HEADLINE: Tendulkar gets stand at Lara Stadium

CaribbeanCricket.com 2017-04-23 06:09:12

The North West Stand of the Brian Lara Cricket Stadium will be named after Indian batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar. But the move is not sitting well with the president of the T&T Cricket Board (TTCB) Azim Bassarath, who is asking what has Tendulkar ever done for T&T or West Indies cricket.

Chairman of the Sports Company of T&T Michael Phillips confirmed to Guardian Media Limited that the stand would be named after Tendulkar when the facility is officially opened next month and insisted that the decision was one that was made after consultation with Brian Lara.

“Our decision to name the stand after Mr Tendulkar was done on the advice of Mr Brian Lara. We have included Mr Lara in our decision making process in terms of how we roll out the launch and management of both the stadium and the academy,” Phillips said.

Does Lara have a stand in India?

Hopefully Mr Tendulkar will accept and relish in the honor (so as not to embarrass Mr Lara and by extension, the Caribbean people).

Transparent attempt at pandering to the Indian audience.

In time, this will become a Sachin Tendulkar stadium with the possibility of a stand for Brian Lara..

Today is Sunday. The only God that cricket has ever known and will ever know is Sachin. Because of Sachin, modern cricketers are eating a food. Brian Lara is leading WI cricket in acknowledging it.

Mate, you have behaved very politely in the past, bordering on cerebral. Today you have departed significantly from this exemplary behaviour and you have taken it to almost intolerable insanity levels.

Calm down...this is not good for your mental health.

But why not a windian? Viv sobers or Kanhai?
Kanhai was Lara coach.

I guess they haven't done much according to Lara, who is part of the consultative process..

Sachin has done a lot for Trickydadians. He has allowed thousands of Trinis to name their children after him.

It's better than the Daren Ganga, Suruj Ragoonath, Dave Mohammed, and Mervyn Dillon stand.

Let's be real here, Trinidad produced one great batsman, and that's it.

Ian Bishop is probably worthy of a stand seeing that he was a good to very good cricketer, and has now gone on to become the best cricket commentator in the West Indies.

CLR James or someone for the region sake but Tendulkar who fail like mad while playing in the West indies? Him play a decent innings in the caribbean?

This is quite a magnanimous gesture from the Prince of Port-of-Spain. Well done BCL.

Almost as similar to the Ian Fleming International Airport built in Jamaica, the 3rd International airport in JA is named after the author of the James Bond books because he wrote most of the books in Jamaica,

I have a hard time believing Lara was born in Trinidad. I mean they've only been able to produce one great cricketer? He's probably Guyanese, possibly a Bajan.

I think it's more the other islands who are giving the name Sachin from what I have seen. Many Afro Trinis also have Indian fuss names, plus there are so many Douglars.

I don't know what glue you are on as a Trini

I have not heard of any Trinibagionians naming a child after Sachin

Rohan is still the most popular name.

bravos 2017-04-23 13:00:53

Lara and Tendy are very close friends btw..This was initiated by Lara.

I personally know of Kapil....after Kapil Dev...after Indian won the WC in 1983
wink

Narper 2017-04-23 16:38:42

Tendulkar played 2 test matches at QPO...in 1997 and 2002....he played his LAST test in 2013....and he played 200 test matches

He played 3 ODIs at QPO ....last one in 2002...his last ODI was in 2012 and he played 463 ODIs

Trinis did see TenD in the flesh only a few times wink

Narper 2017-04-23 16:40:58

I expect Lara to name another stand after Shiv

Shiv was there with him for his first world record of 375

Shiv has been with him at the crease more than any other WI player

Trinis will riot oui big grin

sgtdjones 2017-04-23 18:08:56

In reply to Narper

Shiv is a fan favourite in T&T.They should have something named after Shiv and Lara
for breaking Sobers record. When Shiv plays in the South with Ganga Foundation, the kids
want his autograph and picture .

I know three kids named after Shiv but no Sachin.

About a dozen named Rohan.

pelon 2017-04-23 19:11:52

I can't accept a cricketer - no matter how great - that never represented the island or region, be honored in THAT way?

Is this a public paid or private paid stadium? If latter, then th book is closed, do as they wish.

If it is from the public coffers, name it from the long list of Trinidadian people that shaped T&T cricket...

Apparently its the restrooms that will be named for Tendulkar.

folks are so used to seeing Indians crapping on the streets that with naming the toilets after an Indian, one would automatically know where to go to take a crap.

- unlike India where they shite right there in the stands

Scar 2017-04-23 19:31:33

Typical West Indian lack of nationalism awareness! Lara could never get a Stadium named after him in India! Probably a Bust in one of them but a named part of a stadium, never!!
