They were not handed out willy nilly.

The Sheiks only contrubution is "blather, blather, Australia, Australia, OH RASS FUNNY AS ".

What exactly did he do to earn an avatar????

Drop "connected to".

I gave what admin described at the time as a very generous contribution – I never got an avatar – so I guess financial generosity may be a factor – but not a determinative factor

Avatars are given to the chosen. I am proud of mine, it is a greyish square box that admin gave me, and he told me "it is there, you just can't see it": see it here
