scores as failure by a batsman. Especially when others are scoring significantly less!

Baje 2017-04-16 17:24:29

In reply to Norm

Reifer does have a Shiv like approach, if not a Shiv like talent. Time will tell, but he has to more with the ball including a lil more pace.

analyst-kid 2017-04-17 04:19:05

Well he is one of the few all rounders who avg 40+ with the bat this season. And 30 wickets with a sub 30 bowling avg.

...deny our batsmen a chance to have a second look at their bowlers .... and not give Roach time to recover.

Couldn't agree more

Gone for 22. Probably the last we will see of Hety for the next little while (before an A team tour at least). He can reflect on a pretty good season considering he's only 20, but also one of missed opportunities. I hope he is encouraged to keep working hard, stays motivated, and realize that there are times when he should buckle down and grind his runs out. He won't be able to dominate every bowler at every stage of his innings.

I will take a guess that he was caught at short leg, I think Azhar Ali fields there for Pakistan.

yup caught at short leg.. backing away to punch the leg spinner through cover.. inside edge on to his pads and straight to short leg

with an improved temperament he will learn how to not play those types of shots and kick on

at 20 i am happy with what;s there...next year is a big big year for him

off to cpl to earn his 3k salary big grin big grin

WestDem 2017-04-17 15:53:33

In reply to CricketLuva4

Darn it! he needed two consistent innings here to solidify his name in the selectors mind...well he should be a fixture for a few "A" team games until his aggression is tempered!

A step up from more "rash" dismissals I've seen from him.

Oh he's gonna eat a food too? Good for him, and he will have one of the masters in Guptill to learn from.

yep

lil food deh to eat

he will continue to learn...i think he will light up the CPL if he gets a play

mikesiva 2017-04-17 16:09:56

Powell gets another half century. I think he's played himself into the test team.

now over to him

Runs at the right time trumps runs when nobody is looking.

Powell scores two fifties, his failures barring one innings since return are now less relevant.

Vishaul (who had a lean season, but scored a timely 100) may even be ahead of Ambris (who was consistent across formats this season, but sadly might have missed his chance in the squad because of two failures this weekend).

How do you learn to dominate the bowling if you don't practice to? Would you become a grinder and then one day magically start to dominate?

Hetmyer has the right approach and will get better in his chosen style. It is up to the selectors to value what he has to offer, now or at some other point in his career.

Baje 2017-04-17 16:32:17

Vishaul did have two good back to back seasons followed by a good A team tour

If he continues like this he will be the next Tarzan...who has the fastest test ton on debut...but nothing after

Alyuh remember Xavier Marshall...not much different from Hety at 20 years old...we know what happened to him...he probably still holds the record for the most sixes in a ODI match here in Toronto ( King City)

Alyuh see what is happening to Evin Lewis in ODIs

Hety must learn controlled aggression

Look...for those of us who saw Viv Richards...he was not lash lash lash from ball one..and he was a genius.
