14 year old boy earns physics degree

ponderiver 2017-05-10 22:57:49

His 11 year old brother is not far behind him

"I knew I wanted to do physics when I was in high school, but then quantum physics was the one that stood out to me, because it was abstract. You can't actually see what's going on, so you have to sort of rely on the mathematics to work everything out."

Yeah, I heard that earlier.

That is brilliant for his age,I and many others in our Engineering classes found Calculus very difficult, although we were in our mid 20s and 30s.The fact is, the boy of 11 is really a "one off",you do get them from time to time.Physics and Maths is all about practice, intigration, differentiation, calculus, quadratics and maxima and minima,it's all practice.

You can't pigeonhole genius, bro.

Those 2 kids were probably home-schooled by their super-smart parents and that environment combined with genetics made it happen.

cool

a lot of the parents home schooling are not really smart people, they do employ a lot of tutors.

Nah mate,I wasn't trying to pigeonhole the boy,as you say he is a genius.I have some experience of what you can develop from a 10 year old. When my brother was a ten year old I showed him how to solve a Quadratic Equation, when I was finished he said he could do it,and he did. Some teachers at his school wanted to push him to write O Levels at 11,but my parents didn't want that, instead they wanted him to have a normal childhood.

cool

Solving by what method - quadratics can be solved many ways, by formula, by factoring, by completing the square, etc,…. did your brother master all the ways at 10?

they wanted him to have a normal childhood.
Kudos to them

Many child prodigies don't transition into adulthood very well. Nothing is wrong with 11 O levels, but to "skip childhood" for it is a tremendous loss. (and at worst culminating in a desk job doing computational tasks.... for life). If you have a rounded life AND the academic toolbox, then fine...

Kudos to your parents. get out and play football, climb a tree - fall out of it and learn the other-side of life... inter-personal relationships too....

Roundness followed by balance. Balance. Balance.

Solving by the Formula, cant remember it but you may correct me if i'm wrong;b+or- the square root 4 ac-2b divided 2a.Is years now ah done that shit.I always found it much easier by the formula.
