The Walcott and Miller Show

West Indies v Australia, fifth Test, 1955
From a West Indies perspective, this was Clyde Walcott's Test. He scored two centuries in a match for the second time in the series - a feat never before accomplished. While solid in defence, he drove, pulled and cut his way to 155 in the first innings and 110 in the second. His efforts, however, were dwarfed by a rampaging Australia. Their first (and only) innings featured five centurions - a record - including a double for Neil Harvey, which set up Australia's highest ever Test total, 758 for 8 declared. More impactful than even Walcott was Keith Miller, who supplemented a century of his own with eight wickets in the match as the tourists marched to an emphatic innings victory.

I was at that match (Walcott and Miller show) for part of it. Saw Walcott's second innings. WOW

Holding vs India...thought that would have made the list of Sabina sizzlers and Jerome Taylor's demolition of England.

While I am not complaining,I instinctively looked for that famous test in 1968 when Garry performed miracles.After hitting a century on a minefield of a wicket he then opened the bowling and dismissed 2 great batsmen in a double-wicket maiden.

Was that the match with the likkle missile throwing incident? Caused by Nurse's dismissal, I think.

A man at my country was so excited about Sobers' bowling, he exclaimed, "Sobers clean-bowl Boycott leg before!".

I was likkle bit then, but that match is indelible.

It was the dismissal of Basil Butcher caught behind by a low catch by the keeper that sparked the missile throwing.I saw a wonderful anecdote about that incident.
It was said that many Jamaicans in playing backyard cricket rule a catch invalid if your hand touches the ground.They would ask that you show the back of your hand ,and if it had dirt,then the catch is not valid.

At the top of my cricket memories. Remember coming home from school just in time to see Sobers and a fired-up Wes Hall having the Englishmen bobbing and weaving. Sobers got first ball duck in first innings, century in second innings on minefield, opening the bowling in the second innings and doing damage; sheer genius. But then we crucified him after that declaration in the fourth test in Trinidad.

And then of course after declaring and losing in Trinidad, they came to Guyana.

Another anecdote (probably false)
The customs agent at the Guyana airport asked Sobers if he had anything to declare and Sobers said ABSOLUTELY NOT!!!.I done with declaring!!!!!!!

I saw the Bourda test match when Sobers played his heart out to try to win that test match and draw the series.
He made 150 in the first innings and was on 95 in the second when I think it was Hall, Griffith and Gibbs were all dismissed, robbing him of a century in each innings. He took 3 wickets in each innings but Cowdrey and the wicketkeeper used their pads to keep Gibbs out and Umpire Kippins refused to give them out LBW and they saved the match with 1 wicket left.

One thing I remember from that 5th Test was Keith Miller writing favorably about the bowling of Lester King, and saying he was the best WI fast bowler he had seen in that series. Based on his performance they had to pick him for the upcoming tour to Australia later that year. I always wondered why King wasn't selected for the fourth test when Wes Hall wasn't playing. Can't remember if Hall was injured or dropped.

I saw Lester King at Bourda but have little memory of his bowling. What I do remember is Jackie Hendriks stumping somebody off his bowling. To me Jackie Hendriks is the best West Indian wicketkeeper ever, a view that is shared by both Lloyd and Umpire Kippins

You just reminded me of a story Cozier told about Wes. He said that at the end of his career he was bowling in Bim and he was so slow compared to his heyday that someone in the crowd shouted "Give it some air Wes"
