Currently in the Rankings:
8----West Indies----69 points
9----Bangladesh----66 points
I don't know how points are allocated for Test matches, but Bangladesh is sure catching up!!!!!!

Are WI soon at No.9 in Test Cricket?
In reply to thefacts
We have declined to the level of Bangladesh.
We should play them more often so that we can actually get a chance to win a series.

I think there should be more cricket between WI, Bangladesh, Zimbabwe, Afghanistan and Ireland.
Honestly, it could be quite entertaining!
In reply to thefacts
We are already number 9, the numbers just haven't caught up yet.

Agreed. Implement second tier test cricket. Give Afghanistan and Ireland test status.

I think second tier cricket will go a long way in improving test cricket
But at the same time allow all countries to maintain bi-lateral series
So what I mean is, countries are free to play outside their tier, but must play their tier counterparts
Let me detail this further in a separate post
Suppose for instance:
1) Afghans and Irish are added as Test Nations and total number is 12.
2) Two tiers with 6 Teams each.
3) Let the Review period be 2 years for Tier Change i.e. every two years, a team has a chance to change tiers
4) So what happens in those two years:
4.1 Each Nation must play atleast 1 series vs the other 5 nations in their tier.
4.2 Each Nation is free to play other bi-lateral series, however their results will not be added to the tier ranking system.
So as an Example:
Tier.1 = Aus, Eng, NZ, Ind, SA and Pak
Tier.2 = SL, BL, WI, Zim, Afg and Ire
So say between 2019 and 2021, West Indies has to play at least one series (home or away) with remaining teams in Tier.2
Same for everyone else.
At the end of 2021, Whoever is the top Team in the Tier-2, will go upto Tier-1, and last ranked team in Tier-1, drops to Tier-2
This system will ensure "Competitive Cricket".

Sounds like the best set-up, although the ICC wouldn't want the possibility of one of 'The Big 3' somehow slipping into Tier 2 so maybe a 7/5 Tier would be more logical.
The question I have is would runs/wickets in Tier 2 count as Test Runs? Players could pad up their averages more running riot against Zimbabwe.

Dear lord, as if the numbers weren't already muddied up what with Test, first class, List A, etc. For the love of cricket, please nobody suggest *another* delimiter.

I am taking your question to another thread dedicated to this topic.
