I experienced this too when my no.11 swung for the fences off the last ball and was stumped..he was also the opening bowler. The umpire was Sang Hue at the old Melbourne Park, Elletson Rd,now one of Kingston College campuses. We were nearly 100 away from a win a playing for a draw.
Did not speak to the guy for L O N G time.
Happens in village green cricket, cricket, curry goat cricket why not Test cricket...
lol lol lol lol

ProWI 2017-05-14 18:10:08

That was an unnecessary heave.

This Gabriel forgot the message from the Crickets Gods. This Gabriel should be the one banished.

Are you still alive? I was always afraid to ask that question. But now that you appear to be still breathing, I feel much better asking it.

Welcome back, unless I just happened to miss your irregular offerings.

Man it tough, I went through a situation like that in a wind ball game. I was upset for a long time so I could imagine how Chase is feeling especially if he gave advice to the contrary.

cg 2017-05-14 18:34:51

when Gabriel came out to bat there were 7 or 8 overs left that is 42 to 48 balls. I think Gabriel faced 22 of those. If you allow your no.11 batsman to face about half of the remaining balls you are looking for trouble. Great batting by Chase but bad management of the strike when batting with the tail. They will live and learn.

hubert 2017-05-14 18:36:56

In reply to methodic

Really tough. But I will cut Gabriel some slack..the many batsmen between 1 and 8 should have got it done and by jove..he did try. Then too it was a good send off for Misbah and Younus, two Legends. They deserved this victory and the history making feat.

Maispwi 2017-05-14 18:43:58

In reply to cg

Give de Pakistani fast bowlers some credit for keeping Chase form getting a single in the last 2 balls of the over. It wasn't all Chase's doing

cg 2017-05-14 18:47:56

In reply to Maispwi
Agreed. Chase batted extremely well ... to face 200 plus balls takes some doing. The next level for him as a Test player will be to learn how to turnover the strike even when the opposition is bowling well because if he continues to bat at 5 more often than not he will be batting with the tail so it is a skill he will have to learn.
Great point though!

ah mean now from where I am at, I could understand how Gabriel thought at the moment. It was premeditated. He thought if he defended he stood a better chance being caught. I could also understand how upset one or of his team mates might be. However, a little pain and disappointment motivates a young sportsman.

Logic 2017-05-14 18:51:50

You got to be fricking mad to blame Chase for this. He made the right calls including not taking the possible single on the 3rd ball and risking Gabriel facing Amir...a bowler with a much higher strike rate. Gabriel had one final last ultimate ball to face. To cast this of on someone else as if Gabriel is a child is to make excuses for reflects all that is wrong with our cricket and our culture....lack of accountability

bobby 2017-05-14 18:51:52

Only an idiot would be critical of Gabriel. The ones to be put to the sword are those who were picked to bat and did not. It should never have come down to 9, 10 & 11.

Chrissy 2017-05-14 19:00:39

He was MOM last test

Star 2017-05-14 19:06:53

Number 11 batsman , scored as much as number 2 Powell and twice as much as Singh and Dowrich.

Nothing to do about a number 11 batsman at all. It is all to do about understanding the game situation.

I am sorry but Gabriel is a brainless cricketer. Only a non thinking person would do what Gabriel did.

I am not a forecaster or a mind reader but I can assure you with one 100% accuracy that no other number 11 cricketer from any of the other test playing nations under the same game situation, would have done what Gabriel did.

Azari Joseph is another brainless cricketer. The over before he was out caught behind he also offered up a wild swipe which shows he was also unaware of the game situation.

I have no time for these brainless cricketers evil

Now I am feeling somewhat calmer..all I can say that..it was just nerves. I am confident that no one feels worse than Gabriel. Our goal is to keep improving as a team. If we do, moments like these will happen less frequently

And? You went call MoMs dunces before?

Not even my mother would allow Gabriel to bat almost 24 balls, especially if she was batting for almost a day and on 100 runs.Gabriel was surrounded by fielders, he thought the best option was to go over the top, Chase should have tried to get most of the strike.I bet if it was Shiv in Chase position, we would all be blaming him.

FuzzyWuzzy 2017-05-14 19:17:23

In reply to bobby

So because the top order failed it gives Gabriel license ?

Then he should've swiped from ball one...not play carefully and then swipe out the last ball he was required to defend

more responsibility yes, but you cannot fault the young man. he did his best until that shot; dem men who get pick fo bat have to bat.

Maispwi 2017-05-14 21:03:17

Dere have a bunch a people here who have never been in dat kinda pressure situation torking all kinda tripe. Fellow tailenders know how hard dere heart does be beating when saving or winning a match depends on dere batting ability of lack thereof.

We all upset about de shot de Angel played but cut him some slack. He is de one dat have to live wid it every day from now on.

Star 2017-05-14 23:03:32

Cannot justify the excuses this time. This one boggles the mind.

All test batsmen should be aware of the match situation even if he is a number eleven.

Both Gabriel and Joseph are brainless cricketers. Sorry.

Maispwi 2017-05-14 23:27:51

Dats reality not an excuse. As de on field talk goes, pressure buss pipe.

Nobody is saying dat it wasn brainless but dats what pressure does
