India's Champions Trophy participation in jeopardy?

The Board of Control for Cricket in India's (BCCI) towering influence in world cricket came to a screeching halt as the majority voted for a change in the ICC's Governance and Revenue structures. BCCI lost the vote on governance and constitutional changes by a 2-12 margin while the revenue model, which was the bigger bone of contention, was passed 13 votes to one.

Out-voted in its opposition to dilute the Big Three structure, BCCI's revenue now has been nearly halved. The Indian board will now receive $293m across the eight-year cycle while the England and Wales Cricket Board and Zimbabwe Cricket will get $143m and $94m respectively, confirmed ICC in a media release on Thursday (April 27). The rest of the seven full members will be receiving $132m each while the Associate members will get a funding of $280m.

"This is another step forward for world cricket and I look forward to concluding the work at the Annual Conference," Manohar stated in the ICC release. "I am confident we can provide a strong foundation for the sport to grow and improve globally in the future through the adoption of the revised financial model and governance structure."

BCCI had been adamant on getting the lion's share out of ICC's revenue on grounds that it contributes the most to the coffers, and is bargaining for the same figure ($570 million) that it received under the Big Three revenue model, which now stands discarded.

Well I could see why the WICB officials do not want the current WI cricket structure to change, because it must feel great to manage and have power over 132m dollars from the ICC.

Agreed, WICB are happy with status quo.

As for the results of the meeting, well time will tell if this goes ahead smoothly.

Why BCCI supporters are acting like they're being treated like stepchildren, who knows - it's ludicrous. They're still getting more than any other board. Calling for pulling out of Champions Trophy or banning internationals from IPL is only going to lead to isolation.

BCCI got robbed. ICC intentionally rushed all the changes through at a time when the BCCI is being completely re-organized and being run by a caretaker ombudsman committee. When all of the BCCI's staff that had the subject matter expertise to deal with the ICC were forced out of office.

But if they got outvoted 12-2 and 13-1, even a BCCI that wasn't in flux couldn't do anything, could they?

Exactly those are blowout numbers

Except BCCI did not need to win the vote. As long as they had 3 other boards supporting them, the changes would have been delayed for further negotiations.

Bangladesh, Zimbabwe and West Indies switched sides in exchange of further payoffs from the ECB faction. Short term gain at the risk of long term hostility with BCCI. Let's see how this plays out.

Heh. This isn't NBA or NFL where there's a clear cut domestic league well above the competition.

Should India try to take that route, even though they have the lion's share of sponsorship money available, who's to say that Natwest or Big Bash doesn't step up to be *the thing*?

This is a win-of-sorts for the democratic process, even though it's the ICC. Growth of the game, vs concentration in a limited (albeit large) market.
